NEW DELHI: The river cruise from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to Dibrugarh in Assam via Bangladesh, billed as the world’s longest, will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 13.

The luxury cruise with foreign tourists will cover around 4,000 km of 27 river systems including Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly, Brahmaputra and West Coast Canal in India in a span of 50 days.
“This will be a unique cruise in the world and a reflection of growing cruise tourism in India. I request people of West Bengal to take the benefit of this,” Modi said while launching multiple projects for West Bengal through video-conferencing on Friday. He also announced that the cruise will start its first voyage on January 13.

The cruise will cover 50 major tourist sites, including some heritage sites, the famous Ganga Aarti at Varanasi and sanctuaries such as Kaziranga National Park and the Sundarbans Delta. The cruise will travel around 1,100 km in Bangladesh.

A senior official of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the agency responsible for National Waterways (NWs), said the cruise operated by a private player will be a regular feature.

“Because of the increased focus of the government on development and maintenance of inland waterways, we have taken up several projects to increase the depth, set up necessary navigation facilities and jetties for successful operation of both passenger and cargo vessels,” the official said.
Officials said that the development of India-Bangladesh Protocol route has played a key role in planning of the cruise service.

“Our civilisation has come up along the rivers and hence the tourists using river cruises will get a better experience and understand our culture and heritage,” an IWAI official said.

Recently, shipping and waterways minister Sarbananda Sonowal had said that the development of coastal and river shipping, including cruise services, is one of the top priorities of the government.
The Prime Minister said that the Centre has taken up the task of developing 100 national waterways and the target is to see world class cruise operating on these waterways besides movement of cargo. “In ancient times, waterways were used in a big way for trade and tourism. That’s why several towns came up on the banks of rivers and there was industrial development,” he said.

Wow!

Brilliant!

Do the BNP still believe there will be a “fair election” 🤣🤣🤣

Whilst the American ambassador visits political rallies of BNP/Jamat - China and India build ground realities 😂😂😂

Btw, I will be one of the first customers 🤩🤩🤩

What will be the ticket price for a room?

I guess, it will be priced like the Caribbean cruises?

From £500 a night - would be excellent value.

. .
Then it will be priced similarly to Palace on Wheels.

The cuisine would be awesome!

For a Sylheti Bangladeshi like me - I would start the cruise at Varanasi and get off at Assam. Take a ride to my home town Sylhet to visit family and friends.

It’s just perfect!

As I said, white people will never help us develop or build friendships.

We have to do it ourselves.

Or we will stay poor and resentful forever!

Let’s change our destiny.

Probably there will be some Caribbean type cruise ship tour in India too, from Kolkata to Andaman/Nicobar to Lakshadweep and offboard in Mumbai.

. .
So, Indian tourists will be able to see firsthand the better and more civilized living conditions in Bangladesh compared to India. It will shatter a lot of prejudice and superstition about Bangladesh in their mind.
Blimey ! They should see what an asian tiger Bangladesh has become, last time I checked everyone was driving ferraris in dhaka!

. . . . .
50 days is too long. I am assuming that most people will not be taking the full trip but parts of it?
As per news reports the full trip will cost Rs 20 lakhs per person. So for a couple this is the price of a house in a small town in India. Even for rich foreigners who use the luxury trains, this is too steep and there must be a way to book a shorter trip.

Also, is the route navigable throughout the year?
