Israeli strike on Iran's nuke plan 'imminent'
Mon, Aug 31 11:02 AM

Los Angeles, Aug 31 (IANS) If Iran does not accept international proposals to roll back its nuclear programme by next month, it faces an imminent Israeli strike, a newspaper article said.

In an opinion piece Sunday authored by Micah Zenko who is a political scientist with expertise in national security issues, the Los Angeles Times said Israel will act alone to stop the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear weapon.

Under the proposals, Iran should suspend its uranium enrichment programme in exchange for a UN Security Council commitment to forgo a fourth round of economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Quoting Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, the newspaper said: 'The window between a strike on Iran and their getting nuclear weapons is a pretty narrow window.'

However, if Iran does not budge, Israel would attack its suspected nuclear weapons facilities without even informing the US, the newspaper said.

President Obama will learn about the operation from CNN rather than the CIA and Israel would rather explain later than ask for approval in advance of launching pre-emptive attacks, the newspaper said.

Those hoping that the Obama administration will be able to pressure Israel to stand down from attacking Iran as diplomatic efforts drag on are mistaken, the LA Times said.

It said Israel never informed the US before carrying out such four major military operations in the past.

In October 1956, Israel, with Britain and France, attacked Egypt to take control of the Suez Canal. But the then Israel envoy Abba Eban never gave any hint of the impending attack to US Secretary of State John Foster Dulles who had grilled the envoy just a day before about Israel's military build-up on the border with Egypt.

In June 1967, Israel started the Six-Day War without informing Washington, despite President Johnson's insistence that Israel consult with him before taking action.

On June 7, 1981, Israel never informed the US when it destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak just before it was to be fuelled to develop the capacity to make nuclear weapons-grade plutonium.

The then Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin had called the attack 'a precedent for every future government in Israel... Every future Israeli prime minister will act, in similar circumstances, in the same way,' the newspaper said.

Again in September 2007, Israeli aircraft destroyed a North Korean-supplied plutonium reactor in Al Kibar, Syria, without informing the US.

These episodes demonstrate that if Israel sees Iranian nuclear weapons an existential threat 'it will be deaf to entreaties from US officials to refrain from using military force', the newspaper said.

Hilarious!!
Sometimes I cannot help but WONDER about the maturity level of those who made that kind of comment. Not age, maturity level, and whether they have been outside of whatever world they are living in.

GO IRAN GO!!!!
Where? Iran is an oil export but oddly enough an import of even basic gasoline. The economy is declining and the latest unrest show the citizenry are deeply unhappy. And now the country is building a nuclear reactor supposedly for 'energy' purposes. Right...More like 'energy' from an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction. Yes...GO IRAN GO!!!! The world is watching a very interesting journey.

Iran is surely not a super power to handle Israeli and american forces.

But gambit United states is also not in position to get involved in another war during these times. and for Israel alone- its not going to be a cake walk.

Israel need a good support from united states and nato.

Yes of course a nuke test will unsettle this region and Iran will end up paying way more than what they will achieve out of such misadventure.

More over these are all propaganda created to get united states and nato forces - involved in something even worst . since iran at current times dont have guts or stupidity to loose fo much for almost no gain.

The correct term is "Citizens of North-Tehran which mainly compromises of students from Tehran University and people from the richer classes". That's not even 5% of the Iranian population.

A small army of Israel is not capable of attacking Iran.
There are several Technical Issues that cannot be solved by Israel alone. USA's help is needed and USA is busy else where.

To cut the story short, I don't think Israel will attack IRAN in near future.

The Iranians are ambitious, they have learned from their (or others) past experiences. A strike on Iran won't be as simple as the one on Iraq or Syria.

Iran is far away, I don't think Israel has that kind of range, even if it did, Iran has spread its nuclear program all over the country, furthermore most if not all the facilities are located underground.

I think Iran has a decent air defense network, and has links with Hezbollah and Hamas, they can make life hard for Israel at home, nothing the Israelis can't handle though.

Israel is surrounded by hostile countries, and Iran is huge, how would they make it all the way over there without being detected, strike targets all over Iran, and get back?

Unless getting back isn't an option.

stupid question, but does Israel have long range missiles? I assume that they do, what kind of range and payload are we talking about here?
