Top Kashmiri minister Omar Abdullah resigns over underage sex racket claims:tdown:

The leading elected politician in Indian Kashmir resigned today over allegations that he was involved in a sex trafficking and underage prostitution racket.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the top official in the disputed territory, was accused of featuring on a list of influential men who allegedly benefitted from a sex ring used by the Indian political elite.

Mr Abdullah denied claims by the opposition dating back to a 2006 sex scandal, but told the state legislature, “I want to resign till I am cleared of this false allegation. I cannot work till I am proved innocent. It is a baseless allegation but I won’t be at peace with myself until I am proven innocent.”

Colleagues in the ruling National Conference party begged him to reverse his decision.

Devinder Rana, an aide to the minister, said he submitted his resignation to N.N. Vohra, the state governor. The governor’s office issued a statement later saying that Mr Abdullah was asked to stay on as chief minister while an investigation was held. It was not clear this afternoon whether the resignation would be accepted.

The scandal first surfaced in 2006 after gossip and pornographic videos began to circulate on mobile phones messages. Police investigated the content and discovered that women and underage girls were being trafficked and supplied to politicians, bureaucrats and security officials.

The revelations sparked weeks of violent protests across the Himalayan region and, three years later, the case is still being investigated by India’s Central Bureau of Investigation.

Kashmir’s opposition People’s Democratic Party leader Muzaffar Baig alleged today that Mr Abdullah’s name appeared in a document presented in 2006 by CBI to the court that has been trying the case.

The opposition claimed they had accessed the list, but did not describe how they had obtained it. Mr Baig said: “He has lost the moral authority to rule the state, he must resign.”

India’s state-owned television station Doordarshan reported that Mr Abdullah had never figured in the CBI’s investigations, while the Press Trust of India news agency quoted an unnamed CBI official saying that his name had not surfaced among the accused.

Mr Abdullah, 39, came to power in state elections last year following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather.

Kashmir, which is claimed by both India and Pakistan, is in the grip of an insurgency that has killed more than 47,000 people over the past two decades, according to official figures.

Zakir, I agree with you. Hes a well spoken Muslim Kashmiri, that India used to put a friendly face to their forceful occupation of Kashmir. I hope the Abdullah's dynastic rule has finally come to an end now.

This is so true to the legacy of all Indian installed puppets in Kashmir.

What happened to innocent untill proven guilty?

Oppostion made allegations and he had breakdown emotionaly. There is no proof of such incident aganist him yet. Let wait and see.

Politicians are not that choocha to break down emotionally, an innocent man won't be quiting his position. He did this so the opposition would cease to pursue the charges against him.

^^^ You can draw any conclusions but fact is that nothing have been proven yet.

Dont jump into speculations and conclusions asimji....its too early to judge wether he is innocent or not. As u may know the presumption of innocence- "all suspects are innocent until proven guilty". So far there is no proof only claim.

His name was on the report prepared by CBI and police. They tried to cover up his name but opposition brought the matter before assembly and he resigned to save himself.

I think you are confused Asim. Since the topic has been diverted once again to the pet Pakistani peeve, let me also say that it is Pakistan who forcefully occupied part of Indian soil in 1948. I also would like to say that Pakistanis commenting on the morality or otherwise of Indian leaders is really precious :coffee:

Cheers, Doc

He resigned because he had something called GHAIRAT. More PDP politicians were involved in this racket and chargesheeted than NC ones. Seriously, this will do more harm to PDP for going into gutter politics like this.

Obviously Muzafar Beig, the guy who levelled the accusations, has now backtracked after realising his folly.
Muzaffar Beig made a complete U-turn at this point saying that he had a soft corner for Farooq Abdullah as a person which had a reflection in what he felt for Omar Abdullah - another soft corner. " We should leave this behind us for peace and prosperity of Jammu and Kashmir. As Opposition we will support the government on all issues," he said.

Beig then blamed everything on the "honourable" Speaker in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, saying his behaviour left something to be desired.

FTN: Quitter yet winner: Omar, J-K's best bet

Abdulla is still CM, he had resigned conditionally saying that IF indeed he is on the CBI probe list, then he will not be CM until all investigations are complete. Since he is not even on the list, the J&K Governer did not accept his resignation.

Why is it Asim that when a Kashmiri Muslim considers himself to be a proud Indian he becomes a scumbag/sellout etc etc., but when a Kashmiri Muslim resorts to terrorism he becomes a heroic freedom fighter?

Could it be because you are seeing things a bit differently than 1 billion Indians (including Kashmiris)?

And finally speaking of human trafficking, what are countless young Pakistani boys doing in the Middle East ..... cultural exchange students?

Cheers, Doc

HAHA, nice BS!

You are comparing freedom fighters (NOT terrorists) to a suspected human-trafficker! WOW! Are you ignorant or what!? :hitwall: (I do believe that the man is INNOCENT until proven guilty, but ur comparison is completely foolish to say the least)

Remember, Kashmir is our land, and we will fight for what is ours!

And as far as countless young Pakistani boys in the mid-east? what the heck is wrong with you!? Why are you pulling blanket statements from ur behind? When spreading propaganda, make it atleast sound somewhat legitimate! :cheesy:
