ISRO Tests New Rocket Engine That Could Make Launches 10 Times Cheaper

Biggest indicator of this would be the no of "genuine" patents filed and citations in peer reviewed journals..

Thats why I said, this prof in my dept was awarded the best patents award in 2014 for his patent on combustion instability. Thats a bit tough to get out of 50000 patents filed at indian patent office!

Btw what makes IITs so special in India ?
What do IITs have which other Indian universities lack.. Any1 ?

First IITs are not only an academic phenomenon but a cultural one as well in India.. Majority of Indians want to get into it and they drill hard for it.. Spending two/three and even four years of their lives with the sole purpose of getting an admission.

This process is like a crucible - it allows only the most deserving and hard working students to get in. (I don't approve of this now due to prevalence of coaching institutions) .

Such a rigid selection process ensures the quality of students which is far superior than almost anywhere except for few like MIT but even their rejection rate is a pale shadow if IITs..

That is why a stamp of IIT( Powai, Delhi, Kanpur, Madras, Kharagpur) is still worth it's weight in gold..

OK,no offense to anyone, but comparing IITs to other indian or even pakistani universities is like comparing TATA indica with BMW. Sitting in pakistan, perhaps you cant get a grip of what it takes to get a seat at IIT(first 5), but let me point out ,for the benefit of other pakistani members that nearly 1.6-1.8 million indian students take up that exam-known as JEE in india and out of these only 10000 make it to IITs!- This exam is conducted at an all India level. IITs are autonomous-which means they can take their decisions autonomously and are not under the influence of any political entity.
A lot of students of IITs go on to become professors of MIT,caltech and other american universities. In fact if I am not wrong then Anant Agarwal who is a professor of analog electronics at MIT is an alumunus of IITM

We can indeed go on debating but lets just wait here and for a second think, what it takes to get to IITs- I mean just imagine 1.6-1.8 million students competing for roughly 10000 seats!. You will get the answer. Secondly, the faculty of most of the IITs at least in 2016 are either grads of IITs or have a PhD from a decent foreign university. You should also look at the placement and research trends at IITs and compare it with the best you have got in pakistan. Nearly all of american major R&D firms from Texas instruments to microsoft and google visit IITs for R&D jobs and pay them handsomely- this is again sourly lacking in pakistan!

Your logic is that IITians are the best minds among 1.3 billion Indians, fair enough. By that logic Indian hockey and cricket team features the best athletes among 1.3 billion Indians so they should be the best which they aren't.
By your logic every coyntry having population less than India should have less capable engineers.

But again,I'm not starting a debate.I have always admitted than IITians are better if not equal than their Pakistani counterparts.

@Alpha BeeTee
Nope, your way of logic or extension of that is UTTERLY FLAWED!
I did not say a word about indian cricket team or our athelets, dont you think you're putting words in my mouth out of no where? Are we even discussing sports?Dude,Its the sheer hard work. You can never understand what it takes to compete with 1.8million students on a single day for 1 single seat out of 10000!
if you really want a picture then kindly honestly answer these questions-
1)How many world renowned R&D firms visit the campuses of pakistani universities for R&D profile jobs.Kindly note that I am only and only talking about R&D profile jobs.Compare that to IITs
2)How many patents are filed by pakistani top engineering colleges and compare that to IITs.
3)How many of the faculties are PhDs from MIT,georgia tech etc.
4)What is the research productivity, again compare.
5)What is the "research culture". I would strongly suggest you to pay a visit to IISc bangalore- it was recently ranked at 147th place in the world.
6)Citations per paper of IITs vs your top universities.

I appreciate that.

Russians tested a system called "Holod" in early 90s....but there is debate as to whether this was a true scramjet.

They have had some notable success but I don't think there has been a full outright confirmed test (but we will need more parameters of this ISRO one like duration of pulse burn etc to get a proper comparison)...though Russians have reported success and burn times of 70+ seconds which would be quite commendable if its a proper scramjet.

There have been reports of a successful Chinese test as well, but details on that are hard to come by....and it may have been a ramjet+. There certainly is no video/photos of the actual test as far as I am aware (though I doubt we will see that for the Indian one either).

http://www.popsci.com/chinese-hypersonic-engine-wins-award-reshapes-speed-race

So "demonstrated" capability (esp with neutral 3rd party verification) is very hard to come by with anyone....so don't take the "joins only 2 nation club" thing too seriously.

DRDO's test is the next one. They are saying December, but it's tentative.

Awesome. .... congrats to ISRO

Can we use it on military appliances? ?????

The military program is different.

But you are just talking about the selection procedure.
The selection procedure for the top universities in any country is robust.

Even here in Pakistan, the top universities focus on picking up the cream. They employ the most difficult entry tests to ensure that only the best get in.
In the university which I am affiliated with, ranked 4th in engineering universities in Pakistan, only the top 300 are accpeted from the country.

Gathering the cream is not enough,it's about harnessing that lot after it which I think the Pakistani universities fail to do.

.
Do Chinese have tested it

What is difference BTW WU-14 HGV.

Yes, they have been flying such engines for a few years now.

HGV is a glide vehicle, it doesn't fly on its own power. It's pushed into the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds and then the warhead maneuvers at high speed while heading towards the target.

You people can't even make a conventional rocket engine without Chinese help & aid LOL:lol:
So much for alienic SUPERCO..

Dude whatz the difference between you and that guy who was taking a dig at ISRO's scramjet?Kindly do not derail the thread just because some pakistani members happen to be ignorant!

@Alpha BeeTee
Yes in "any country" it is indeed robust. But i dont see 1.8million students taking a particular exam all over that "any country" for roughly 10000 seats that too in a single day!.Now tell me what percent of that is out of 1.8mn- 0.5%! Well that is the acceptance rate we are looking at.

IITS get the topmost talent ( from the field of science) due to extreme rigorous selection process.
