Jammu: Police personnel will soon get American Sig Sauer assault rifles and pistols to carry out anti-militant operations, officials said.
The Army has already equipped its personnel guarding the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan and Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China with the state-of-the-art rifles.
Police is probably the first in the country to get the modern weapons, they said, adding that the force will be procuring 500 Sig Sauer-716 rifles and 100 Sig Sauer MPX 9mm pistols.
The special operation group (SoG) and personnel deployed for the security of protected people will be equipped with the weapons, they said.
According to officials, the Police had recently floated global bids on the government buying portal GeM (Government e-Market) for purchasing the assault weapons.
The Sig Sauer-716 assault rifle has a more powerful 7.62x51mm cartridge as compared to the 5.56x45mm intermediate cartridge of the INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifles used by police, officials said.
The rifle, which weighs 3.82 kilograms without magazine, fires at a cyclic rate of 650-850 rounds per minute and can prove to be an effective weapon in anti-terror operations due to its 500 metres range, they said.
Moreover, the rifles are compact, robust, modern and simple to maintain in field conditions, they added.
Similarly, the SIG MPX 9mm pistol, which weighs 2.94 kilograms without magazine, fires at a cyclic rate of 850 rounds per minute, they said.
Both weapons are gas-operated, they added. The induction of these assault rifles will help the police operate more effectively in engagements with the militants, they said.
In 2019, India had signed a contract with Sig Sauer for 72,400 assault rifles at a cost of around Rs 700 crore.
In October, 2017, the Army began the process to acquire around 7 lakh rifles, 44,000 light machine guns and nearly 44,600 carbines.

.
Why not to arm them with Prithvi Missiles? That's all left to be armed with in Indian occupied Kashmir.

. .
Ammo management will be a big problem for India since they have so many types to deal with.

hmmm.... which means the resistance would soon get these rifles. Great!

If Pakistan won't arm Kashmiri resistance, Indian state doing that job indirectly is a welcome development.

We have such powerful cartridge in our G3 for almost six decades. But it's something new for indians in 2021.
due to its 500 M range
G3 has even more range. The Germans were way ahead of their time.
So basically pajeet is arming it's police with a battle field rifle and army with a less powered assault rifles used in close quarter combat  Incredibly dumb India

and how exactly is that since Indian army is actively phasing out INSAS while acquiring Sig-716s and AK-203s both using 7.62x51 and 7.62x39 ammos respectively which are only 2 types of ammo moving forward

The standard issue rifles for most infantry troops around the world use the 5.56 NATO round or of similar caliber
US: M4 (5.56x45)
Germany & Spain: H&K G36 (5.56x45)
UK: SA80 (5.56x45)
PLA: QBZ95 (5.8x42)
Australia: Steyr AUG (5.56x45)

This doesn't make them any less competant. Just a new rifle and a new round

How stupid can Indians get?. 7.62×51 to the police, when their own military is struggling with the #itch called INSAS
What kinda dumb logic is that. The numbers ordered for J&K police is just 500 Sig-716s and 100 Sig-MPX indicating these are specifically for JKP SOG which is their CT unit. Those numbers don't even cover the entire SOG units since the personnel in SOG teams are more than 600

Secondly, IA already received it's first batch of 72k Sig-716s and placed another order for additional 72k rifles of the same. More recently, MoD approved the license production of 630k AK-203s. All frontline troops will be equipped with the Sigs whereas everyone else will use the AK-203 which still uses a 7.62 AK round which has similar lethality/recoil to it's NATO counterpart

Most encounters in the valley are handled by Rashtriya Rifles and JKP SOG. Since RR uses 716s, I believe SOG went for the same to maintain commonality since the ammo truck nearby can carry fewer types. Also, most encounters are finished without even entering the building or some in open areas where a 7.62 cal would prove to be more effective and lethal. In case of a breach, other units carrying the MPX or Tavors can carry out CQB

FALs and SLRs have been using it in our service for decades.
These will be used as a DMR by JKP

India needs to arm its Police Forces inside India. Your Polices are still not ready to for Mumbai type attacks. As for Kashmir brings SIGS or what ever you can't bring peace on Gun Point there

These are not meant for regular police but JKP SOG who are one of the most ill equipped units stationed in the valley but have always proved to be highly effective when it comes to CT ops. In fact, the current rifles they use are AKs' captured from terrorists, some beat-down AKs' handed over by the army or INSAS

This is what a regular JKP SOG unit looks like and it's high time they need some upgrades

We don't need to arm regular police since there's not a lot of gun culture except for some UP, Bihar and MP. Post 26/11, most major cities did establish CT or SWAT units who are decently equipped while NSG also setup 5 hubs in Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai and Gandhinagar apart from their HQ in Manesar. States are more relying on these units rather than requesting central help. For instance, the 2015 Gurdaspur attack has been solely led and handled by Punjab Police SWAT unit despite NSG being on-site

A few examples below

Some units like Mumbai's Force-1 have been trained by Israelis and are decently equipped. Again, not every state has a highly effective CT/SWAT unit though except for some basic commandos and the numbers are currently unknown. Given the threat level, these units should suffice as a first response but if it's spread across multiple locations, they'd obviously have to call in NSG

As for peace in Kashmir, ton of countries have troublesome regions. Same goes for your western front but that warrants a whole new discussion. Let's stick to solely equipping JKP SOG in this thread

A freedom-fighter with the right training will be much more lethal and effective even with his AK-47 than an ill-trained J&K policeman with a superior rifle. Urban warfare is a different ball-game. Something which the J&KP is not trained for.

Agree...and it is quite evident from all the BLA & TTP fighters ambushing pak troops on your western front
