Japanese electric rickshaws await FBR’s indulgence to launch in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The only hitch in the way of a Japanese company’s plans to introduce electric rickshaws in Pakistan through the import of CKD and CBU units is said to be import duty – making the product uncompetitive. The elimination of tariff has been requested by the company and the FBR is said to be looking into it.

The FBR is considering ways to resolve the taxation related issues of Japanese investors, in particular, delay in payment of refunds. The Board of Investment (BOI) has also backed a raft of recommendations in this regard, which are based on the proposals of Japanese business groups in Pakistan.

The FBR has also received a proposal relating to taxation on special economic zone (SEZ) enterprises and on new investment and reinvestment. The proposals by investors include a speedy refund of advance tax at import and timely issuance of exemption certificate for advance and withholding taxes.

For its part, the BOI is aiming at simplifying the whole spectrum – from one-window business registration, the tax regime, and procedures and processes at each stage of the business cycle. The BOI’s purpose is to bring transparency by simplifying the rules and regulations, and automating the entire process, thus reducing time and cost of doing business.

With no intention of sounding harsh or arrogant, but how useless u guys are yaar ? This is basic stuff man, I can't even count how many companies make them in India. Heck even IIT students in their free time bring new designs of such E Rickshaws everyday.

Even I know how to make one of these....they won't work in Pakistan as you need electricity to charge the damn things. We get power cuts. If the roof was solar and batteries self charging then this would work. That's why most of us ignore the idea.

A very basic product, negligible R&D investment required even a cycle manufacturing company can come up with a design.
There are a lot of local vendors here giving run for the money to established players live HeroMoto, Mahindra, Terra Motors (Japnese Player with manufacturing unit in India),

Been tried before, they wont sell. It's because the electric rickshaws cannot match the speed/torque of the existing local rickshaws in the market which are Four stroke 150-200cc. Since advent of CNG rickshaws Pakistani rickshaws have been developed to be more powerful than what were being used in other countries.

Electric rickshaws which are being produced right now, if they are to match the Pakistani equivalent will need to be developed with more powerful motors and Lithium batteries. But in that case they will no longer be cost effective even with zero import duty.

This has nothing to do with the tech. In fact, electric bikes and cars have been available for a while. The supporting infrastructure is not available or feasible. It's barely viable here in Europe outside the big cities.

Importing simple rickshaws from Japan into Pakistan, how ludicurous it is. Come on Pakistan should make one.
