Jamat out with a new trick

Ah, Now Non Jamati Moulovis are Radical Islamists? Keep telling it and alienate the Moulavis.... We will see who wins....who gets the public support .

This is strange...BNP is a very much bigger political party with wider popularity base? Why BNP need Jamaat Party? I mean rather i feel Jamaat should need BNP blessing because Jamaat is a smaller party that the BNP...If i am wrong..then is there any different perception of BD public for BNP?

Its like BJP is the main party and it needs even Bajrangis.

a vote divided against the big party is the main driver in elections

Ah, Now Non Jamati Moulovis are Radical Islamists? Keep telling it and alienate the Moulavis.... We will see who wins....who gets the public support .

Can you point out how many anti-Islam blogs are run in BD by anti-Islam elements?

1. The mainstream Islamic 'ulama in Bangladesh have legitimate concerns about the anti-Islamic blogs e.g. Rajeeb's one.

2. However they hate Maudoodi and Jamat and consider them heretics basically.

Notice none of them said anything much when Jamati leaders were imprisoned or Kader Molla was sentenced, or when the government announced their plans to ban Jamat. Deobandis don't really have a problem with that.

Deobandis, Fultolis, Ahlul Hadith all of them hate the 4.6% party that is Jamat.

;)

your a idiot you know nothing about deoband
deoband see barlevi as heretics

they dont like jamaati but they still see them as muslims

Almost all the organizers of Shahbag protest are somehow related to Anti Islam Blogging.... Though they are protesting against Jamat in the name of War crime using public sentiment, their main target is Islam.... JAMAT utilized the opportunity and published those writings... Now the Non Jamati Mullahs are angry against Shahbag. commie newspaper daily star is trying to portrait them as radicalS in the article. But this is a wrong move, huge proportion of our people are madarasa educated and they will not tolerate any bigotry against Islam. Never knew secularists are this dumb!

kalu_miah, seriously . . . . . RAW? Again? Backed by any evidence or is it pure speculation?

Protesters in Bangladesh demand a ban on an Islamic party accused of war crimes during the 1971 war. Analysts say that Pakistan should also try those responsible for perpetrating violence in its former eastern wing.

On Sunday, February 17, Bangladesh's parliament amended a law to allow the prosecution of the country's biggest Islamic party, Jamaat-e-Islami, which many accuse of helping the Pakistani military massacre Bengali people during Bangladesh's 1971 war of independence from Pakistan.

Islamabad has always denied its role in the massacre during the war. No Pakistani government has formally apologized to Dhaka for the killings. Nationalist parties in Bangladesh, however, claim that the Pakistani army and its supporters killed around three million people during the war.

Thousand of protesters in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka are currently demanding a ban on Jamaat after one of the group's leaders, Abdul Quader Molla, was found guilty of crimes against humanity by a war crimes tribunal two weeks ago. The tribunal sentenced Molla to life in prison, but the protesters are demanding the death penalty for him and for those convicted by the tribunal.

Rights organizations, however, say the tribunal falls short of international standards.

Domestic politics

Jamaat-e-Islami and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia say the trials are bogus and are part of a political campaign to repress opposition. Both parties boycotted Sunday's parliamentary session, which passed the amended law after it was approved by the cabinet.

The Bangladesh Awami League's government rejects the accusations and says the trials are essential to "heal wounds" from the 1971 war. On Saturday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that Jamaat had "no right to be in politics in free Bangladesh" and that she would support the ban.

Jamaat had been briefly outlawed by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country's founder and Hasina's father, in the 1970s for supporting Pakistan during the war. After the assassination of Rahman in 1975, a military government scrapped the ban.

'Too late'

Jamaat-e-Islami was founded by a Muslim theologian Abu Aala Maududi in 1941 and is active in politics in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. Though Jamaat is not very popular in any of these countries, it enjoys a considerable middle-class support in big cities, particularly in Pakistan.

Pakistani liberals critical of the military's role in Pakistan's politics today also accuse Jamaat of unleashing terror on Bengali people during the 1971 war. They also demand that those responsible for violence be tried, and that Islamabad officially apologize to Dhaka.

"A commission was formed in Pakistan in the 1970s to probe the incidents during the 1971 war. The report prepared by the commission remains classified and confidential but some of its parts got leaked in 2000," Dr. Jaffar Ahmed, professor of Pakistan Studies at the University of Karachi, told DW. He said that the leaked excerpts of the report had accused a number of people, including Pakistani military generals, but that no action had been taken against them.

"If the main culprits are never indicted, we should not expect that those who worked on behalf of them will ever be tried," Ahmed said, alluding to Jamaat. "In any case, I think it is too late now to act against these people and groups. In Bangladesh, too, it is more a political stunt by the government than anything else."

Waqas Jafri, a Jamaat-e-Islami leader in the central Pakistani city of Lahore, told DW in an interview, "India is instigating the campaign against Jamaat" because it did not like to see a strong Islamic party in Bangladesh.

"Sheikh Hasina's government is backed by India, and I see a conspiracy to defame Jamaat-e-Islami,
" he added. "The tribunal itself is controversial and many international organizations have criticized it."

Jafri also said that a resolution in parliament was not sufficient to outlaw a political party, which, he said, had been playing a constructive and active role in politics in Bangladesh.

The Jamaat leader defended his party's role in 1971 and said that it had only defended its country at that time along with other "patriotic" groups.

Jamaat claims that that Bangladesh was separated from Pakistan in 1971 because of an "Indian conspiracy" against Pakistan.

