Kashmir is no doubt amongst the most extraordinary scenic marvels on earth due to its impressive array of the highest mountain peaks from the Karakorum ranges to the majestic vistas of the Himalayas. Known for its lush green valleys and beautiful collection of floras, the state hosts many rivers including the mighty ancient Indus river, that is the livelihood of millions since many millennia, as the former Mughal emperor put it best: “If there is Paradise on earth, it is this, it is this..." But as luck may have it till this day the people of this heavenly state would not be able to fully reimburse themselves from the natural beauty offered by their own native land due to the bitter unfinished chapter of partition left by the British empire. The state of Jammu and Kashmir has only seen bloodshed for over the past seven decades, as both nations India and Pakistan have been on the brink of war ever since Independence and have already fought three wars over the state. Now with Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) into the fray one would think the International community would take the current troubling situation more seriously and become proactive to help conclude the seven decade long conflict, and fulfil the longstanding plebiscite to allow the Kashmiri people their rightful liberty to become the masters of their own destiny. It would be foolish to think during the heightened tensions in the recent year due to the unwarranted Indian aggression on the 26th February of last year and post revoking of article 370 and 35A fiasco that the genie will continue to stay complacent in incubation past 22 years as redlines have now been crossed, and with the regional tensions now reaching its climax it’s not becoming a matter of ‘if’ anymore but we should now be pondering on the possibility of ‘when’ it will escape, and for those international stakeholders who are just content on being mere spectators during this nuclear charged Russian roulette are obliviously ignoring the potential global catastrophe that can arise, and also to the fact that this is a losing ‘game’ for everyone with or without a shot being fired, as India moves deeper into the corridors of fascism it will have consequences far beyond its boundaries.

Picture of Modi and Hitler comparison [ii]
To fully grasp the understanding of the current unnatural metamorphosis being forced onto the people of Indian occupied Kashmir (IOK) one must first dwell into the roots of the fascist party (BJP). In order to properly examine the latter, we must first look back at the distant past, unbeknownst to many, the Hindu militant movement got much of its inspiration from European fascism during the 1930’s it was at this period when the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was born; where much of the RSS leaders expressed much admiration for autocrats like Hitler and Mussolini and repeatedly called for a fascist based society where, ‘different’ people would become ‘enemies.’ [1]. And what’s worrying is much of BJP prominent leaders, which includes the party’s President, vice president and the Prime minister Modi himself were members of this fundamentalist organisation, and thus should not come as a surprise that unprecedented number of RSS members have now managed to snatch up many posts within the government. [2]. Over the years the prejudice in India against minorities has been snowballing as we saw in the 2002 massacre in Gujarat for example, where 1000’s of Muslims were butchered, burned and raped by Hindu radicals. Modi who was the Chief Minister at the time was bestowed the title: ‘Butcher of Gujarat’ and consequently barred from entering many EU countries, as well as the United States on the grounds of religious intolerance. [3]. Under Modi India continues fall deeper into the pits of fascism, reaching a point of no return as popular vote is now dictated by ‘punishing’ nuclear armed Pakistan, and segregating minority groups from society. Just recently the government has called for segregating Muslims from Hindu’s in a hospital, leading many to outcry apartheid [4], perhaps such incidents are now expected to become the new norm as India finally declutters itself from the veils of ‘secularism.’ The few voices of reason who oppose the injustice are either shunned or jailed, such was the case with a professor who was waiting to be incarcerated because he was critical to Modi’s authoritarian rule. [5]. As India’s intolerance to minorities reaches new heights places that were once considered a safe sanctuary are no longer safe as toxic politics has tainted even educational institutions, where teachers are not even spared from the wrath of radical Hindu students [6]. Similarly, with the recent Delhi riots an echo from Gujarat massacre nearly two decades ago saw another campaign against countless Muslims, being burned alive and their homes and livelihood razed to the ground [7], as the state laid complacent, where even the police who naturally are expected to protect victims were accomplices to the transgression, it therefore should not be questionable on which path India has chosen [8], plus with a huge mandate at its helm, and with inadequate checks of power, the ruling party and its supporters have taken it upon themselves to become the judge, jury and executioner.

