Don't blame me guys, I'm just a neutral reporter:big_boss:. Looks like corporate India is not the only one angry with Modi- Rural India is too. I read somewhere that if Modi stood for election today, he would not cross the 200 mark. Looks like the volume of dissent justifies it.

Is rural India angry with Modi?

Is rural India angry with Modi? - Rediff.com Business

T
he palpable anger on the ground suggests that Narendra Modi might be in danger of upsetting rural India in the name of creating industrial jobs, rues Bharat Bhushan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi thinks that the propaganda against the land acquisition ordinance is an Opposition conspiracy.
He could not be more wrong. The peoples’ movements against the provisions of the land acquisition law are politically ahead of the Opposition parties both in their imagination and demands. The Opposition parties are trying to catch up with them.
Disaffection and bitterness were all too apparent at a convention of the leaders of these movements at the Constitution Club of India in the capital last week. Never before has one heard such harsh language being used against the prime minister.
“In this country, only what ‘General’ Modi says goes.
"He only talks down. What about the ‘Mann ki Baat of the farmers,’ asked a speaker referring to Modi’s monthly radio addresses?
"Another described him as a munim (an accountant) of the corporates.
Some of the things said about him were too sharp to be reported.
A woman leader from Maharashtra who had led the struggle against land acquisition for a special economic zone of the Reliance Group said to thundering applause, “The slogan of Reliance is ‘kar lo duniya mutthi mein (grab the world in your fist)’.
“Narendra Modi today may be in their ‘mutthi’ (fist) but it is not big enough to grab the land of the farmers of Raigad.”
She advised all those present, “Stop measuring land against money.
“See it as part of environmentally sustainable livelihoods, which are being destroyed. “Don’t try to fight your battles only in Mumbai and Delhi. Fight them where your land is.”
The participants proposed a graduated protest, beginning with burning copies of the ordinance and then going on to blocking national highways, even digging them up, and preventing the implementation of the law even if adopted by Parliament.
Modi might still dismiss this as propaganda by ‘five-star activists’.
Had he come to the convention, however, he might have had a second think seeing the weather-beaten and wrinkled faces of the participants in their modest crumpled clothes. These are the people who can change the public perception about him and his party.
And their numbers are not small.
There are at least 252 ongoing conflicts over land acquisition in 165 districts, according to researchers from the Society for Promotion of Wasteland Development and the Rights and Resources Initiative.
This number accounts for only those conflicts where people have been killed or injured in protests and where more than one village is involved.
They involve land acquisition for private entities, using that land for speculative purposes and where project benefits have evaded the oustees.
An estimated 53,000 hectares of land acquired by the government for private industry nearly a decade ago is still lying unutilised.
An audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General of land acquired under the SEZ Act of 2005 has confirmed that the land acquired for setting up industry had been diverted to real estate projects; and that such land was mortgaged to get massive bank loans by corporates for other activities.
The SEZs neither created export revenue nor new jobs.
It is unrealistic to assume that people would believe that the results of land acquisition with reduced safeguards would be better.
Why then is Modi persisting with diluting land acquisition laws?
Could it be that coming from Gujarat, he sees land as just another asset that people ought to monetise if the price is right?
This attitude prevents him from seeing that land alienation can lead to a loss of dignity, livelihood and habitat, besides social destabilisation.
The anger against land acquisition is not only among landowners.
The current policy does not take into account the livelihood of those who do not own land but are still dependent on it -- tenants, sharecroppers, labourers and artisans.
It also ignores those whose livelihoods depend on common lands, common water bodies and other common natural resources.
The palpable anger on the ground suggests that Modi may be in danger of upsetting rural and tribal India at one go in the name of creating industrial jobs -- incidentally, agriculture creates more jobs per percentage point of gross domestic production contribution than manufacturing or the services sector.
Diluting or doing away with institutional mechanisms of listening to those threatened by land alienation may have a political cost for Modi as well as his party.

Modi Derangement Syndrome

The acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the statements -- nay -- the very existence of Narendra Modi.

Modi's positions better reflect the change and new direction that the Indian people have been calling for, but those with Modi Derangement Syndrome would rather stick with failure than even consider voting for him.

People blindly follow Modi or blindly hate him. Very few judge him objectively. Yes Modi is good for the country's economy, and he is bad for the way he handed over land to bangladesh.

first you have to realize not everyone here is a "bhakt", not as you imagine a "bhakt" to be anyway.

so "whitewash" etc is irrelevant because not everyone is here to spread propaganda.

let's give him 10 years and see, should be a problem only for communists and jihadis ;)

This 'AAP Brand' of politics might be new to you guys, and exciting, and romantic, but I have seen this brand of politics and its effect in my home state West Bengal for decades. I know it is futile to discuss it here because you won't move from your position anytime soon, but let me tell you a few points from your own post.

1. Consent from affected people: What percentage of consent? 100%? Then forget about any kind of infrastructure or industries. We lost TATA plant at Singur due to political reasons where more than 85% consent was there, when Mamata became the CM and asked farmers to apply for the return of Singur land, applications for return of only 39 acres out of 997 acres came from the farmers. We still lost the plant, and a future automobile manufacturing hub in Bengal.

And since then the list is endless, Jindal steel plant, Katoa power plant, highway expansion plans, flyovers and bridges, Metro rail expansion plan, water & sewerage treatment plants, etc. etc. etc. all due to land. Even erecting a single electric post became a major issue, people want govt. jobs for every lamppost.

It was all started by left-front govt. in Bengal, and rabidly followed by TMC, they made the situation far worse now.

2. Multi crop land: Most of India's land are multi-crop, you don't want any infrastructure or industries there? For example, are you guys trying to say that the whole of Gangetic planes should not have any new road, schools, hospitals, canals, dams, etc., or any new industry? Is that what you want?

Finally, about who will acquire land, government, or industries should buy it directly from the farmers. Farmers rights are only protected when government does it, otherwise middle mans, local politicians or their musclemen backed by the political parties will forcefully buy the land from the farmers at dirt cheap prices and sell it to the industries, this is something that we can again learn from Bengal, our Rajarhat New Town was made in that way only.

My advise, please apply your brains and think it thoroughly.

Modi increases compensation for farmers to ease rural discontent

r

(Reuters) - Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced higher compensation and government aid for farmers who are suffering due to unseasonable rains, in an attempt to calm growing discontent among people living in the countryside.

Storms have badly damaged crops in large parts of northern India and led to anger against Modi for not doing enough to help those in distress. Dozens of farmers have committed suicide in recent weeks.

Discontent among people in rural areas, where 70 percent of India's 1.2 billion people live, could hurt Modi's political ambitions as he tries to consolidate power in upcoming state elections.

On Wednesday, Modi said his government will increase the compensation provided to affected farmers by 50 percent, as well as bring down the threshold of crop damage that allows farmers to seek government assistance.

"The government's current (compensation) parameters are not enough to help the farmers," Modi said at an event in New Delhi.

"The government is committed to help farmers as much as possible."

The amount of compensation paid currently depends on crop variety and the state where it is being grown. While this monetary benefit would rise, farmers will be able to seek aid even if 33 percent of their crop is damaged, as opposed to more than 50 percent currently.

Unseasonable rains this year have damaged over 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) of crops, but the government says that has no clear link to farmer suicides.

Debt-laden Indian farmers were already suffering because of low rural incomes and weak global food prices.

Modi said Indian banks have been asked to help farmers restructure their loans, while insurance companies will also step in with support.

"Banks, insurance companies, central and state governments will join hands to get farmers out of this crisis situation," he said.
