why are the russians so concerned about the export potential of the FC-1/JFT because it will cut into their nice little arab/3rd world market for MiG-29s because the chinese aircraft offers a similar and comparable performance and option with price the most attractive USP. $15-20m v. a MiG-29 at almost double the price.

Generally speaking arab/3rd world countries have very different criteria for their choice of weapons - For instance lets for arguments sake assume that Syria operated JFT could they count on Pakistan to effectively counter the US or Russia or UK or France?
If you recall Malaysia bought Agosta 90B, which of those was built by Pakistan? That leaves the likes of Zimbabwe, even more of basket case than Pakistan.

Will the PLAAF eventually opt for FC1? What enables you to suggest that with confidence? What have they been waiting on? And if they are waiting on a better engine, why would the so called arab/4rd world Air Forces not to the same? recall we also were sold the same line about AK - we even named the weapon to their liking , how many have they bought?? Because those deals are about geo-strategic calculations, when these arbis can bring Pakistan to her knees by simply using Islamists, why would they give these naive uniformed salesmen the time of the day??

I think they already had operational j10 before jft was operational --- they converted the j10 into a mutirole fighter... why would they be operating 2 multirole fighters carrying the same weapons ? later blk3 with ws13 maybe..

In case of paf the j10 if inducted might be in specialized role

Assuming export of offensive weapons with range more than 350km is banned, and by looking at the size of the missile, i guess it would be about 300-350km.

Its 390km.

Briefly consider the following three aircraft, JF-17, F-16 and MiG-29, in rough figures, respectively:

Empty weights are 14,000, 19,000 and 29,000 lbs.
Loaded weights are 20,000, 26,500 and 41,000 lbs.
Maximum weights are 28,000, 42,500 and 54,000 lbs.

Dry thrust is 11,500, 17,200 and 20,000 lbs.
Maximum thrust is 19,400, 28,600 and 40,900 lbs.

It is obvious that the JF-17 is a lightweight against the F-16 and the much bigger MiG-29.

The JF-17 is a great aircraft for what it was designed to be, but an F-16 or MiG-29 it clearly is NOT.

can you upgrade f16s whenever you want to whatever specs you like? can you use any western/pak weapon you like? do you have the source codes & sustainable spares? do you have the refuelers needed to refuel the f16s in air? these things also count in 'capability' and the potential buyer will also consider these aspects -- the paf is happy with this capabilty offered by jft-- who knows our jft might be fitted with ra'ad and an aesa radar even before all of our f16s are mlu-ed to a level still less than blk60/70
