Qaim terms July 5 as darkest day in Pak history

Updated at: 1715 PST, Sunday, July 05, 2009
KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shahhas said that 5th July is darkest day in the history of Pakistan.

On this day late Gen Ziaul Haq overthrew the elected government of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and seized fundamental rights of people by amending constitution, he said.

"General Zia divided people in sects by raising slogan of Islamic system in the country and pitched people to fight on religion and ethnic basis. He also gave the country gifts of Kalashnikovs &heroin. He destabilized all national institutions and plunged the country into darkness," said Qaim Ali Shah in a message on the eve of a 'Black Day' being observed by PPP on July 5.

Qaim Ali Shah said that Zia also deprived people of their basic rights but PPP workers under the dynamic leadership of Benazir Bhutto and Nusrat Bhutto carried out massive struggle against the dictatorship of General Zia and undergone imprisonment. They fought Zia dictatorship with bravery and courage and established a new example of struggle, he said.

CM said that Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was not only the leader of oppressed people of Pakistan but also of Asia. It was Bhutto who quit the foreign ministry and launched a great struggle against dictators and anti-state elements.

He said that Gen Zia toppled the Bhutto regime and promised to hold elections within three months but he backed out of his promise, extended his tenure, implicated Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in a false case and separated him from people by hanging him. Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that it was the mistake of dictator Zia that people will soon forget their leader, who lives in the hearts of people.

Syed Qaim Ali Shah said that it was Bhutto who shifted politics from drawing rooms to streets, fields, factories and gave voice to the oppressed people. Bhutto also taught people how to get their rights. The services of Shaheed Bhutto rendered for the nation would be remembered for ever. He said that Bhutto gave the country the great gift of the constitution of 1973.

This truly is one of Pakistan's greatest tragedies, the First prime minister was shot Liaquat Ali Khan to make way for a army coup, than 5th of July the First elected prime minister ousted and later hung Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. It cost Pakistan so dearly that we are stuck with its aftermath of never ending terrorism brought by every Dictator/General/Gazi.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Zia Ul Haq were both terrible leaders (Zia was worse no doubt), and the PPP is a corrupt party!

Pakistan hasn't had any good leaders since Jinnah!

I don't know when some political leader get killed then we start huge an cry. PPP is always v good in adding "Shaheed" with their leader names. While none of their "Shaheed" leader died for Islam or islamic nations. The death sentence wasn't given by Zia to ZAB. But SHC's 17 judge (full) bench actually did that. So who was actually more responsible? the zia or Army generals who supported him or he judges. So for just one person, people actually go against whole pakistani establishment. ZAB wasn't a saint. Because of him we have bangladesh not with us. He killed lots of sindhis at his time, just to come up. (apart from his good steps like, nuclear program), he was still a culprit, murder currupt who used Pakistan's money/land just to buy his jiyals. there are also evidence that he even toke oath from those people that they will vote for him forever just for 5 marla plot.

People need to remember that just because Zulfikar Ali Bhutto achieved power as a civilian does not mean that he did not become a dictator (he was the country’s first civilian martial law administrator before that). He had popular appeal at first like most dictators, but he went on to lose much of that through his own authoritarian actions. His was a deeply flawed personality and this led him to rig the elections despite PPP’s fairly good chances. He, like Nawaz Sharif, tried to interfere in army affairs by dismissing the chief prematurely and breaking the chain of command. Furthermore Zia-ul-Haq was his chosen man, no one else’s. The country during his rule was no better than the state of affairs of Pakistan during Musharraf’s clashes with the lawyer’s movement, and Bhutto’s violent crackdowns against protesters were beyond anything Musharraf, Zia or Ayub tried.

It’s about time that we learn the lessons that need to be learnt from history and move on without these sensationalist moaning rituals designed by PPP propagandists to entice their mob-like supporters. PPP had more than enough shots at ruling our country and fixing whatever ‘horrible policy mistake’ Zia might’ve committed, but what happened was that the Taliban actually acquired power in Afghanistan with Pakistan’s backing during ‘Shaheed’ BB’s rule. So there is no point entertaining this lame family feud for those of us who have educated opinions. Leave the cheap rhetoric to those who need it, our ministers apparently.

ZULFI BHUTTO changed PAKISTAN POLITICS forever. He is responsible for turning NATIONAL POLITICs into PARTISAN or JIYALA thing. By defination REWARDS & BENIFITS only for PARTY members & who sides with 'me' in every wrong. He laid the first foundation stone for all the mess which has evolved into 'FEASIBLE & OPPURTUNIST LOTACRACY'.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto is perfect example of Civillian dictator. He got what he deserved.I can bet if General Gul Hassan and General Rahim Khan were not sacked and General Zia were not hand picked then he would be still alive today.

Mr. Interceptor, what was December 16th? A party? If you think about it, we lost Bangladesh because Bhutto wouldn't concede his defeat in the elections. His defeat in elections from a man that he got released from prison creating unrest and riots during Ayub's time.

So please don't make demigods out of waderas.

hey this is not fair... I was born on 5th of July.

No matter if bhutto was Good or Bad. Zia did become leader by force and that very thing is wrong.

Than explain how you die for a Islamic cause barring in mind countless Pakistani soldiers have lost their lives gained shahadat fighting fundamentalist islam.

He was not part of the government since 67 so how could he be blamed for the genocide and rape of Pakistani/Bangladeshi women in Bangladesh, he was appointed in late 71 to lead the delegation of Pakistan to the United Nations by the than dictator there was no other great foreign minister of Pakistan that could speak for our rights, and later that year we lost Bangladesh. What shame this common history is not told to you. This leader later on freed some 90 thousand Pakistani soldiers along with thousands of kilometers of land held by India. He created the Pakistan China friendship and the Pakistan France friendship which every Pakistani admires, he was on the brink of creating Pakistani Russia friendship but was not to be.

Asim he left the government in 67 on the very day of Tashkent agreement, he was not in Bangladesh raping women and committing genocide. So you better update your history here Asim. I can pour the whole thread with it, which is useless. He was the man who tried to convince and protect Pakistan, he lead the delegation in the United Nations which you probably have seen, his speech was one of the greatest speeches recored in the UN. I know your sympathy but in this era you cant hide the truth, plus we can always quote from the Hamood-ur-Rahman commission if you have any doubts.

you are pushing two different issues. ZAB was convict of killing some pakistanis, and 17 judge (full bench) order for his hang. so thats means he was actually against pakistan, which no where equal to mytr of soldiers.

He was not part of the government since 67 so how could he be blamed for the genocide and rape of Pakistani/Bangladeshi women in Bangladesh,

yeah yeah, back to old criticism on Army. hey you PPP guyz think you can run away, while going against the main establishments? Any how, you are forgetting the criticize started just after election when majeeburrehman got higher seats then bhutto, and ZAB was not agree to accept his win. and said in a press conference that ok we will make two separate government. well, election commission also done bad job while inviting bhutto instead of mujeeb to make government. Which put oil in the fire. Afterward everything happen which you have mentioned here.

Similarly when bhutto created his government in west pakistan, he declare both separate countries. He started that mess, and also end this mess!!
