JAMMU: Over 35,000 troops have been reduced in Jammu and Kashmir in the past 15 months, chief minister Omar Abdullah told the state legislative assembly.
"Without creating any hype we have reduced 35,000 troops and also decreased the number of central paramilitary forces from internal duty," Abdullah said Wednesday evening.
The main opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP) and separatists in the state have been consistently campaigning for troop reduction as they believe that the presence of the army in Kashmir was intruding into the day-to-day lives of the people and was also responsible for human rights abuses.
Abdullah's National Conference is also of the view that an improvement in the security situation necessitates reduction of troops in the Valley.
However, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is opposed to the move. BJP legislature party leader Chaman Lal Gupta told the assembly that the reduction of troops would only encourage the militants. "It will encourage militants to regroup and worsen the situation," he said.
Abdullah, on his part, promised that there would be a further decline in the number of troops.
"With the gradual restoration of peace and tranquility, the footprints of the security forces in the state would lessen," he said.
The chief minister claimed that "the track record of his government's last one year is testimony to his commitment to zero tolerance to human rights abuses".
He cited the instance of Border Security Force (BSF) commander R.K. Birdi and constable Lakhvinder Kumar being arrested for their alleged involvement in the killing of a teenager in Srinagar last month.

Actually, 2 Su-30MKI's that supposedly deviated from their path. If you had the balls that you claim to have then you would have shot them down. After all, it's your airspace and IAF aircrafts violated it. You had every right to do it. Deep inside your pilots knew that they are no match and they secretly prayed that the Su's return to Indian Airspace.

If they were mig 21s instead of Su30's I'm sure your command would have shown more courage.

Mumbai attack was a bait for war. Your own media revealed that had a war taken place Pakistan did not even have enough fuel to transport it's troops from the western border to the eastern ..let alone sustain a war.

If you really want to go to war, then attack us with your Army, Air Force, or Navy ..not brainwashed terrorists who kill innocent civilians.

India has more Muslims than Pakistan. The content of your contribution shows just how brainwashed you are. Why do you talk of AFTER 1947 ?
The freedom struggle was BEFORE 1947. Tell me what contribution Pakistani's made to it ? (Pakistani's = People originating from then northwest India)

Every province of Pakistan has its own culture, language, traditional clothing, history, music, food, etc... Just like Indian Punjabis have nothing in common with Indian Tamils except for Religion.

India = 80% hindu

Pakistan = 97% Muslim and Kashmir is the only Muslim majority state India controls all the way up noth far away from center of india, on Pakistan.

By the way, Kashmiris feel more at home being part of Pakistan than india. When was the last time you heard a protest in Azad Kashmir against Pakistan. Also we had a Kashmiri leading his country, Pakistan, 3 times:
