China should have tried to uprate the WS-9 Spey (which has a proven CARRIER single-engine track record aboard A-7 Corsair II), instead of reverse-engineering the F101/110/CFM-56 family into WS-10. The last afterburning TF41 Spey proposal could potentially generate over 28,000 lb of thrust, about comparable to AL-31F.

The engines, maybe. Thrust was never the problem, it was reliability. Much more interesting is the average time between replacement.



Stealthy is useless, with missiles on the outside reflections would cause the RCS to go to 20+. A clean J-10B might be very stealthy but a clean J-10B won't contribute much to combat anyways.

Not exactly. It's better to reduce much RCS as possible than to leave it and put weapons on it. Eurofighter, Rafale, and J-11B/J-15 both carry weapons externally, but they still have a small combat RCS because of the RCS reduction technologies in the airframe.

Chinese articles say that the J-10B's RCS is 0.3 m^2.
