According to the news coming from several Asian Defense Analysts.
Pakistan Aeronautical Complex favors General Electric RM-12 Engine to replace Russian RD-93 Engine.

RM 12 Engine

The Volvo Aero modification of the F404 consists increased performance, greater resistance to bird strikes and designed for single engine use safety criteria.

60% of the engine parts are produced by GE and then shipped to Sweden for final assembly. The fan/compressor discs and case, compressor spool, hubs, seals and the entire afterburner are designed and produced in Sweden.

thats even lower than rd33..... !! how come its possible ??

Tht would be fun .If tht happens it will show how we :pakistan: can control indians decision. :yahoo:

but i think this is just rumour .RD-33 is aint going any where .its there atleast PAF can have the number of required jets with RD33 . after tht they might go for WS13 engine which is currently going through Taxi trials in China.

BTW whats the point of buying again a American engine.The sole purpose of JF17 was tht we can make it without any strings attached.and i dont think tht PAF guys gonna be dependent on Americans once again even for JF17 project.

Sri Lankan, where is the source for this article?

it seems false because:

1) I don't think any country wants to risk its technology being copied by China

2) Why would PAF accept this? It may mean a re-design and can Pakistan do it on its own? How long will it take?

3) The current situation (if true) will not harm Pakistan in any way. They as many have said here already have >150 engines. By the time they build the rest of the squadrons, a Chinese option should be available.

The RM12 is a derivative of the successful F404 turbofan, developed originally by the U.S. Navy for its Boeing F/A-18 Hornet.

GE and Volvo Aero Corporation have developed the RM12 to power the Saab/BAE Systems Gripen, a multi-role attack and reconnaissance aircraft.

The RM12-powered Gripen serves the Swedish Air Force and deliveries to South Africa are planned to start in 2006.

The RM12 provides the Gripen with reliable power and outstanding operational and handling characteristics. Its simple, modular design is reliable and easy to maintain - key to high readiness and low cost of ownership. The RM12's single-engine features include a Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) with hydromechanical backup and a redundant ignition system.

With no throttle restrictions, stall-free operation, fast acceleration and deceleration and consistent afterburner lights, the RM12 is a fighter pilot's engine.

by looking at the length, diameter, thrust its not much behind in terms of power and other characteristics.
It has slightly less thrust with after burners compared to RD93 but more thrust without burner, so cruising at higher speeds will be possible.

It may be a possibility but US and Sweden will agree? thats the question.

Highly unlikely and as of now no such development.

Within 3-4 days decision is not made about replacement, especially since the RD-93 issue is not with respect to Pakistan, rather for markets where MiG & Sukhoi are competing.

Made up story to keep the story going around in circles.

The day Russia says, we will not sell it for export to Pakistan, then people should talk and put up back up plans.

For now all is well.

No chance of RM12 or F404. may be F414 as an option can be looked into but no chance of it being selected. Why because its US product 2ndly IF RD93 are blocked then first option will be WS13 and even if they are not ready then in my opinion the best option will be Snecma M53 engines or even WS9 used on JH7. No chance of RM12/F404/F414.

There are so many options available.

What's the status? Do you or do you not have the first 100 engines?

true, but will lead to 'plumbing' changes and could delay things by atleast 2-3 years as contract negotiations take time these days and nothing is available 'off the shelf'.
