Japan has a more mature and advanced societal development than many of our peers, the nation is --- ultra developed. I don't think we should be comparing HDI or quality of life between Japanese vs Chinese Et al. We shouldnt make this into a dickmeasuring contest.

japan is of course one of the most developed nations, i am not comparing per-say. i didnt even mention hdi?
i merely meant said that spending is low as percent of GDP but there are reasons for that.

Not rich, but well off. The culture of excessive spending is and has never been part of Japanese culture. We are still very much Confucian -- in the fact that we place emphasis on saving one's earnings.

When an average Chinese travel to Japan, he would never feel his big economy affect, he just feel how small his wallet is.
