Is Pakistan Better Off Industrially (and More Diverse in Industrial Production) Compared to Bangladesh?

medical and retail tourism (easily $20 Billion yearly)

Number of medical tourists from Bangladesh visiting India annually= 227,000.

Each one of those medical tourists would have to spend nearly a lakh USD to reach that kind of figure.

Yeah coming from a country that buys 20,000 used cars & 7 million $94 worth smartphones annually... Sure!!!

Indians working in Bangladesh remitting money via Hundi ($10 Billion per annum easily)

Remittances from UAE- where some 3.4 million Indians live- is just $12 billion.

Never knew you could make so much money stitching underwear... :D

here are parts made for larger Perkins engines for larger tractors in Pakistan. Pakistanis more or less make all parts for their tractors.
capable upto 100% including engine
hey are self-sufficient in making their own and superbly poised for exporting tractors at some point, with or without FDI.
we have exported tractors to many countries ...

I know Malik Agro manufactures these Massey Fergusons under their own name (MAI) and exports to Africa. I think there are other companies exporting tractors overseas too.

Pakistan has produced , 3 times , more citeable publication in sicience than Bangladesh , I dont know why no one mention this , this is when country is situated in hostile neighbourhood, fighting a war involving superpowers , is in political turmoil

Our (Bangladesh) Public education institutes are pure joke. Private institutes are producing competent professionals and research papers. But, their numbers are very low as private education is very expensive...

Pakistani Education institutes are much better and well managed than ours...

Jinjira people are illiterate as well but their value addition processes are at a lower level because lower grade of people go into these professions compared to Pakistan. I have seen operations in Jinjira personally when in Dhaka. They can cast "Cast iron" items and machine them (same as Pakistan) but the workmanship, quality and the skills attempted are at a lower level.

RFL is a large company that makes cast Iron tube-wells. Pakistanis make transmission differentials and engine crankshafts (mostly for tractors and motorcycles. Huge difference in pricing.

Pakistani roadside workshops make forged engine crankshafts, piston arms and machine them with superior accuracy (hard to believe Bangladesh is even lower grade than this but it is true). Bangladesh output is simpler (machined nuts/bolts type things and small stamped Sheetmetal products), but both in quality and Quantity Pakistani operations are much more involved and the products are varied. Gujranwala corridor near Lahore is the center of light engg. companies in Pakistan and grew up since 1947.

I don't have to say anything about Sialkot (also same area near Lahore) which is famous for cutlery, silverware and surgical instruments (including knives and shears). Bangladesh has no equivalent to that.

Pakistanis also make all of their machinery themselves which Bangladesh does not. Lathes, Milling Machines, shapers, gear cutters mostly made locally. Very active sector. Bangladesh imports machinery from overseas, village workshops use some local lathes but mostly machinery comes cheap from India.

Bangladeshi lathe operators don't know basics of annealing and heat treatment while these processes are commonplace in Pakistan, even in roadside shops.

If Pakistanis invest in Bangladesh in these small operations, then Bangladesh can substitute imported auto parts and products made with ship--breaking scrap.

Go through all the fifteen pages in this thread and see the videos, you will see my point of view.

So the problem being what it is - what is the Bangladesh govt. doing about it?

Nothing, zero, nada, zilch.

Haramkhor ministers in Hasina's cabinets (some of them Indian agents) are being bribed by India and ensure no or minimal tariffs on Indian imports - the same thing Zinjira makes. How can local industry compete?

These AL ministers support Indian industry, not ours. One of them is commerce minister Tipu Munshi. #1 Indian agent, just like the Tata and Hero Motorcycle Indian agent, Abdul Matlub Ahmed.

If Zinjira people got policy and tariff support - they could supply local needs and employ more people. Build up our industrial capability and even diversify our export basket at some point.
Ok thats some insight, so the difference is the education. Surely the Bangladeshi side lack education and all are on the job trained.

These cottage industries save billions of dollars of import charges. Like any other industry in Bangladesh they have come this far without any help and still going strong. If not the government then big corporates can use this potential we can make big export base without a doubt.

yeah credit goes to attu ur rehman of HEC, atleast per paper citation of bangladesh is quiet good so unlike india its not just accumulating numbers and entering into top club of western european countries+ china/japan/s korea

That is a very pessimistic take on Pakistan's future. Pakistan isn't going bankrupt soon.

It is however going through a rough patch.
The way world economy is going and the fuel price, I am not too sure. I am not praying for pakistan to fail but this situation will test big economies as well, and pakistan is already vulnarable. US is already in recession, other western countries are also following here survival of poorer countries with weak economy will be a challenge. Bangladesh is not out of risk but at a comparably better situation due to its debt is lower, thats why BD can afford more loans in time of extreme situation which pakistan is struggling to secure. Hope everyone comes out of it good.

The reason I propose more trade between both countries is that it could be beneficial to Pakistan.

Bangladesh does almost $50 Billion worth of trade with India every year.

Why can't Pakistan take India's place - will it be harmful to Pakistan?
I do not think BD india trade is $50 billion.

As pak bd produces similar things, not much to trade on. Things Bangladeshi like that are from pakistan are female dresses like lawns, shahiwal cattle is very popular in Bangladesh, heard about pakistani fruits from my mother but do not know what variety they have. Maybe carpets if they have any.

Right now there is minimal trade between both countries, mostly Pakistani cotton goes to Bangladesh.

Pakistani Businessmen can take the first step in enhancing trade further.

