Jinnah house destroyed in rocket-grenade attack - The Times of India

ISLAMABAD: A colonial era heritage building, where Pakistan's founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, spent his last days at Ziarat in northwestern Baluchistan province, was burnt to ground after separatist militants fired rockets and grenades at it on Saturday.

Officials said four militants fired rockets at Quaid-e-Azam residency from a nearby hill before storming the poorly-guarded building. They hurled grenades and killed a policeman guarding the building.

"Around 1:45 am three rockets were fired from surrounding hills that landed and exploded inside the building piercing and charring its roof and wooden structure," said Nadeem Tahir, a top local official.

He said the blasts triggered fire in the two-storey building that gutted Jinnah's dresses, chairs, beds, cupboards, books and photographs.

As there were no fire fighters in Ziarat, the local administration had to call them from the province's capital of Quetta, around four hours away. "In four hours, the entire wooden structure of the building except the exterior concrete walls were damaged," Tahir said.

Officials said six more bombs planted inside the residency were defused.

Interior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said the Balochistan Liberation Army was responsible for the attack and that the separatist group had replaced the Pakistan flag with its own.

The beautifully designed building in the scenic resort town was constructed in 1892, and served as the residence of the Governor General's agent in the region.

Jinnah spent his last days while he was suffering from tuberculosis few months before his death in 1948.
