Karzai to visit India; Afghans look for enhanced defence ties

India should transfer some Bofors to Afghanistan, will help them if border issue escalates with Pakistan.

.
is he going to finalise that before leaving office? he cant run for third time

He might have finalized it by now as he is leaving for India next week; our military and civilian engagement with India will last forever if it's Karzai or anyone else in the office.

Though I don't think this time he will ask 100% for aid but may talk on purchasing hardware and paying for it later...

Afghan brothers are always welcome.

India should do everything it can to help ANSF. A stronger Afghanistan is in India's interest.

Can't agree More!

We should support ANA by logistics and heavy armour no matter how much it cost us, because its a now or never situation for afghanistan, if it will fall in the hands of taliban now, than their are slim chances of returning back for distant future.

So, it;s in our deep interest to strengthen ANA, so that it can take on the blows by taliban after 2014. A strong and stable Afghanistan is in our Long term Interest and we should do everything to help them.

how its going to help out his career i am asking? You never know who will rule Afghanistan after him. It may be Taliban or Hizb e Islami or his staunch rivals.

Karzai's office head is a Hizb-e-Islami and many many other high level authorities within presidential palace are from hizb; hizb has majority of parliamentarians and have ministers in the cabinet. So Hizb-e-Islami is already with the government.... Taliban can't come back - it's now over 2 years the security has been transferred to ANSF they couldn't even "tried" to outrun a single district from ANSF! but on the contrary they have been sweep by ANSF from many northern, western and eastern districts where they had presence.

So if they can overtake the government first they should prove that they can over take a single district out of 280+ districts all over Afghanistan :)

Taliban days are out. US and west will now allow Taliban to come back. They have seen that effect. We are ready to work with Afganistan for common interest...

India can provide small arms, AFVs, 105mm Mountain Arty, Tech, Medicare, Infra (we already do - 2bn$) , recon planes, food aid and more.

If you understand Hindi "Leejao bhai jo chaihye apne baapu ka ghar samjho, bas jaate waqt pardosi jhopdi ko thoda prasad de dena".

That will remained to be seen after the elections in Afghanistan next year.

Still the question how karzai will take advantage politically by such dealing ?

But wouldnt we all prefer the democratically elected govt to speak to Taliban from a position of strength?

Of course, but based on strenght of the public and of a major part of the country, not based on arms, which is not the solution as the NATO forces has proven. Afghanistan is still splitted in different groups with differen interests and as slong the majority is not supporting the government, they won't be able to stand against the Taliban, or control them. And if that is possible, India will have a great opportunity in Afghanistan, as an economical partner, as a supply for oil and gas... and also for arms sales, so stability must be our first aim and not weapon sales.

Why is everyone assuming that the NATO forces will be gone totally?

Because the major forces that would make a difference will be gone, what's left is a low number of security forces mainly, or troops to support Afghan forces in training and logstics, possibly some special ops. However, the Afghan government and their forces will take over responsibility and currently it's not clear what will happen then.

New Developement

Mi-17-V5_Russian state arms exporter Rosoboronexport announced that Russia will deliver 12 Mil Mi-17V5 military transport helicopters to Afghanistan national army by the end of 2013.

The deliver of the helicopters to Afghan armed forces is part of the $367.5 million deal signed between Pentagon and Rosoboronexport in 2011, which included delivery of 21 Mi-17V5s.

US officials have also announced that the deal with the Rosoboronexport could worth up to $900 million which will also include spares and servicing.

Grigory Kozlov, director of Rosobornexport’s helicopter exports department quoted by Russia’s state news agency, Ria Novosti said, “The option agreement has been signed and the delivery will be completed by the end of this year.”

Kozlov said Pentagon has already started paying for the option deal as well as delivering US equipment to be installed on Russian helicopters specifically for Afghan missions.

According to Grigory Kozlov, additional Mi17 helicopters will be purchased for the Afghan national security forces despite opposition from a number of US lawmakers.

He said, “I think this issue (the additional purchase) will be decided by the end of May and we will enter a new round of talks on the delivery of helicopters on top of the current 21 plus 12 units.”

Russian-made helicopters have a long history in Afghanistan and is preferred better than the helicopters due to their low prices, durability and simplicity.

Meanwhile NATO is trying their best to maintain the status-quo in Afghanistan.Meanwhile service ceiling of Mi-17 is enough to beat Anza.;)

Yes, politically Karzai still have significant popularity among Afghans no matter how hard Afghans hate him but at the end of the day he has changed the lives of many Afghans, for having a political role after leaving office he is currently working on a team which he may present to Afghans in up coming elections; psychologically Afghans have hard belief if ANSF have heavy weapons they could be a challenging force to any type enemy and if Karzai succeeds to get military hardware from India or any other military allies he will gain much popularity among Afghans.

India can provide interest free loan to our Afghan brother to buy FC-1 fighters from China. ;)
