Kaveri Engine Project update

Hey guys! The article says it's indigenously built, so why is it being tested in Russia?

Is it not being built and tested with Russian assistance then?

You kidding, we do not have jet engine altitude test facility, So we are looking forward to Russia for high altitude testing of engine.....

no india did't have the facility for high attitude test . so it is tested in russia for rs. 80 million

India's to flight-test first indigenous jet engine next month

Bangalore: After two decades of research and development, India is all set to flight-test its first indigenously developed jet engine next month, an official said today.

"Kaveri engine will be flight-tested in one-and-half months... Should be after middle of May," director of Bangalore-based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a DRDO lab, T Mohana Rao, told PTI here.

It would be flight-tested using the IL-76 aircraft in Russia, he said.

The Kaveri engine, meant for India's fighter jet, the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, has completed all simulation and altitude tests. The altitude tests in Russia in February were a "grand success", he said.

GTRE officials said around Rs3,000 crore has been spent on the Kaveri project.

Rao said GTRE is now looking to reduce the weight of the Kaveri engine to 50 kg from 60 kg. "It has to be fine-tuned. We will go in for lot of optimisation in future".

GTRE, which is engaged in research and development of gas turbines for military aircraft, has so far developed nine Kaveri engines and four Kabini (core of Kaveri). "All engines have been tested to full potential," he added.

Congrats India.

look guys... credit where credit is due. India is doing realy well, and this shouldnt be seen as a bad thing for Pakistan, and neither should Pakistani success be a bad thing for India.

but I take issue with ure reference to the wars. India is 10 TIMES bigger than Pakistan, by any rational explanation india should have overran pakistan decades ago, but is unable to :hitwall:. That is a major credit to Pakistan. u Have to admit.:pakistan:

Appreciate you giving credit where its due. also India never wanted to overrun Pakistan. Also entirely over running a country is not what you call winning a war.

.
On another thread, Pakistanis are busy paying respect to dead terrorists behind 26/11.

Not to support terrorist acts but terrorist and terrorism has lately been used for political and even strategic gain. Just like British considered George Washington as a terrorist.

But more importantly indian involvement in Mumbai attack could not be ruled out.

.
But back on topic....

what is the roadmap for indian engine use?? Is it going to power any existing aircraft or for future project? What I read is this engine is enough for LCA.

Well, No this is not enough for the LCA, it does not give adequate thrust which is necessary , So now there has been a lot of modifications done, even in its weight... Lets see how this test turns out to be, if it qualifies, it would power LCA , both MK1 and MK2... And Evolution is all what is intended through R&D, GTRE would not stop at kaveri, would produce even more powerful Engines for future aircrafts.... but it all depends on how this turns out to be:cheers:

So, at the of the day India still requires Russian stamp of approval.

How exactly is it 'indigenous' built' when the Russians are involved in the project and helping it go through several stages?

Wouldn't it be unfair to call it indigenous?

I suspect this is not a genuine query.

taking it to test somewhere else, and that does not make it indigenous? Could u be more open as to how u came to that conclusion?? and why get in a hurry and spend millions of $ in high altitude testing facility, when our dearest Ally Russia can offer us that facility, and testing it in another country does not make it non-indigenous....

DRDO launches Rs 100 cr project to fund R&D in jet engines-Infrastructure-Economy-News-The Economic Times

BANGALORE: The Defence Research and Development Organisation has launched a Rs 100 crore initiative to fund R&D projects in the area of gas
turbines, a senior DRDO official said here on Wednesday.

Under this initiative of DRDO's Aeronautics Research and Development Board, R&D projects which need investment of Rs 50 lakh to Rs 5 crore would be considered for funding, Director of Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), T Mohana Rao, told reporters here.

Bangalore-headquartered GTRE, a DRDO lab, is the nodal agency to spearhead this venture, named GATET and Rao would be the administrative head. "Rs 78 crore has already been sanctioned. We have already shortlisted some projects. We hope to fund 40 to 45 projects", he said.

The initiative is expected to fuel "coherent directed research" in the area of gas turbines, DRDO officials said.

Under the venture, a top-down approach, DRDO, taking into account futuristic national programmes, would support, encourage, nurture, monitor and exploit the design, research, development and manufacturing capability of academic institutions and R&D establishments, industries and other think tanks to carry out frontline work in bringing out next generation gas turbine engine system.

The programme envisages participation of 100 R&D centres and 1,000 scientists, engineers and technicians.

I have a question regarding the current Kaveri engine.

There was a reported problem with regard to the turbine compressor blades. IAF wanted Single Crystal Turbine blades but GTRE wasn't able to deliver that and Kaveri ended up having directionally solidified type blades. This was identified as a shortcoming along with the weight issues and lack of required thrust.

Does anybody know whether the new engines that they are testing has the issues regarding compressor blades resolved?
