Not to start a language war in Kaveri ( )thread ; but since Tamil and Kannada came from the same proto-Tamil Kannada dialect there ought to be commonality and this is one.
Regarding that South Indian languages descended from Sanskrit - No , they did not come from Sanskrit rather many words were borrowed and even that varies among the four South Indian language.
For example it is the most in Malayalam while the least in Tamil.
