What's new

JAS-39 Gripen-C VS JF-17 Thunder Block-2.

It depends on whether the JF-17 Block III has been upgraded with a ~100KN engine and has achieved more than 16T MTOW with the ability to carry at least MMRCA class payload, ie, 2 large drop tanks, 4 AAMs, 2 500Kg LGBs and an LDP.

Gripen E can carry 5 AAMs instead of 4 though. And you will need two Gripen C to match one Gripen E in the MMRCA configuration. Which means, you will need 2 JF-17 Block II to match one Gripen E.

In the A2A configuration, the Gripen E can carry 9 AAMs with two drop tanks. The JF-17 Block 2 and Gripen C cannot do more than 4 missiles or 6 missiles with multiple ejector racks.

The JF-17 Block II is similar to the Gripen C. So the Block III will require extensive modifications to match the Gripen E.

There are various other Gripen E-specific configurations that can increase payload dramatically. For example, it can carry 4 medium range cruise missiles like the JSM along with 2 tanks and 6 AAMs, due to its larger fuselage hardpoints. This allows the Gripen to not just commit to a high value strike mission, but also perform air defence in the same sortie.

Of course, the Block III should also come with a full spectrum internal EW suite capable of jamming everything from 0.1GHz to 40GHz without the use of ECM pods.

Let's not forget the massive 3.4T internal fuel of the Gripen E. The Block III has to add an extra tonne over the Block II in order to match the Gripen E.

Matching the Gripen E is a pretty uphill battle for the JF-17 Block III. So good luck.

We dnt know any thing about block 2 so no need to comparision

Well understood that the Game changer could be just your normal Standoff weapon
but it can be changed to something more potent

Thunder's once it gets to Block III will match Gripen NG , loads and we are mere 1 to 1.5 years away from that goal

I did not go over the ground operation role , as I feel we likely need a Dedicated Bomber/slower Jet like LF-15 for that role

All sorts of Mix and Matches are possible

INDONESIA would be a good candidate for Thunder purchase as Thunders are ideal Sea/Ground capable fighters

The JF-17 will closely match the Saab Gripen both in terms of firepower and capabilities which PAF have modeled their jet after. The PAF has shown incredible creativity by modeling their primary fighter after such a great craft. It speaks of PAF ingenuity that they are inducting a plane whose analogous platforms neighboring countries are spending billions to import despite enjoying vastly bigger economy and population pool.

Block III will take PAF to the next level and should easily take care of every IAF platform except the Rafael.

Gripen program will always stay ahead from JF-17 in terms of easy access to advance electronics, related technologies, and SAAB's strong industrial background. But JF-17 costs much less then Gripen. Gripen is like BMW or Mercedes, JF-17 is like Toyota, Honda. They have same jobs but different price ranges.

China's industrial base is available to jf17 which in my opinion should be larger than that if europe

@AZADPAKISTAN2009 avoid creating duplicate threads on similar matters. A bit of search can help and we can continue with existing thread for academic & quality discussion so that information wouldn't be scattered all over the Forum.

its just not about industrial base its also about BRAND EQUITY which is high for western origin brands than Chinese and in case of JF-17 Pakistani aviation Industry is not even properly recognised as BRAND, so take no offence when some value Gripen more over JF-17 even if on practical ground they both migth be equal.

Brand equity is the reason why Apple is still alive and not yet 6 feet underground courtesy of Microsoft.

Meh, that's another story for another day....

A souped up Mig 21 versus the Gripen!? Seriously?

No! They aren't buying a souped up MiG 21. They will either choose between US and/or Russia.

your own f16 and f18 are more than 40 years old. Other than F35 your all planes are Mig21 generation