Shahbagh movement not against religion’
Staff Correspondent, bdnews24.com

Imran H Sarker’s allegation came on Tuesday night from the main stage of the protest that has rocked the country demanding death penalty to all war criminals.

He said similar propaganda was also launched against the supporters of independence during the 1971 Liberation War. “But all propaganda will be washed away this time by waves of patriotism just like the way it happened in the past.”

The Blogger and Online Activist Network Convenor, Sarker also urged everyone to unite against war criminals, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir regardless of their religion and caste.

The protest which was launched on Feb 5 hours after the Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla was awarded life imprisonment on war crimes charges has now turned into a mass uprising across the country.

The movement at the Shahbagh intersection, now christened Prajanmo Chattar, is continuing for the 15th straight day with massive support and solidarity from across the country, including Parliament, political parties, social and cultural organisations and people from all walks of society.

However, the protesters are still carrying on their movement facing propagandas and pains following the death of one of their comrades, blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider.

Imran Sarker said: “Some of the media outlets, which are financed by war criminals and mass murderers, have been publishing offensive, falsified, bizarre and fictitious news over this uprising of the people since the beginning.”

“The agitating people have boycotted with contempt this yellow journalism promoting *******-backed newspapers.”

Referring to the support from the people across the country, he said: “The collaborators of the mass murderers have become desperate to launch their final attack.”

“We saw in the past that whenever existence of these people, who use religion for business, is at stake, they start tapping the people’s religious sentiment to turn Bangladesh into a hell.”

“They did the same in 1971. These demons tried to legalise genocide, rapes, and loots in the name of religion and by using it.”

Sarker said: “But the people have risen. All propagandas of the anti-liberation force and enemy of the country will be blown away.”

The spokesperson urged the people to keep their eyes and ears open and remain alert against the propaganda. “Do not get confused by any kind of propaganda in the name of religion.”

He continued: “No malevolent or hateful remarks came from the Ganajagaran Mancha against any religion, much less Islam. There is no reason for it to happen.”

“All hateful words uttered here are against war criminals, ******* and their collaborators.”

“Religion is personal, but the state is everyone’s. We won’t let one strike of the fanatics and fundamentalists touch the holy land of Bangladesh. Our battle against these evil is still going on and will continue,” he said.

Responding to reports of several newspapers over the protest at Shahbagh, Sarker said: “Ganajagaran Mancha is not a secret place. Everyone in the country is watching what is going on here.”

He urged the journalists not to ask the protesters any question about any other issues except their seven-point charter demands.

He delivered the speech on Tuesday night in front of thousands of people at Shahbagh where the scene was still much the same as it was at the beginning.

Earlier in the day, many new organisations expressed solidarity with the protests while a large number of students from schools, colleges and universities gathered at Prajanmo Chattar and kept the air there filled with slogans and songs all day long.

The demonstrators announced release of balloons in memory of the martyrs of the Liberation War at 4:13pm on Wednesday. They also asked everyone to write a letter to the martyrs and tie it to the balloon.

Requests have been sent out to all educational institutions to sing in harmony the ‘Ekushey song’ throughout Bangladesh on Feb 21 at 3:00pm.

The protesters are also set to hold their third grand rally at Shahbagh that day.

International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Feb 5 had awarded Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla life in prison for war crimes perpetrated during the Liberation War.

Hours after the pronouncement of the verdict, protests began at Shahbagh at the initiative of the Blogger and Online Activists Network demanding capital punishment for Molla. Later protests grew in number of participants and intensity to demand death for all war criminals and a ban on Jamaat.

Amidst the protests, the government amended the ICT Act ensuring the prosecution’s right to appeal against any verdict of the tribunal and keeping options to try parties or organisations for war crimes.

I have read the article Mr. Munshi mention on other post and its disturbing on so many levels.

seems the awami conspiracy theory gone wrong and backfiring expected.

this is funny that in the garb of "war crimes trial" the anti-Islam hindutva sections have started targeting Islam through blogs.

There is need to separate the two and the educated Bangladeshis need to point out these anti-Islam stuff.

Anti-Islamic elements of our society is very weak whatever they are up to, they will fail. Awami isn't fool. If its necessary they will not hesitate to sacrifice anti-Islamic elements to get public applause.

BNP blasts bloggers’ anti-Islamic remarks

Dhaka: Opposition BNP on Tuesday night strongly condemned and protested the indecent and derogatory remarks about Almighty Allah, Prophet Hazrat Mohammad (pbuh), his family and disciples and Islam posted by some bloggers on blogs and social media websites.

In a statement, the party said, “It’s already come to the notice of the people of the country that some bloggers have hurt the religious belief and sentiment, and the country’s culture and tradition by making disparaging remarks about Allmighty Allah, Rusul (SM) and Islam on online blogs and social websites.”

Denouncing the remarks, the party said only perverted people and insane can make such comments. “BNP considers it as a part of meanly motivated and deep-rooted conspiracy,” the statement said.

The party alleged that had there been no covert patronage of the government the online bloggers would not have been able to carry out such anti-Islamic propaganda.

The statement, signed by BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said, “BNP strongly believes in the affinity of all people irrespective of religion and race.”

Mentioning that the nation has no tradition to belittle any religious community, the party said the people of all religions have been living in peace and coexistence in the country for thousands of years.

“Every religious community is involved with deep emotion and pure affection about the Creator and His messenger,” the statement said adding that there will be strong repercussion among people if the emotion is hurt.

It said the people of Bangladesh never accept any disrespect to the sanctity and dignity of Allah and his messengers.
