Bob Blackman worked as a Salesman for Unisys Corporation from 1979-90, then as a Salesman for British Telecom from 1991-95, as a Sales Tutor at British Telecom's training college from 1995-98, finally he was a British Telecom Regulatory Compliance Manager from 1998-2010.

Politically, Bob Blackman initially failed in his attempt to become a Brent Local Councillor when he contested Tokyngton Ward in the 1986 Brent Council elections. He was then lucky enough to be selected for the Conservative stronghold of Preston Ward, following the sudden death of Councillor Eric Newton, where after a snap by-election, he managed to get voted in.

Before having the good fortune of being able to contest a constituency held by a corrupt sitting MP, Bob Blackman had made a number of prior attempts to become a Member of Parliament. For example, he failed to win the Brent South constituency at the 1992 General Election, next he failed to win the Bedford constituency at the 1997 General Election, and then failed to win the Brent North constituency at the 2005 General Election.(Guy is a winner, Feel the love)


However, Bob Blackman's story really begins in 1990, when just two months after Nelson Mandela had been released from prison, he blocked Brent Council from awarding the ANC Leader "Freedom of the borough", ( As I said he is a winner) after he learned that Mr. Mandela was set to be given the award whilst hosting a concert at the area's Wembley Stadium, an event which would be broadcast in sixty countries.( True friends of white Indians)

The borough was prepared to host the event, regarded by Nelson Mandela himself as an official international reception, and both Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors were in favour of the honour, but opposition led by Bob Blackman meant that the council couldn't reach the two-thirds supermajority required to confer it.

Labour councillors attempted to use the mandate of their simple majority to proceed on a semi-official basis, but Blackman obtained an injunction from the High Court; an action that resulted in the Labour group leader Dorman Long and Mayor Len Williams (a retired blind man) being landed with a legal bill of £11,000... However, in spite of all this political manoeuvring, Nelson Mandela was finally given the award in June of 2013, while Bob Blackman maintained that he was proud of his actions.