Attacks on protestors [iii]

Now this brings us back to Kashmir, which has been in total lockdown for over 8 months, since Article 370 and 35A was revoked, which is not only illegal under the constitution of India, but more importantly against the United Nations resolutions. This barbaric actions by Modi also meant all forms of communications were cut off from the outside world; those who came out in defiance were shot dead [9], with an abnormally high one million soldiers needed to ‘patrol’ the valley no doubt a sinister truth behind the artificial fog lays mountain of dead corpses, which will be brushed under the rug. This has been the case where previously thousands of unmarked mass graves been found prior, where the government forces has been suspect of staging gun battles by Human right groups such as the (APDP) to wash their hands from the thousands of missing persons from the valley, there has also been resolution adopted in the European Parliament since 2008, that called on the government to ensure impartial investigation on all mass graves [10]. As a Fellow Kashmiri myself I would not entrust the Government of India conduct impartial investigations, as it would not have been any different telling Adolph Hitler himself to investigate his own heinous crimes during the Jewish holocaust. The RSS fanatics are cut from the same cloths as the Nazis and should not been seen any differently. The goal of the Modi regime is to criminally alter the demographic balance of Kashmir without the consent of the natives, this is why Article 370 was revoked, and with the addition of new domicile laws announced this will allow outsiders to become permanent residents [11], and with Kashmir still in blackout I fear the dark days of 1947 repeats itself where nearly a quarter of million Kashmiri Muslims were either slaughtered or driven out of their homes subsequently becoming a minority in the Jammu district [12], where once upon a time forming a majority of the populace and today only a few remnants remain. Furthermore, in hindsight on the onslaught in Indian occupied Kashmir, it would be foolish to think the regime will stop at the valley, as with the controversial Citizenship Act the entire Indian mainland is on sights, which critics argue it purposefully marginalises Muslims [13], and those who are unable to obtain the supposed paperwork are to be stripped of their citizenship and be sent to large purpose built detention camps [14]. As Modi’s Hindutva Kingdom dreams is coming to fruition, this has led to an increase of unease amongst other minority groups such as Christians, Sikhs and Buddhists alike who have also felt their share of increased prosecution in recent years. [15].

To conclude there will never be a bright future for Kashmiris under the so-called ‘Indian Union’ just like the indiscriminate pellet firings that has taken the light away of children as young as 18 months [16] and destroying livelihoods of thousands of additional pellet victims, who are left handicapped whereas millions of others are left in despair whilst imprisoned in their homes, who are at the mercy of the same monsters that have been slaughtering them for over seven decades. Now that the genocide is accelerating in a higher gear, the world leaders can no longer turn a blind eye to the elephant in the room, as the butcher sharpens his blades it’s not only Kashmiris, but over 200 million other minorities in the mainland that are also in sight of being slaughtered, to stay ignorant in these desperate times will only pave a way for the biggest genocide of the 21st century.

Feel free to critique, originally I was going to do a satire piece that I started a few months back, but due to the current climate I lost interest. I started this article last week, but did most of it late at night in the last couple of days, I feel there is still room for improvement and may revisit it in the near future.

Excellent post :-)

Marvellous!!!

The moment kashmiris held guns in their hands, killed and threw lakhs of hindu pandits out of their homes,it lost the sympathy of the world..besides,pakistan itself has a bad reputation around the world...when pakistan complains ,it is easy for india to convince the world that what is going on in kashmir is terrorism and not freedom fight backed by pak.

Pakistan was never on the wrong side of history.
The reason why Pakistan had to interfere was the bold part. Hindu hari singh was ethnically cleansing jammu under the full guidance of patel, nehru, baldev singh and menon taking advantage of the poonch rebellion that had nothing to do with Pakistan.
Khanzeer Sheikh abdullah was released from jail by the orders of nehru and hindu hari singh dismissed his hindu PM who was actually thinking of acceding to Pakistan because of ground realities.

In the middle of september, Pakistan assessed that Hindu hari singh will accede to india. In the same time india blockaded Junagarh who had already acceded to pak and set up a temporary govt in the border districts.

The mistake that Pakistan made imo, is that they should have made clear in the partition council meetings after junagadh blockade that hindu dominated areas can go to india but muslim dominated have to go to Pak at all costs.

Anyways, tribes and azad forces then went in and hindu hari singh called upon hindu army. Quaid invited hindu nehru, only mountbatten came, here again they asked for plebiscite Quaid rejected because Khanzeer Sheikh abdullah was rallying people in favor of india in the valley and assured nehru of victory.

here again, it is said by Ch Muhammad ali, that mountbatten offered to exchange hyderabad and junagarh with Kashmir, Liaquat refused.

Anyways, it was the gilgit scouts and their commander major william, azad forces, our dear pashtun tribes and of course the Pak army that gave us our vital link to central asia.

