What's new

Japan PM says country on the brink over falling birth rate, number of children born in Japan fell to a new record below 800,000 in 2022

It is very serious, Japan must show that it can reverse the birthrate.
Import people from developing countries (africa,Middle East, South Asia, Asean, etc. Same with China and South Korea facing same issue as Japan already i.e dwindling birth rates that will only worsen even more with time.

Or turn to robots

If only robots could solve this issue, then CCP and other country's governments around the world facing this issue, wouldn't racking their brains to try and come out with a solution to improve their country's birth rates.
Only difference though is that unlike others , CCPs own issues here were self made( due to the draconian genocidal one child policy which lasted decades). Else China wouldn't be facing this issue so early on in its development stage.

Make a law to prohibit contraception, abortion.
Make a law to prohibit sex outside marriage.

LOL, We still have 1.4 billion people, still make up one fifth of the humanity.

China and Japan are too populous for immigration to be a viable solution.

Also, East Asian societies are generally too nationalistic and xenophobic to accept immigrants on a large scale. You see what they even quarrel among themselves? Chinese New Year or Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat festival origin, whose traditional clothing copy from who, whose cuisine copy from who, whose traditional culture copy from who, etc and all that nonsense. That's not really a great example of an inclusive society.

If even among similar looking people and similar culture they can feel so proud of their slight distinctness and feel the need to assert a subtle sense of superiority whenever such topic arises, you think they can really accept brown people as part of their mainstream society? They may ameliorate their demographic challenges with immigration but create more social problems down the road.

Yes, i agree. It won't be easy for them to do so. Unlike European countries, Australia or the US. Etc.
Well, will be interesting to see in a few decades from now how they will tackle this issue as birth rates plummets even more and whole countrysides disspear from the map as old people die and young only oive in cities. Etc. Russia too is facing similar issues, and seems this war has only exacerberated this issue even more, with many of their brightest youth demographic running away from the national graft due to war, and the subsequent economic malaise the country is facing for greener pastures in the West.

Yes but thats relative to your country and its resources not others. Of course China will still survive and wont be going anywhere, just like Japan hasnt disspear despite facing this issue for some time now. However, it also means the working population is shrinking with each passing year and they will now be working much more to support an increasingly aheing population thus creating more burden for the government and society itself, thus affecting growth. There's also the danger of the country growing too old before they become rich. Unlike Japan, South Korea, western countries etc who had already become developed country as a whole way before they started experiencing low birth rates. So China is already experiencing declining birth rates and declining even faster eventhough they are still a developing country.

China had grown rich enough, US, Japan or UK are just rich on paper, the super high cost of living plus soaring inflation make average population struggle, their standard of living is no higher than China's.

AI and Robotics will solve the population decline issue eventually. Just need to hold on until the technology is there. China will face the same issue as Japan 10 years down the road. Hopefully China can learn from Japan on how to and not to improve fertility rate.

East Asian culture is too homogenous to allow for mass immigration like western countries. However I'vd argue this level of monoethnic society brings more pros then cons. The leaders of China, Japan, Korea know this.

East Asia will likely continue shrinking for this century and beyond, I see this as their greatest threat. With the total fertility rate close to half of the replacement rate, each generation of babies (~25 years) will shrink by half. There will be a narrow neck of young people to support the large number of elderly.

Only Singapore is actively fighting the demographic challenge with immigration. But that's because we are a multiracial country with immigrant background (like Australia, Canada, the US etc), and small enough to attract sufficient numbers of suitable immigrants every year to make up for the shortfall.
