MUZAFFARABAD, Sept 2: Three Pakistan Army soldiers were killed in Indian shelling from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Doodhial sector of Neelum valley at night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

The unprovoked shelling by the Indian forces created panic among the people of the area.

Later, the residents of the area held a `peace march` at Athmuqam and the participants called upon India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and maintain truce across the LoC.

They also urged the authorities to `rein in the banned militant groups` which they alleged were out to spoil peace in their area.

According to Pakistan Army spokesman Maj-Gen Athar Abbas, Pakistani soldiers from the Mujahid Battalion were going from one post to another when they lost their way due to bad weather and came under fire which was started by the Indian troops without any provocation.

“Three soldiers were martyred,” he said, adding: “Their bodies were recovered after 24 hours.”

Pakistani troops returned fire and the matter had also been raised with the local Indian Army commanders, he said.

Official and civilian sources recognised the martyred soldiers as Subedar Aftab, Lance Naik Chaudhry Iqbal and Sepoy Imran.

The incident is one of the severest violations of the ceasefire which the Indian and Pakistani troops struck on November 26, 2003.

In May, this year, Indian Army said that one of its soldiers was killed by a Pakistani sniper, triggering a gunfight that shattered more than a year of calm.

However, the ceasefire has been respected by both the sides, except for some sporadic incidents of cross border shelling which also caused a few civilian casualties.

Until it came into effect in November 2003, skirmishes and artillery duels were a daily occurrence along the LoC, and in most cases, the civilians were the victims of these incidents.

Life in Neelum valley, which straddles the LoC, was particularly worst affected by it as the Indians would bombard the area`s main artery without any recession, bringing vehicular as well as pedestrian movement to a grinding halt.

Fearful of the troubling situation, the Neelum valley residents passed a `peace resolution` during the Eid congregations at Athmuqam, calling upon Islamabad and New Delhi to maintain peace along the LoC.

“Some people seem to be averse to the peace along the Line of Control. But the residents of the Neelum valley will not tolerate any attempt to spoil peace,” the resolution said.

Meanwhile, speaking to the participants of the peace rally, President Neelum Bar Association Mir Gohar Rehman advocate, traders` leader Sardar Khurshid Ahmed, PPAJK leader Nazir Danish and several others recalled that Neelum valley residents had given unprecedented sacrifices for Kashmir freedom movement as India had turned their area into a virtual prison but some elements wanted to push them back into that situation which they would not allow.

“We are peace-loving people and can defend our area with our army but we will not allow anyone to use our land for terrorism or to spoil our peace,” they said. They called upon the authorities to evict all those elements from their area which were jeopardising peace.

The highlighted portions of this article are actually very interesting. the first is that the locals are blaming the flare up on the militants primarily which seems to support what the Indian army has been saying.

Secondly, the Maj Gen of the Pakistani army quoted seems to be suggesting that those killed were somehow in a wrong place (lost?) when the Indian army opened fire. What the exact story is will remain to be seen but this admission makes it clear that it is not a simple case of unprovoked firing.

I think the Maj Gen is a big fan of the series LOST

If pakistan want to maintain peace then she should ask her soldiers to not get lost in the Indian side. its very simple.

This sector is and was always saturated with terrorists from the early 90s waiting to infiltrate the border into India. And not one has been apprehended by the PA so far. So much for the WOT!! :cheesy:

They also urged the authorities to `rein in the banned militant groups` which they alleged were out to spoil peace in their area.
Rein in the militant groups? Which world are they living in? Who's gonna rein them in?

Lost their way and entered Indian territory! Now how the heck would the Indian troops know that these were PA troops considering that the terrorists infiltrate wearing uniforms supplied by the PA?

“Three soldiers were martyred,” he said, adding: “Their bodies were recovered after 24 hours.”
RIP

They always provide covering fire for the terrorists whilst they are infiltrating!

They should call upon the PA/ISI to stop sending in militants. Only then can there be peace!

“We are peace-loving people and can defend our area with our army but we will not allow anyone to use our land for terrorism or to spoil our peace,” they said. They called upon the authorities to evict all those elements from their area which were jeopardising peace.
Easier said than done! Evict the LeT, JeM etc from the area? Not a chance in hell!