There is no measure stick. We are talking about how to enhance trade between both countries... :-)

Pakistan is a lost country. It has zero future. Pakistan is a country where the military calls the shots with the help of the Americans. Such a country doesn't deserve any respite nor credit. BD did well after seeking independence.
Unfortunate truth, pak military was the biggest reason we seperated. Even after Independence Seikh Mujib talked about military interference in all aspects of then pakistan. Nations should be run by politicians not generals. They can run adminstration but cant control politics unfortunately.

I think this is the first time I saw pakistanies talking against Military after Imran Khans issue.

Look at BD economic progress compared to corrupt Pakistan. These are two world's apart. Pakistani economy is on IMF ventilator and things are set to get much worse in the coming years.
I disagree with you here, I see everyone talks about corruption, but BD is doing far worse in corruption than pakistan.

Lately I came to the understanding that this was a propaganda used by military to legitimise their interference in Pakistan politics and then takeover power whenever they wish. Not saying corruption wasnt there.

Just because corruption was there doesnt legitimise army interference, there is judicial system or the opposition can also bring that government down, thats what happens in democracy. But pak army uses it as a tool to have their control over power, economy their own financal / business interest.

Very strange to see these honest pakistani genarals who the awam hold dear, living lives of luxury in Canada, Dubai after retirement. Did all of them win lottery or salary is in multiple millions in a year.

Only a fool would still have faith in Pakistan. Pakistan is only for the military and political rulers. The common man has no future in Pakistan. BD should be happy.

I see signs of change, who knows what future will bring. Debt is haram and that what they have pocket full of, will take a couple of genarations to stay clean then they can come back on track.

B U L L $ H I T....

Count the illegal Indians working in Bangladesh remitting money via Hundi ($10 Billion per annum easily), unofficial smuggling of Indian goods to Bangladesh (everything under the sun), smuggling of Bangladeshi (subsidized) petroleum to India, medical and retail tourism (easily $20 Billion yearly). Real number could exceed $50 Billion per year very easily.

Don't try to hijack the thread - you will be reported.

@Homo Sapiens, @EasyNow bhais am I off too much?
Bhai then mention these when you put figurs like 50 billion, even I was like, doesnt seem right.

Sadly, research in Bangladesh is non existant in Universities, so better not compare in that. All focus on primary and secondary education till recently.
Though may sound sad but think about it, when we got indipendence around 80% were uneducated, should we have used resourses for funding research or take education everywhere first? Now we are about 75% literate from 20%, and can allocate more resources on research in maybe 5 to 10 years when literacy will hit close to 90%

So soon we may not only catchup but exceed our neighbours as we have the Foundation now.

Yes Indians are strangely silent on the topic of how much benefit they are getting from a friendly neighbor like us.

Some of the economies of the border states in the Indian Union would grind to a halt if they could not supply Bangladesh with manufactured products (WB, UP, BIHAR) and raw materials (NE 7 Sisters). Official exports belie the number and quantity of items smuggled to Bangladesh, sometimes with the express help of the BSF, which is a supremely corrupt organization.

If Indians can fix the BSF and that idiot Rajnath - it will fix both smuggling and any terrorism insertion problem that Indians claim. Put any BSF person on court marshal if found taking bribes.

Clinker (raw material for cement production) lumber and other minerals and agri-products are supplied from 7 sisters region.

WB and Kerala receive medical tourism and their hospitals, hotels, restaurants, airports, airlines all benefit.

So do services and retail establishments serving tourists (hotels, restaurants, shops) in Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai. Bangladeshis became top tourists in India by numbers many years ago. Indian HC opened up Visa booths in every major mall in Dhaka - Visa is easier to get than candy.

They would not do this if there was no benefit to Indian govt. and businesses.

Not only does their center not acknowledge this contribution to their economy, but they also bad mouth us as "poorer than India", "unfit economically" etc. etc. which was handily busted last year when we showed them that our nominal per capita GDP was higher than theirs. It was a shock to Sanghis in power and the semi-educated Sanghi trolls in PDF.

On top of it, there is the constant harping about illegal Bangladeshis in India which is pretty much a myth.

It is easy to understand Bangladeshi frustration at Sanghis and even regular Indian people because they act like a bunch of ingrates.

If they continue to do so - and manipulation of Hasina Govt. and cabinet continues, relations are bound to take a turn for the worse.

Indian states bordering Bangladesh are terminally poor - those are the people that are flocking their richer cities for jobs. And these people often have the same culture, dress and food habits as we do. Some Indians have no clue about this.

Sadly, research in Bangladesh is non existant in Universities, so better not compare in that. All focus on primary and secondary education till recently.

For a country like Bangladesh using semi-skilled labor for now (apparel) this does not matter yet. But when we graduate to making more higher ticket value-added products, we will need to have higher-skilled people on tap. So education and skills upgrade (including spending on R&D) is a must. Otherwise we will be stuck at middle income status like Thailand...

Bangladesh extracts hundreds if not thousands of tons of ship scrap plates every week from ships, given it is one of the largest ship breakers and recyclers in South Asia and probably all of Asia.

These ship plates are not mild steel plates - they are heavy duty shipbuilding plates that can be used and upcycled to make tons of informal items, adding local value and import substitution products. Some of these are low precision, low tolerance products like earth mover accessories e.g. excavator buckets.

In this area - Pakistan is supremely self-sufficient. Unlike our situation in Bangladesh.

Here is a compressor tank being made in Pakistan (500 liters 8bar pressure). Granulated flux applied from a hopper on to a wirefeed MiG-like welding process. In Bangladesh we will run to India the first chance we get, if we need something like this.
