Dawood Baghestani once said 'all Israelis are welcome in Kurdistan'
A Jewish Kurd was arrested on suspicion of terrorism by Turkish security forces in the southern Turkish city of Adana.
Dawood Baghestani is a senior member of the Kurdish Communities Union, a coalition of organizations that include groups with alleged links to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a radical left-wing and nationalist militant outfit considered a terrorist group in Turkey.
Turkish police conducted a sting operation on his house, during which he and three other men present were arrested.
According to the regional chief prosecutor, quoted in the local press, Baghestani was arrested in connection with PKK activities in the province.
Baghestani also served as the chairman of a Kurdish institute in Israel, where he carried out PKK propaganda. He is also suspected of serving as an intermediary between the terrorist group and Israel and the U.S.
Baghestani was described by the Kurdish press as a veteran peshmerga, active between 1970 and 2010. The Kurdish guerilla forces, operational since the early 19th century, have become an important military force in the volatile region, which straddles Turkey, Syria and Iraq.
Since their alliance with the US prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq, the peshmerga have progressively become more professional and better equipped, raising fears in Turkey that their military know-how will be used in an insurgency.
He was also suspected of being an intermediary between the Kurdish militants, the US and Israel.
Baghestani, who is Jewish, is the founder of the Israel-Kurdistan institute in Iraqi Kurdistan, which publishes the Israel-Kurd magazine, covering Israel's role in the region.
The institute does not seem to be active currently. Baghestani has himself reportedly travelled to Israel several times.
Israel has had diffuse relationships with the Kurdish leadership for decades, with calls for Kurdish independence a popular cross-party cause in the Israeli legislature.
Politicians like to assign this rare alliance to a shared experience of statelessness, but there are also non-negligible economic links.
In 2017, Israel was the top buyer of Kurdish crude oil, although the trade has still slumped, due to Iraq taking back control of oil fields in Kurdistan, and Turkey intermittently closing the exporting port of Ceyhan.
He was also suspected of being an intermediary between the Kurdish militants, the US and Israel.
