:. Kashmir watches as Obama enters White House

Shabir Ibn Yusuf

SRINAGAR, Jan 21: As the world watched Barack Obama take oath as the 44th president of the United States, people of the trouble torn valley watched his oath taking ceremony with hope that he will intervene in solving the long pending dispute.

The statements of Obama indicate that he is all set to adopt a different approach in Iraq and Afghanistan. If he includes Kashmir on his agenda and wants to intervene to resolve the dispute between India and Pakistan, the Indian government will find itself in a tight spot.

The people in every nook and corner of the valley late in the evening were glued to their TV sets and some were listening to the radio during the oath taking ceremony.

"Soon after Obama was elected, his statements have brought hope for the people of Kashmir," said Nazir Ahmad a student of Kashmir University studying political science who watched the oath taking ceremony in the recreation hall of university along more than hundred other students. He said as the ceremony was going on, the students were clapping.

His hostel mate Zeeshan has a different tale to tell and reason to clap, "Bombardment in Gaza recently, offensive on Iraq and Afghanistan were engineered by Bush," he said adding, "He never said a word over the bloodshed in Kashmir." Zeeshan says the reason for cheering Obama was due to his expressed interest in resolving the Kashmir issue. "The people of Kashmir do not want more bloodshed and want a peaceful solution of the problem," he said.

Izhar who is pursuing his doctorate in political science, commenting on the oath taking ceremony, said that India welcomes Obama's promise to deal with terror with an iron hand. "India fears that Obama may want to meddle in Kashmir issue. India has denounced terrorism and vowed to fight against the menace of terror with all its strength. But there is no doubt that the birth of cross-border terrorism was somehow attributed to the Kashmir issue," he said. Izhar said that after Obama's statement makes the case of Kashmir a strong one.

"The recent statement made by British Foreign Secretary David Miliband that Kashmir problem was responsible for the rise of terrorism in India, further gave India anxious moments and gave extra ammo to Pakistan. If that was not enough, banned militant outfit Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) has announced that it would give up violence if Kashmir issue is resolved," he said, adding that world particularly America and Britain want that LeT must give up the weapon. "If LeT gives up the weapon that is in interest of the world and that will generate interest in Kashmir issue by the world body."

All areas of Kashmir needs to be solved, the area under India's control and the area under Pakistan's control....and the wishes of the inhabitants of the land must be respected through a plebiscite.
