Turtuk is the ‘Baltistan of India’(she meant 'currently') being the last bastion belonging to a sect of Islam called the Sufis of the Nurbhakshiya order, which is different from the Sunni Muslims in Kashmir and the Shia Muslims of neighbouring Kargil and Iran.

We were warned not to take photos of any person here in Turtuk unless we had first asked for permission. It was understandable, as this was a conservative Nurbashiya Sufis Muslim hamlet and we had to be very careful not to incur the wrath of the conservative villagers.

Little known to us, although Baltistan is now an islamic province, in 745AD when it was still ruled by Tibet, the people here were Buddhist and their Baltistani language was a Tibetan dialect (although not comprehensible mutually with the Tibetan that is used in Lhasa) that used the Tibetan writing. Even after the locals were converted to Islam, their languages even until today, and their writing remained Tibetan. It was only later that the Baltistani started using Persian writings to document their still-Tibetan language. There was a recent move to revive the re-use of Tibetan writing to document their language once again.
Baltistan has been ruled for centuries by dynasties of kings and suffered multiple invasions by the Kashmir kings over the centuries. The current king, King Mohammed Khan Kacho traced his Yabgo dynasty lineage back to the 15th century, and was especially proud of his grandfather who petitioned to the High Court in Lahore, Pakistan, to order the Pakistan militaries to vacate his palace.
Baltistan had existed side by side with Pakistan and Afghanistan. But after the India-Pakistan war of 1971, Turtuk was cut off from the rest of Baltistan when the Indian-Ladakhi army marched into Turtuk.

Slowly we enjoyed the process of following the alley until we came to the entrance of the old palace- the Yabgo Royal Palace of Turtuk. This was where King Mohammed Khan Kacho and his family lives. His whole extended family still lived in the Pakistan side of Baltistan today and although they were only 25km apart from his siblings, he could not simply just ride a camel across the border to visit them.

"500 rupees!" gestured Chang Haw Chong. I think he meant 500 rupees for taking a shot in this courtyard. Haha!(They r singaporean tourists, so 500 rupees = 10 SGD- not even enough to buy a pack of cigarettes here in Singapore)

(just some muble jumble about this descendant of a Kashmiri king still living in the village)

The royal moscut and tsamik (some kind of sour yogurt) dipped with some Baltistan naan were the highlight of the royal lunch on this day.

Haw Chong was the first brave man to ask to have his photo taken with the King. I guess despite the King's conservativeness, the other 500 rupees was in preparation for those courageous visitors who would even dare to ask for a photo with his highness. So of course, we all were eager to get our shots. Some more, it was the first time any one of us EVER had a shot with a real Baltistani King leh.

It was good. I was happy. I had been brought to Baltistan. Within touch of the India-Pakistan border. To me, that was highly satisfying.
On our way back from the Yabgo palace, we managed to 骗 ('convince') several local Turtuki's children's 感情 ('doubts') and made them pose for a few shots for us. They had lovely features.

Bye bye Turtuk...

right timing and good strategy is what Pak needs to liberate Kashmir @PanzerKiel
Pakistan can, if possible, have Indians move more assets and personnel in Kashmir... I think Chinese presence is permanent and India will eventually have to learn to live with it and perhaps curtail future ambitions... that being said... increase of Indian presence on a longterm deployment is key here... while China and Pakistan are further integrating the hinterland where CPEC is all the rage... for India it is a one way draw on a cul de sac. Indians will be forced to keep the deployments high to not loose further land and unable to launch an offensive for fear of two front war.
Besides, it opens up so many other fronts, as needed.

time to increase pressure on indian army at Loc and provide momentum to freedom struggle in kashmir

Apart from your linking the LAC with the LOC, I agree completely. There is no contradiction between your analysis and mine; I had said that what China was up to was a seemingly simple action born out of multiple complex reasons, and you say that it is a check, and is to be seen in the bigger scheme of things. Quite so.

As for China having provided India with a secure invulnerable flank, do take a look at Indian dispositions, her order of battle along the LAC; for decades, it has dedicated its XIV Army Corps to the LAC + Siachen + Dras/Kargil/Batalik, that is, all but the Vale of Kashmir. It is this Corps that is receiving relieving troops (at this time of year, there is a cycle of transfers and relieving actions) and nothing more. The RRs that some are discussing are specialised counter-insurgency commandoes of 900 soldiers each but affiliated to their parent regiments and recruiting only from that parent. Some of these are being transferred, as the Vale is quiescent at the moment (hostile hopes to the contrary). Besides this, at the moment, speculation on major troops movements is just that and nothing more. There may have been, however, major additional materiel movement, including fuel and ordnance.

Fair enough. But having a non hostile (at least until recently) border is nothing short of a blessing when you have such a lethal border at other end.

My whole point is that its quite probable that china may keep agressive posture on LAC until India lower downs its agressive tone wrt GB. Its just their way of telling India to maintain status quo.

Again, anything that we say or think is mere analysis and we obviously have our biases. We'll see how situation evolves in future.

I too think that the answers to these will become apparent as the drama unfolds.

