Is Railgun Answer to Threat posed by IN's Suface Fleet??

I m not saying about immediate induction as its not possible but the way IN surface fleet is expending Pakistan need options to handle them.

It will always on the table. Everything is. But hypersonic missiles are the need of the hour. Even the Chinese are focusing on them. If area-denial is the aim of the Pakistan Navy, then the answer is already staring them in the face.

I see you are trying to be a smartass with your mambo jumbo..

1) Rail guns are powered by Nuclear reactors on board large ship and as per U.S estimates, Pakistan is very much capable of doing it. Energy starved nation comment doesn't any make sense.

2) Rail gun concept is pretty simple and any electrical engineering students can built a decent model in his lab. U.S and China are just trying to get the max variable potential out of this simple idea for their militaries.

Actually, in this current phase of development, nuclear power is the only feasible source. Most current Destroyers don't that more than 10 MW of additional energy to play with. Smart/Integrated Power Systems that will allow a ship to allocate electricity wherever required may solve the problem in the near future. The Zumwalt Class has such a system, and in the future all destroyers will. But until these things come of age, it is anyone's guess. But in the long term, allocating rail guns for the exclusive use of nuclear powered ships will not work - the cost involved would be prohibitive.

.
What may seem "mambo jumbo" to a nomad is what actually happening in this world.

1) Rail guns are .........back.

See now all you doing is hypothetical :blah::blah: without having a fucking clue about Pakistan scientific community achievements. You are talking about scientists who are working on and building Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and world fastest growing Nuclear program.I suggest you to worry about India, cuz Pakistani scientist have always achieved what they have started unlike Indian scientists who always end up paying Russians or Europeans to complete their failed adventures.

Do they have any proximity capability or is a direct impact required?

A piece of metal travelling at a speed of 7+ Mach can drill holes in any ship so i guess one only need a metal projectiles capable of handling speeds higher than 7+.

Best answer within budget to any large surface fleet would be

1- babur cruise missile to be converted for anti ship role...same as US testing tomahawk in such role...

Putting a terminal target aquistion system wont b difficult....
Finding a sea born target at that range 700km + may be difficult ...long range ground based radars +awacs can do the job...but best done via satellite that can also be used for mid course updates to missile

2- anti ship ballistic missile....is ultimate weapon....
Very accurate target aquusition may again be issue....terminal target aquisition system may not be that big of an issue.

Railgun Systems

The Electromagnetic Systems Group of General Atomics (GA-EMS) is actively working to bring electromagnetic railgun technology to the Department of Defense for multiple missions: integrated air and missile defense, surface fire support and anti-surface warfare.
GA-EMS's expertise in electromagnetics stems from GA's long history in high power electrical systems, from developing and building both fission and fusion reactors, through the Navy's first electromagnetic launch and recovery equipment for aircraft carriers.
GA-EMS has developed, built and successfully tested two railguns, the internally funded the Blitzer™ 3 MJ system and a 32 MJ launcher for the Office of Naval Research (ONR). GA-EMS also designed and built the pulse power supply for both guns and is developing projectiles for air and missile defense and precision strike.
GA-EMS is continuing the Blitzer family of railguns with a 10 MJ system designed for mobile and fixed land-based applications.
Railguns deliver muzzle velocities up to twice those of conventional guns, resulting in shorter time to target and higher lethality at greater range with no propellant required onboard the platform. Railguns offer much deeper magazines and lower cost per engagement compared with missiles of comparable range.
Shorter time to the target and extended range – Railguns can reliably launch projectiles to muzzle velocities of Mach 6-7+. A round fired at sea level can reach the horizon in 6 to 7 seconds and still be traveling faster than a conventional gun‑launched munition at its muzzle.
Lethality without high explosives – Hypervelocity impact achieves high lethality through kinetic energy, eliminating the safety and logistic burdens of explosives.
Multi-mission capability – Railgun weapon systems employ guided, maneuverable projectiles which can accomplish multiple missions with the same round. Railguns can also fire a family of different projectiles with varying capabilities, levels of sophistication, and cost.
Elimination of propellant – Because rounds are launched electromagnetically, propellant is not required. This results in much smaller rounds, enabling many more stowed rounds in a constrained volume as well as improved safety and reduced logistics burden.
Lower cost – The confluence of microelectronics, nanotechnologies, and electromagnetic acceleration enable missile performance without rocket motors. Railgun-launched guided projectiles are expected to be much lower cost than current assets for integrated air and missile defense.
Higher fire power – With deep magazines and high, sustained firing rates, railguns provide unprecedented fire power.
Reduced Asymmetry – The lower cost and higher fire power of railguns levels the playing field with potential adversaries

Railgun Systems

Pakistan don't have huge money to buy weapons for its needs, but it can invest in systems which can help bring parity in war fighting capabilities.

