In this thread, I will write posts to compare important features among the fifth-generation stealth fighters.

Feel free to start your own separate J-20 complaint threat. However, please stay out of my thread until I finish writing the first six posts. After that, if you don't have something constructive to add then please put your posts in your own J-20 complaint thread.

There are things that I want to cover for the general reader.

Chengdu J-20 has best frontal stealth

#1 Chengdu J-20. Has Diverterless Supersonic Inlet (DSI) and Serpentine duct (S-duct).
#2 F-22. Lacks DSI.
#3 T-50/Pak Fa. Lacks DSI. Lacks S-duct.

Five Reasons Chengdu J-20 Is Superior To F-22

1. Chengdu J-20 has maxiumum altitude of 65,620 feet. F-22 maxes out at 60,000 feet.
2. Chengdu J-20 has a combat radius of 1,200 miles. F-22 combat radius is only 470 miles.
3. Chengdu J-20 has EOTS (electro-optical targeting system). F-22 has no EOTS.
4. Chengdu J-20 has EODAS (electro-optical distributed aperture system). F-22 has no EODAS.
5. Chengdu J-20 is optimized for both transonic flight and maneuverability. F-22 is optimized only for maneuverability.

Point #5 is a little complicated, so I'll explain it in more detail. The Chengdu J-20 uses a canard-delta wing design to optimize performance in the transonic range of 0.8 to 1.2 Mach. "Leading edge sweep is ~43°, clearly intended for efficient supersonic flight." The Chengdu J-20 has canards, steerable vertical stabilizers, and ventral fins to increase maneuverability.

The F-22 design only maximizes maneuverability by having large trapezoidal wings and 2-D TVC engine nozzles. The friction caused by large wings is a hindrance to efficient transonic flight. The F-22 has a higher and less-efficient leading-edge wing angle of 47.5°.

It's like Coke vs. Pepsi

The Chengdu J-20 is only missing the powerful WS-15 turbofan engine. Once that is in place to overcome the 15%-thrust penalty from stealthy horizontal nozzles, it will be a great rivalry between the F-22 (Coke) and the J-20 (Pepsi).

Chengdu J-20 has look-down shoot-down air dominance

The maximum altitude is very important. An air-to-air missile fired from a higher-flying plane can travel a lot further and faster with the help of gravity.

J-20: 65,620 feet [1]
J-31: 65,000 feet [2]
F-22: 60,000 feet [3]
F-35: 50,000 feet

For some reason, the text above seems small and hard to read. Here's a larger version below.

Chengdu J-20 is superior to F-35 in eight important ways

Someone needs to inform Gen. Mike Hostage that the Chinese Chengdu J-20 is superior to the F-35.

1. Chengdu J-20 can supercruise. Lockheed Martin F-35 cannot.

2. Chengdu J-20 has all-aspect stealth. F-35 does not. F-35 has bulges above the left air intake for the gun turret, along the wing root, and the underside. The bulges are not stealthy and run counter to the flat facets or continuous curvature of stealth aircraft design.

3. Chengdu J-20 is a larger plane with a larger radar, which gives it greater detection range.

4. Chengdu J-20 has a larger weapon payload to carry more air-to-air missiles than F-35.

5. Chengdu J-20 is more maneuverable (about 9G). F-35 can only maneuver around 5G.

6. Chengdu J-20 has a combat radius of about 1,200 miles. F-35 has a short combat radius of about 500 miles.

7. Chengdu J-20 has twin engines. If one fails, the J-20 keeps flying. The F-35 only has one engine. If the F-35 engine fails, the F-35 jet drops into the sea.

8. The expected service ceiling for the Chengdu J-20 is about 66,000 feet. The service ceiling for the F-35 is 50,000 feet. This means the J-20 will use its look-down shoot-down radar on the F-35. Also, the J-20's missiles will travel further as it glides down towards the F-35. Conversely, the F-35 missiles will have shorter range as it climbs against gravity in an attempt to reach the J-20.

@Martian2 What's the difference between WS-10A and WS-10G engine? Although isn't the WS-10G another name for WS-15
WS-10 was the original engine built in 2005.

WS-10A is the improved engine that fixed the problems in the WS-10 regarding spool-time, reliability, etc.

I think the WS-10G has higher thrust. The WS-10G is an improved version over the WS-10A.

The WS-15 is a completely different engine with thrust that exceeds the F-22 engine.

Here's a quick way to remember China's turbofan engines.

WS-15 on J-20 stealth fighter: F-22 class engine

Does the WS-10G have supercruise or is it just the WS-15? Also, couldn't they add the WS-15 engine to the J-10 for supercruise.

WS-10G might surpercruise if the J-20 carries less fuel and armaments (like half).

The WS-15 is designed for supercruise with a normal J-20 load of fuel and weapons.

You can't swap the WS-15 engine into the J-10. The dimensions are not the same. The WS-15 engine should be larger.

The J-10 would need a redesign to use a larger/longer and more powerful engine. The J-10 center of gravity is also likely to change. That would need to be fixed as well.