IMO, Pakistan should have asked for district wise referendum, may be history would be different.

Point is - never let anyone tell you that Pakistan invaded kashmir - wrong!
india blockaded junagadh (legally part of Pak) and nehru openly rejected its accession.

A hindu army 300 miles away lands in srinagar to defend kashmir from kashmir's own locals who were revolting against its undemocratic ruler - pathetic hindutva argument.

Curfew is not the way to defeat terrorism. So it is pretty clear to world that Kashmiris are not interested in India, they are basically being occupied and have their rights curbed and dictated under the name of democracy.

If Pakistan was doing terrorism then India wouldn't need to lock down the whole Kashmir. But Kashmiris feel disgust from you Hindus and even after close to a century, they won't accept India and either want to be with "Pakistan" or be free.

That piss drinking Modi locked Kashmir down because there was going to be a lot of Hindus sent straight to hell in protest of the annexation of Kashmir. Even after half a year, no matter how much piss Modi drinks, he can't gather the courage to remove lockdown in Kashmir for fear of repercussions.

Skipped over the Jammu genocide quite conveniently.

@Dual Wielder

Great op piece. Captures the essence of the struggle and touches on its roots.

I for one would like to see a more dynamic information based assault by Pakistanis aimed squarely at the monopoly of history currently held by Delhi.

The Jammu genocide has been swept under the carpet very conveniently by hindutva forces and yet, we live in the age of the internet, where information previously discarded can very easily be revived and revisited by concerned parties. As Pakistanis and Kashmiris, it is our responsibility to not simply ignore such matters or merely accept falsified history without rebuttal in some form.

Jammu's Muslims were wiped out or expelled. Why have we not explored their accounts and recorded this chapter of history accurately?

Ask Pakistanis outside of pdf and they may not even know Muslims lived in Jammu. I suspect Kashmiris will have some knowledge but still, it counts for nothing if its ramifications are ignored.

Imran Khan has triggered a debate that was hitherto non-existent, however, all the days of defiance and protests and UNGA speeches will count for nothing if firm facts of India's actions and history are not accurately documented and publicised. I sincerely hope the mantle can be picked up by all of us and a great place to begin would be where it began chronologically, with Hari Singh's original sin in Jammu.

How about we work on the model to boost tourism in both sides?

How about you stop with this kashmiri genocide and go fk your rss nazi self

When was the last time Pakistan cared about what the world thinks or not? If we can get a part of it while being broke we sure can liberate the other chunk as well.

Best of luck

lost the sympathy of the world
World is not a piece of land called India.

How about we work on the model to boost tourism in both sides?
We can.. I am all in the favor of giving independence to Kashmiris of both sides if they want. Kashmir belongs to Kashmiris, and only they should decide who they want to live with (if at all). Once Kashmir region gets independence, Kashmiris can be taken into confidence by both sides to allow visa free access. Both sides should be allowed to invest in the tourism sector. This way, Indians will be able to see the beauty of Kashmir of our side and we can visit our brother on the other side. The result will be:

1 - Less spending on defense by both countries and effectively working on poverty elevation
2 - Eradication of militancy on both sides
3 - Uplifting of the economic condition of Kashmiris

oth sides should be allowed to invest in the tourism sector. This way, Indians will be able to see the beauty of Kashmir of our side and we can visit our brother on the other side.

I have to disagree with you. Only and only when kashmir is free, either independent or with federation with Pakistan, then indians can come "visit" it. And that's pretty much it. They killed, raped, burned thousands in the Kashmir valley. You can't reason with terrorists.

I sincerely hope the mantle can be picked up by all of us and a great place to begin would be where it began chronologically, with Hari Singh's original sin in Jammu.

Agreed, Kashmir genocide should be properly documented from the early days. I myself was unaware of the mass genocide in Jammu until recently, Unfortunately for us the Indians were just better at marketing, until IK came along.. but alas it was too late. There was also the initiative taken by @Indus Pakistan to document Indian use of terrorism as state policy, though regretably the thread hasn't been active in a while.

The sad fact about Kashmir is that I think we are going see more of the same both India and Pakistan are going be locked in constant proxy conflicts between each other more Kashmiris will die and India being larger market and a piece of real estate for the west/US against the PRC will basically wont do anything the root of the problem is that greed blinds the world from doing anything I dont have hope from even any Muslim country as well I am fed up about diplomatic statements and arms sales what are we doing nothing, only way for Pakistan is to increase proxy warfare India is doing it already and we are doing it too
