Israel to Equip Tanks with New Anti-Missile System

The Israeli Army will begin equipping its Merkava IV main battle tanks with the Trophy anti-missile system, which was successfully tested last week.

The new missile system uses 360° radar to track incoming missiles and rocket propelled grenades by creating a hemispherical protected zone around the tank and firing a projectile to explode the missiles before they reach their target.

The new system will add about a ton to the tank's weight and cost around $350,000 a vehicle. The anti-missile system can operate from a stationary as well as in a moving tank, engaging several threats simultaneously.

The new system is currently installed in the 401st Armored Brigade's tanks and will equip a full armoured battalion by 2010.

The system was developed over ten years by the Defence Ministry and the Rafael Armaments Development Authority in collaboration with the Israel Aircraft Industries Elta Group.

what would Hezbollah, Hamas and others do to deal with this new reality. They rely a lot on anti tank missiles

Well that is why they are doing it, the war where they were butchered by Anti-tank weapons is still in their minds.

This is a new technology as far as i know, let's see what can be offered to counter it.

Hezbollah chief says no war with Israel for now
Saturday, 15 Aug, 2009 3:00 am
BEIRUT : Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday said his party stands ready for military confrontation with Israel but downplayed the probability of war in the near future.

"We do not think there will be a new Israeli war on Lebanon in the near future," he told a crowd of thousands gathered in Beirut's southern suburb, a stronghold of the Shia group, to mark the third anniversary of the end of the summer war with Israel.

"Today we are in a better situation than we were three years ago," he said, referring to Syria, Iran, Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas movement.

"We do not want war, but we are not afraid of it and we say to you: if you bomb Beirut or its suburb, we will bomb Tel Aviv," Nasrallah said in the televised speech, adding that Hezbollah now has the capacity to strike any area in Israel.

Israel's 33-day war with Hezbollah in the summer of 2006 resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Lebanese civilians, a third of them children, as well as 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

The conflict destroyed much of the country's major infrastructure and targeted Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon and the southern suburb of Beirut before ending with a UN-brokered ceasefire on August 14, 2006.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that the Lebanese government would be held responsible for any new attacks against Israel coming from its territory if the Shia group was included in the cabinet.

But Nasrallah said Netanyahu's warnings only amounted to "psychological warfare" and served to sow discord among Lebanese parties and hinder the formation of a cabinet.

Seven weeks after the start of negotiations on a new Lebanese government, rival parties agreed on the number of ministers each political bloc will have but still disagree over who will get such key portfolios as foreign affairs, finance, interior and telecommunications.

Interesting development.

Here's one of my post from another thread which would give our members an idea why Israel was always desperate for an Anti-Missile system for their armour. It will also somewhat provide a background regarding AT systems used against the Israeli armour in different conflicts.

-----------------------------

I would be more concerned with some of the Russian missiles that India has.

They were devastating against the Israeli Tanks in Lebanon in 2006.

Indeed. But it wasn't just a single kind of ATGM, Hezbollah procured ATGMs from various sources during the 2006 war.

Some of them were;

Russian Kornet ATGMs.

The elderly yet aging Russian Sagger ATMGs with a 24 pound missile with range of 3000 meters. The missile was driven to its target using a "Joystick" controller. These were also heavily used against the Israeli's back in the "Yom Kippur" war by Egyptian forces.

Iranian's sent TOW missiles from the 1970's.

Russian 9M111 Fagot.

And finally, Syria sent the French made MILAN ATGM which has a 35 pound launch unit, firing a 16 pound, wire guided missile, with a maximum range of 2,000 meters.

I believe Indians currently are using the advanced upgrade of MILAN ATGMs. According to wiki;
Around 30,000 built under license by Bharat Dynamics. Indian Army has recently placed an order of approx USD 120 million for 4,100 Milan-2T ATGMs.

MILAN uses a tandem HEAT warhead that can easily destroy ERA plates on any battle tank. Trouble for Al-Zarrar but not sure what it'll do to Al-khalid-II's "Special" armour.

As for the 2006 Lebanon war, ATGM's (Both latest and elderly) proved deadly against Israel's modern battle tank, The Merkava.

To better understand the effects of ATGM's on armour, here's an extract from a report published by Israel (State-sources aren't always reliable) regarding armour damage from ATGMs during the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict. Actual numbers may vary.

Of the 23 members of the armored corps killed in action, 15 were killed by ATGMs (Anti-Tank Guided Missiles), and seven by mines. The cause of death for the other 1 is not recorded specifically. Most probably gunfire hitting a vehicle commander with his head out of a hatch to get a better view of the situation. Over half of the armor casualties are attributable to just 3-4 incidents. The ATGM Merkava tank deaths are all accounted for by just 6-7 hits.

There were 14 APCs (armored personnel carriers) hit by ATGMs. In two of these incidents, seven troops in the vehicles were killed. APCs got perforated 11 times. The APCs involved were Achzarits (rebuilt, turretless, T-55 tanks) and Pumas (rebuilt, turretless, Centurion tanks). Three APCs hit mines, killing 5 infantrymen in two incidents (4 in one vehicle). Some 90 percent of these APC casualties all occurred in one night. In comparison, 14 infantrymen were killed by ATGMs fired at buildings. The vast majority of the infantry casualties were still caused by bullets, grenades, and shell fire (including PRGs).

Despite the many hundreds of engagements, there are only 8-9 recorded incidents where Hezbollah ATGM fire was able to cause deaths inside armored vehicles, and four times where AT fire killed troops in buildings.

Another extract from a different source;

The Israelis, as they have in all past wars, collected detailed information on each tank that was hit by enemy fire. Israel won't, for obvious reasons, release all this information. But they have provided some data. There were "several hundred" Merkavas sent into southern Lebanon in 2006. Of those, ten percent were hit by enemy fire (including mines and roadside bombs). Merkava faced modern anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM) for the first time in 2006. Only 18 tanks were seriously damaged, and only a third of those were from several hundred ATGMs fired by Hizbollah. Only two of the 18 heavily damaged tanks were destroyed, and both of those were damaged by roadside bombs. In those two cases, the tank was over the bomb when it was detonated.

Well APS systems are very smart & quick to react, but hopefully soon a countermeasure to APS systems will be in action too. As for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction :)

By the way RPG-30 has already been tested and waiting for production, this RPG has been specifically make for defeating APS systems of tanks, so if an RPG has been made, so can be a proper ATGM after some research.

Check out how RGP-30 works, its a very clever tactic to defeat APS, a workable one too.