I'm not trying to troll here but why are we so attached to Indians? They have mighty navy, mighty Air Force and so forth because of its vast borders and because it can afford it.

One reason why Japan was able to achieve its economic feat was because it contributed only 1% of its economy to defender expenditure. Yes we're in middle of war, but let's stop bringing India and focus on current war against terrorism. If not that, let's focus on building Pakistan education, technology and so forth than waste our time and money on how we can be at par with India. For example we bought some 5 submarines for billions of dollars that we will spend over years. How about we spent that on education or eradication of poverty?

Nobody cares about India, it all about covering our *** from any wishful adventure by Indians. Pakistan needs strict law and order and a working judicial system even before education or anything. Country where books are sold on sidewalks and shoes on shelves in a fancy shop, Don't expect that nation to ever change on their own without boot in the ***.

Because this is not an ideal world...

Today if we are better than syria libya or iraq and taliban are worst off than daesh its only for one reason...

We were stronger.....
We have a dynamic military power....

Education is important but remember the day when our holy propher (saw) died.....
There was no oil in lamp to light it.....

But 9 swords of best quality were hanging on walls

It is still in the experimental stage. The problem with Military hardware is that the true specs are never revealed. So a system which is proclaimed to be awesome might actually fail on the actual day. In the first Gulf War I remember Patriot missiles following scuds into the target.

True there such system available mainly due to power requirements. Only way to power it is via miniature nuclear reactor.

To me the issue of efficacy is more important than power. Seems like another US Star Wars program. A monumental program paralleled only by its colossal failure.

nice article but tell me sir a nation which is neck deep in IMF/WB ciruclar loans and unable to give uninturrupted electricty to its commerfcial capital and manufacturing enclaves/industrial areas how will it spare money and elctricty for rail guns :azn:

Please guys clear one thing about electricity problem of Pakistan. Its not about generating electricity its about huge corruption in it which is reason for energy issue.

sir with all deu respect nobody cares about corruption in the end its about electricty as we are talking about rail guns which work on electromagnetic principal if you have electricty to spare onli then you can have a proper and effective rail gun infra till that happennes everything is just a fancie .... cheers mate :coffee:

Hmm lemme get this...An energy starved nation is looking for an energy weapon on it's Naval ships when only 10% of the defense money is allocated to it, right ?? Cool.

If that is the case then there are two ways. Hard way and easy way.

Hard way (* This is just an indication of what needs to be done) :-

1. Start developing organic infrastructure for building big DEFENSE ships, ELECTRONICS equipment and general manufacturing base.
2. Build few high tonnage destroyers.
3. Parallelly start research on civilian nuclear reactors.
4. Build some big U, then PU civilian nuclear reactors.
5. Operate them for some time to get the hang of it.
6. Building upon the research of civilian nuclear reactors, research on shrinking the design to naval size.
7. Build a naval nuclear reactor.
8. Operate naval nuclear reactor for few yrs.
9. Parallel to #3 start research in high energy density/discharge capacitors.
10. Parallel to #1 Start research on energy weapons namely Lasers, EM etc
11. Culminate these years or R&D to a prototype Railgun powered by small nuclear reactor through a farm of high energy discharge capacitors.
12. Build a nuclear powered ship.
13. Integrate all prototype on this ship.

That's it.

Easy Way:- Wait for China to get one, then ask them for a copy paid with soft loans.
hilarious .... or

There are several new power generation units closed after inauguration if military want they can takeover those for research purpose as their electricity is way to expensive for public due to corruption in agreements.

All current running power generation units are working below their capacity due to non maintenance, a mafia don't want electricity issue to be resolved in Pakistan.

Edit:

@waz @Horus

Is it possible to release KANNUP-1 for military research like rail gun, while K-2 & 3 coming online??

Nuclear Power
