The Israeli Navy has Begun outfitting its main Battleships with a new missile system amid Growing threats posed by Syria ’s alleged Stockpile of advanced Anti-Ship missiles, the Yisrael Hayom Daily reported Sunday.

The Barak 8, co-developed by India and Israel, is a medium-range surface-to-air missile designed to defend against varied threats, including anti-ship missiles, manned aircraft, drones and supersonic cruise missiles.

The missile has a maximum speed of Mach 2 and a maximum operational range of 70 km. The system’s radar enables operators to simultaneously engage multiple targets, and intercept an incoming enemy missile as close as 500 meters from a naval craft.

The Navy’s procurement of the Barak 8, put off for years since the system’s Development was largely completed in 2010, constitutes a Response to the Growing Threat posed by Russia N-produced Yakhont “Ship killing Cruise missiles” said to be in Syria’s Possession, Yisrael Hayom said.

“No ships in history have been capable of controlling vast expanses like the Israel Navy will be able to with the Barak 8,” Yisrael Hayom cited a source “familiar with the details” as saying.

The navy is installing the missile on its Sa’ar 5-class warships. Naval officers estimated that the system will become fully operational in the coming months, according to the report.

Yet, the military’s comment on the report was not immediately available.

Indian Navy is doing good job... All Docks are busy in building Ships, All agencies are busy in making equipment. Navy is buying minimum things from international market.

In 20 Years IN will strongest branch of Armed forces..

In contrast: IAF is busy in flying century old MiG21 (But unwilling to take LCA, as LCA doesn't come with bribe), The Number of Squadron is depleting, Rafael deal is slow (I think Sonia Maino want to milk as much as she can before 2014, while Rafael is waiting for next govt so that it will not have to spend double Dalali. )

IA is busy on running blind T72 rather than buying Arjuna (Same bribe case). IA is not ready to buy TATA howitzer (Again bribe, as TATAs are ethical business group and they don't provide randis)

YES definately,As in recent news in daily mail the INS Vikramaditya successfully completed high speed taxi trial in sea,it is the last foreign warship to be handed over to India with the remaining 41 currently being constructed by Indian shipyard boosting local shipbuilding industry.

So is the October 2013 timeline going tobe true for Kolkata class ??? I hope so

Not exactly, the missiles will need to be installed, then the Harbor Trials of that system will be carried out followed by Sea Trials. So if that is the framework for commissioning/induction; it may be a little optimistic. Unless the installation is proceeding even as we speak.

This news indicates that the Barak-8 has gone into production. Which means that are due for installation in the 'Kolkattas' soon enough.

Israel news release shows that Barak 8 is in serial production so definitely kolkata class will be launched this year only and that too with Barak 8.Barak 8 seems will get inducted to both the nations forces this year only.Israel media reported it, very soon Indian media will also report it.Just need to wait for the news.

Last we know (2011/12) the guidance system of the missile wasnt tested. It was tested in 2012. So I think the the lauchers might have been installed by now. Well sometimes I am optimistic ;)

Lets hope we will get a surprise
+ I will be very happy if Kolkata class start sea trails this year
