TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan unveiled on Friday a record 114.4 trillion-yen ($863 billion) budget for the next fiscal year from April, pushed up by increased military spending and higher social security costs for a fast-ageing population

The budget - endorsed by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida's cabinet on Friday along with a bond issuance plan - features record military and welfare spending for a country saddled with an ageing population and as it confronts regional security issues from an ever-assertive China and an unpredictable North Korea.

To fund defence spending for military facilities, warships and other vessels, the government decided to use construction bonds worth 434.3 billion yen, to be issued in fiscal 2023, in an unprecedented move.

The budget got a boost from Kishida's controversial plan to double Japan' defence spending to 2% of GDP by 2027, straining Japan's already tattered finances under the weight of public debt at 2.5 times the size of its economy.

In a brighter sign for the economy, the budget draft expected Japan to rake in a record tax revenue worth 69.44 trillion yen, reflecting improving corporate profits and 69.44 trillion yen to lower new bond issuance to 35.62 trillion yen.

The budget assumed next fiscal year's exchange rate at 137 yen to the dollar, the weakest since 2010, in calculating fiscal 2023 budget spending for defence and diplomacy, the officials said.

($1 = 132.5900 yen)

So Japan will surpass China in the number of military budget? If they have USD 863 billion, then they will have comparable military budget to US? But can Japan sustain it, in the long run, unless, they shift to war economy?

Japan looking to expand territory and have more children. They see US in demographic free fall and know they will soon bow out so Japan is looking to take territories like papua new guinea, indonesia, malaysia etc. Japanese always want more and never feel their island is enough. With US becoming hyper social justice and woke, Japan knows its future lies with Russia and China pact

JMSDF will not face PLAN alone, nor will USN face PLAN alone

its called force multiplication and both will go together and even Royal Navy will weigh in, HMS QE was in Japan in the summer

JMSDF can add a very powerful set of AEGIS/BMD warships to the fleet and can bring in 2 x Amphibious Ready Groups with 2 x Izumo + 2 x Hyuga and 3 x Osumi Class flat decks

USN 7th Fleet from Yokosuka can bring in the CVN and ARG not to mention the rest of the US Pacific Fleet from Diego Garcia and Guam and Hawaii

Australia will soon field 3 x AEGIS DDG + 2 x ARG

all of them work on interoperability and exercise together, you can see where this is going

If Japan was to fight Indonesia today they will go extinct all together.. Throwing Japanese into such nightmarish rain-forest terrain could be the end of Japan's population decline. Because all military aged men will perish there and Japan won't be able to reproduce again..

Also unfeasible due to terrain and if they were to ever fight it has to be on either Japan's territories or 3rd neutral territory.. No sane Japanese general will want to fight in rain-forest especially against a mammoth like Indonesia in such a disadvantaged terrain... The truth is that not a single power or potential would be invader from the US or China would want to fight Indonesia conventionally on that terrain.. It's a black hole labyrinth and waste of resources which is why invaders will pass it by... same reasons for Vietnam China currently will never fight Vietnam again like ever.. Because it would be to costly for the Chinese to fight in that terrain hence they won't ever waste that much resources..

China could technically take Australia today with per minimum resources used and basically almost non-casualities hence Australia is hard to defend it's a large piece of rock that is impossible to defend with open terrain

Wont be able to compete with China; China GDP is 4x of Japan's

The trend it is going is that there is a combine Naval Task Force set up with asset between US, Japan, Australia and South Korea.

You are talking about US 3rd and 7th Fleet with possible 5th Fleet (Based in the Med) supporting JMSDF, ROKN and RAN in the Pacific. And with the joint combine command structure most likely headed by a US 3 Stars Admiral and that force would be a future defence in the Pacific.

You are talking about

4 Fleet Carrier (CVN-70, CVN-71, CVN-72, CVN-68)
9/10 Light Carrier ([LHD-2], LHD-4, LHD-8, LHA-6, Canberra, Adelaide, Dokdo, Marado, Izumo, Kaga, Huyga and Ise)
63 Destroyers (4 US Destroyer Squadron, 5 ship each, 16 ROKN DDG, 36 JMSDF DDG and 3 RAN DDG)
31 Frigate (8 RAN ANZAC Class, 14 ROKN Frigate Daegu, Incheon and Ulsan Class, 9 JMSDF Frigate (Mogami and Abukuma)
50+ attack Submarine

I am not commenting on the rest of your post but if you think China can take Australia with minimum resource like you said, then you probably have to think again.

The problem is, most of Australian uninhabited land is inland, and being an island, you will need to land in the coast before you can get inland. Which present 3 problems for any invader.

1.) Australia is very big, which mean most likely one landing spot will not be mutually supported by another. Which translate to you will need to split your force.

2.) Most of Australian approach were habitated, which mean you don't just land on a beach, you are directly feeding your troop into urban fighting once you landed.

3.) Even if you can land your troop, the possibility to go from one city to another is seriously inhibited, due to Australian Geography, it's rocky and barren, you cannot literally drive tank across Australia, which mean you either need to rely on Helicopter or Personnel Transport.

On the other hand, open countryside would mean either you need an overwhelming force to occupy Australia, or we will set up a partisan/insurgence that's make Taliban looks like child's play. The same principal applies to Afghanistan applies to Australia, we have enough hills, tunnel, desert, cave to wage insurgency, only you are talking about 10 times the scale as Australia is 11 times bigger than Afghanistan.

JP gov budget is higher than most countries GDP.

Indeed, it's the 3rd largest economy in the world after all. People just tend to overlook Japan due to its fairly restrained foreign policy.

Remember it's costs Japan a lot more to produce and procure the items than it does China. So even if China has s smaller budget it more bang for buck

Perhaps But given Japan some time to prepare and rapidly advanced their military, they could do what they did in WW2 and take South East Asia with minimum issues (at least thats what they would believe).

Their approach would be likely to take the capital centres and starve out the rest rather than fight in guerilla warfare. Japan with a built up military would do island hoping across south east asia, destroying the food production areas and taking capital cities and towns while starving millions and forcing a surrender. They always go all in and not going to fight with hands tied behind their backs like in the case of vietnam war or China-Vietnam border conflict. Once you aim to destroy food/farmlands and divert water flow to genocide a population into surrender its a different ball game.

Japanese want glory, power and expansion in size and population. Thats why throughout history they are always invading their neighbours. The West is becoming a minority majority country which will only be able to be governed in the future through a ultra left wing woke agenda to make all races/religions/cultures happy. Therefore they will likely become peaceful/understanding instead of hawkish in nature and withdraw thereby Japan will re establish friendships with Russia/China and seek support in their invasions of South East Asia for land, resources and a place to expand their population.
