As of June 2017...highways are being built at pace of 25 kms/day. With this impetus target can easily be achieved.

Your 25km per day is the best record but it missed the target. Read the source of this "22km/per day news". Still Best of Luck to India! I also wonder, are these roads all paved highway, or a mix of country roads and trunk roads plus real highway?

The Narendra Modi government built 22 km of roads per day in 2016-17, missing its ambitious target of constructing 41 km every day.

Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari had set an all-time high target of building 15,000 km of roads in 2016-17 but only managed 8,200 km of roads.

This construction figure, however, is the highest that the ministry has achieved till date and more than double of what the previous UPA government managed. Between 2009 and 2014, on an average 6 km to 9 km of roads were built per day.

ROAD BUILT PER DAY
  • 2012-14: 9 km/day
  • 2015-16: 17.2 km/day
  • 2016-17: approx. 22 km/day
Gadkari had also set a target of awarding 25,000-km of stretch under highway projects in 2016-17 as compared to 10,000 km last fiscal.“We managed to award around 14,000 km by March 31. Though we have not met the target, this is the highest figure so far,” said a senior road ministry official.

Officials said delay in land acquisition and tepid response from private developers came in the way of the ministry meeting its target. “But the Centre according priority to roads helped in achieving an all-time high construction and award figures,” the official added.

The highway sector had hit a rough patch since 2007. However, under the Modi government, between 2014-15 and 2016-17, the overall allocation to the sector increased by 73% — from ₹1.3 lakh crore to ₹2.25 lakh crore.

The PM has been regularly reviewing the progress of the sector through his monthly meetings where he interacts with central and state officials through video conference, to resolve bottlenecks holding up projects.

The ministry has initiated a series of measures to de-centralise work . “In the last two-and-a-half years, we resolved issues that were stalling about 80 projects. Only a handful of projects are stuck as of now,” said a senior NHAI official.

Besides, the ministry also empowered states to appraise projects worth up to ₹100 crore and invite tenders. Earlier, all such projects used to come under the Centre, resulting in delays.

It also introduced a new model called “hybrid annuity” where the government gives 40 % of the construction cost while the developer invests the remaining 60 %. So far 26 projects have been awarded under the new model.

Sorry to sound cynical but this is way easier to siphon off billions of $'s, Than it is to actually develop the existing rail network which is the actual logical solution which ever way you look at it, Most of these contracts will go to the super corrupt, highly politically connected parties as they always do.. It's the same story around the developing world and India cannot be immune to that

It's easier to get the masses enchanted by these mega projects with catchphrases that sell, Thats the way they hide the mass scale corruption from the public

This is most least corrupted government we ever had in our history. If ever I trust someone, this govt could do it with least amount siphoned off.

Modi govt approves mega Rs 7-lakh crore project to develop 83,000 km highways in 5 years

NEW DELHI: The government on Tuesday approved the biggest highway construction plan so far in the country, to develop approximately 83,677 km of roads at an investment of Rs 6.92 lakh crore by 2022. The highway construction programme is aimed at pushing economic activity and generating at least 14.2 crore man-days across the country over the next five years.

The programme includes the Bharatmala scheme, under which 34,800 km of highways would be constructed at the cost of Rs 5.35 lakh crore, finance secretary Ashok Lavasa said. Under Bharatmala, the road transport and highways ministry will construct 9,000 km of economic corridors across the country.

The project also entails constructing 6,000 km long inter corridor and feeder routes, 2,000 km of border and international connectivity roads, 5,000 km to be upgraded under the national corridor efficiency programme, 800 km of greenfield expressways, 10,000 km under the national highway development programme and 2,000 km of coastal and port connectivity roads.

"The economic corridors would ensure that time taken for transporting goods from manufacturing sectors is reduced," Lavasa said. He said the road transport and highways ministry has already identified new alignment for corridors, which would open new areas for development. "We'll be improving road connectivity in northeast and other border states to facilitate international trade," Lavasa said.

The government will fund Bharatmala project through market borrowings, central road funds, monetising government-owned road assets, and budgetary allocation. "For the highway construction programme, Rs 2.09 lakh will come from market borrowing, Rs 1.06 lakh crore is expected to come through private investment and Rs 2.19 lakh crore will come from the central road fund and through toll operate transfer model," Lavasa said.

In addition to 34,800 km under Bharatmala, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will parallel implement the balance works of 48,877 km roads under other current schemes with an outlay of Rs 1.57 lakh crore, Lavasa said. This will be financed by providing Rs 97,000 crore from CRF and Rs 59,000 crore as gross budgetary support.

The government has assigned NHAI, National Highway and Industrial Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and state public work departments for the highway projects. "These organisations would be given sufficient delegation of powers so that there's speedy implementation," Lavasa said.

In additional, central and state governments would spend another Rs 88,185 crore in the next three years towards constructing rural roads under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. The government has also sanctioned almost Rs 11,000 crore towards the development of roads in states with left wing extremism.

Yes, I very much know about DFC. If DFC is there, why all these Golden Quadrilateral, Sagar Mala(this being multimodal), Bharat Mala, Interconnected EEZs.

By the way, will you care to explain, which is better mode of transportation for inland cargo, Railways or Road Network. Whats the comparative average speeds, distance covered per day for cargo. Comparative operations costs keeping in mind the Railway network is electrified, maintenance costs. Whats the cost of future upgrades, capacity expansion.

Roads should only be used for Last Mile delivery, rather than to be used to carry freight. For the Last Mile delivery, the State Highways and Rural roads needs to be strengthened. Creating a parallel highway network to DFC is a waste of resources and could be better used to improve feeder roads.

I am not denying the need for infrastructural buildup. What I am asking is why not build up railway network instead of these mega road networks. Roads are expensive to build and maintain as compared to railways.

Why are there men with guns next to the workers?
It's a pic from the Naxal belt, and those armed guys seem to be CRPF Cobras, merely protecting the road construction party from those Maoist terrorists ambush.