Yes and No.
There has been no reduction in combat formation on LoC or Pak IB.
But the transfers have been from counter insurgency unit Rashtriya Rifles which has 68K troops. Many are being posted to LAC as counter insurgency ops in many areas have reduced as no. of milirants has reduced drastically.

Ajai Shukla is the dmae guy who was facing court marrialed from army when he was Colonel (later he resigned). Anyways top Aussie analyst Nathan Ruser has proved him wrong with latest sat pics. He has failed to counter Ruser

Our Main focus continues to be Pak Feldzug.

One difference that prevails now is the people on the top of our side is a master in this kind of operation.
They will only play if there is any benefit

I am not at all sure about that. The outstanding feature of the political leadership is gross incompetence.

I am not terribly confident about the military leadership, at least one of whom has been picked up by this political leadership by superseding the two obvious candidates.

Let us hope for the best.

You knows how somebody promoted to Major General rank during 65 only to run for Lt General without any hat to shows the incompetence .

Compares to that this man is at least knows how to do the job.
Besides actually he is not the one that calling shots .
It is Ajit Doval IPS , NSA .And for diplomacy Jayashankar IFS that specialised in Chinese matters .Both are highly decorated .
PM probably only demands that under any circumstances the border development shouldnt be stopped.

“Increasing China Forces Moved Up To North Of India On LAC”: Mike Pompeo

hhkqu1mo_mike-pompeo-reuters_625x300_30_December_19.jpg

China has moved up its forces along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with India, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday, asserting that authoritarian regimes take these kinds of actions. Several areas along the LAC in Ladakh and North Sikkim have witnessed major military build-up by both the Indian and Chinese armies recently, in a clear signal of escalating tension and hardening of respective positions by the two sides even two weeks after they were engaged in two separate face-offs.

“We see even today increasing forces of China moved up to the north of India on the Line of Actual Control there on the Indian border,” Mr Pompeo told Marc Thiessen and Danielle Pletka of AEI’s ”What The Hell Is Going On” Podcast.

The Communist Party of China (CPC) continues to hide and delay the global response to the coronavirus pandemic that began in Wuhan. It has taken actions destroying the amazing freedoms of the people of Hong Kong, he said.

“Those are just two pieces of the behaviour of this regime of the Chinese Communist Party. The nature and the activity that they’re undertaking, the continued efforts to steal intellectual property, to advance in the South China Sea,” he said.

Mr Pompeo said that these are the kinds of actions that authoritarian regimes take, and they have a real impact not only on the Chinese people there in China and Hong Kongers in Hong Kong, but a real impact on people all around the world.

“The United States has a responsibility and the capability to push back against that, ensure that the American people are properly served by a foreign policy that recognises the threats that emanate from China today,” he said.

Responding to a question, Mike Pompeo said that the recent Chinese actions be it on the India border, or Hong Kong or the South China Sea, have been part of the Chinese behaviour in the recent past.

“It’s not just over the past six months. We’ve seen over the past number of years continued Chinese build out of their military capabilities, and then continually more aggressive action. I mentioned India. You’ve mentioned the South China Sea.

“We see these same kind of things with them attempting to build ports around the world as part of their Belt and Road Initiative, places where they can move the People’s Liberation Army Navy. We’ve seen their continued efforts to expand militarily,” Mr Pompeo said.

For the past 20 years, the US has not responded to these things in a real way, he said.

“We’ve viewed the 1.5 billion people in the Chinese market as so important to the American economy, and the risk that the Chinese would respond by closing us out for the favour of some other nation – I think people have just been too worried about that to actually take the responses that we take to every other country that behaves in the way that China has done,” Mr Pompeo said.

First, who is this that you are referring to?
Second, there are instances at relatively junior levels of the right man being overtaken by the wrong man. But there have only been three supersessions in the history of independent India, and this is the third.

Compares to that this man is at least knows how to do the job.

I wish I could share your confidence. I can't.

Unfortunately, from a situation where we were on good terms with every neighbour, these two have created a situation where we are at odds with every neighbour.

PM probably only demands that under any circumstances the border development shouldnt be stopped.
Let see

Yes, let's see. So far there has been zero development, only a lot of military infrastructure building. NOT the same thing. :D

Major General Niranjan Prasad .
1962 war was also infamous so that the commission report is still secret .

But we have confidence .
May be there is a political favouritism.
But in critical dept PM Modi wont play with politics .
Only merit is allowed .And most of his men are good as professional .Only few incompetent in less critical sector

What good relations sirji?
Nepal rulers was already on Chinese pay roll even before NDA govt .
Previous govt spectacularly failed in checking these kind of issues .
Probably didnt had time because they were busy with corruption.
Remember the diplomatic whirlwind during Khurshid time.

There is no so called good relation in this modern world .Everyone is in their for profit .
Only the peace prevails when you sufficient power on your own

.
:D

How do you connect your two sentences above?

Umeed par duniya qayam hai.

Will return to this utterly fascinating thread later today, after some good sleep.

Topic shifting. You had too withdraw troops from our border. Win for us
