Israeli raids in Syria: "Lebanon escaped a catastrophe", according to Fenianos
Lebanon escaped a "real catastrophe" on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, two civilian planes that were in Lebanese airspace having risked being hit by Israeli military aviation that was bombarding Syria , has announced the outgoing Minister of Public Works, Youssef Fenianos.
The minister met with Prime Minister Saad Hariri on the matter and the two men agreed that Lebanon file a complaint against Israel at the United Nations.
Israeli planes that bombed targets in Syria flew over Lebanese territory, according to the Russian army quoted by AFP. The attack "occurred when two non-Russian airliners were preparing to land at Beirut and Damascus airports," said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konachenkov. "The strikes were again carried out by the Israeli army + under the protection + airliners", continued the Russian diplomacy. "To prevent a tragedy," restrictions on the use of air defense systems were then imposed on Syrian government forces, allowing air traffic controllers in Damascus to redirect air
Israeli warplanes used 16 bombs during these strikes, according to Moscow, 14 of which were destroyed by Syrian air defense systems, the Russian army said. The strikes left three wounded among the Syrian military, she adds.
Israeli warplanes bombed sites near Damascus, local state media reported, while the Israeli army said it was protecting itself from an anti-aircraft missile fire from Syria. In the past, Israel has conducted several bombings in Syria against the military installations of the regime or its allies, Iran and Hezbollah, the great enemies of the Jewish state.
According to reports from the US weekly Newsweek , citing sources in the US Department of Defense, Hezbollah officials were targeted during the bombing as they were preparing to sail for Iran.
The Israeli army made no comment, neither on reported missile strikes nor on Russian allegations. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, attending a graduation ceremony for new pilots from the Air Force, made no direct reference to this information. But he reaffirmed Israel's will to prevent any "Iranian military anchorage in Syria" which, he said, is a threat to the Jewish state.
