It's good that it's back to business for China and Japan. Abenomics is a dismal failure and Abe certainly can't afford to have wayward political extremists angering his biggest trading partner at a time when China is amenable to putting the Diaoyu issue on the backburner.

China and Japan will get back to making money and that's good for both sides.

Very good point. Shintaro Ishihara was the fool who instigated the entire Diaoyu affair. He thought he could score some cheap political points by thumbing his nose at China by trying to buy the (originally) private islands from that Japanese family. Abe encouraged him because, hey, he's a rightwinger and who needs China. Japan's got Abenomics and remilitarization.

Months later with Japan facing economic disaster due to the stupidity of Abenomics, Japan is forced to acknowledge the existence of a "dispute" regarding the Diaoyus. Something that Japan has steadfastly refused to do for 3 decades prior. It's the equivalent of Russia being forced into acknowledging the dispute of the Crimea. All so Abe can boost his flagging popularity by being allowed to finally meet and shake hands with Xi Jinping in Beijing. Meanwhile, China has established a new precedent around the Diaoyus where Chinese ships can ply "Japanese home waters" at will with zero repercussions. Not to mention that the Diaoyus are now under "dispute."

China definitely won the long game. But China always will if it's regarding a core national interest. If Japan was forced to compromise, what chance do Vietnam and the Philippines have? Somewhere in the neighborhood of zero and zilch.
