Air Self-Defense Force F-15 fighter loses contact, crash feared

TOKYO, July 5, Kyodo

An F-15 fighter of the Air Self-Defense Force's Naha Air Base in Okinawa Prefecture went missing during a training flight over the East China Sea Tuesday morning, Defense Ministry officials said.

While the ASDF and the Japan Coast Guard's 11th Regional Headquarters in Naha, Okinawa, are still searching for the plane, smoke, oil as well as what appears to be an aircraft tail were detected in the sea.

The airplane went off radar around 10:30 a.m. over the sea 180 kilometers northwest of the Naha base, while it was on a training mission together with other fighter planes, they said.

Japanese F-15J, 213 were built, first one delivered in 1981, last one on 1997.

Unknown for now. Crashes are inevitable. If an Air Force never crashes, it means their training is weak, or they are not flying.

What is the water temperature out there? Cold? If so, there's little hope. The ejection seat kit would contain a 1-man raft, but even if it is used, the cold can kill. And all that assumes the pilot ejected in the first place.
