Is our success dependent on english ?

It wrenches my heart when I see the geniuses around me unable to continue their struggle to become what they dream of because of their difficulties they face in english .

Trust me, I've seen the students been treated roughly and rudely in my school who can't communicate or study in english cause of their urdu based education . These students, these geniuses who can prove to be a proud to our country are led behind and discouraged because of dominance of English in the country.

Consider two situations:
1. People of this subcontinent are somewhat decent in English specially the educated folks. Best of our students go to study abroad. Majority goes to countries like USA, Canada, UK, Australia. They complete their graduation. By this time they become even better in English. They find good jobs in their host countries. They apply their skills there.
2. People from East Asia, like Japan, China, Korea, Singapore are not that good in English. They learn things in their language. Best of their students used to go and study abroad. Some still do. They struggle with their English. They graduate. Due to their poor English skills they find harder to find good jobs. They return and apply their skill in their own country.

This happens for 50 years. After that you see the difference between countries in situation 1 and 2.

You know they get these benefits in the English speaking nations but here in this country, where urdu is the medium source, urdu is not given the status of economic survival .
There's no wrong or any disadvantage of learning english but giving it preference over your native language is injustice with the people living here .

In my opinion your education and even higher education should be on your national language. You can always translate books into Urdu. English should not be taught before 5th grade like they do in Japan.

In our country , as far as my province comes ... the poor gets educated in urdu as he can't afford fees of private english institutes while rich's education is based on english mediums .
Later , poor is left out and gets low salary jobs . rich or middle class that can afford english gets good jobs .

I might be generalising but this is what I note in my province .

Rich people always prefer English medium. That's in BD too. However vast majority of the students like 95% study in Bangali medium. I myself studies in Bengali medium. However Universities teaches in English.

But usage of English in our educational system is making things difficult for some students . Not all students can work well in english and not everyone can make up their mind to understand those new words of this language.
In our country, there are many people who have very high iq and have got a very sound mind still cannot go ahead in education if they don't have a complete grasp on english or regard education as difficult cause of new language.
Your native language affects your brain development. Western nations have the benefit that they use english in their daily life also then carry studying in the same language and also rule the world with this same language.
While it's not case with us, our mind is developed in urdu , study in Same language but then told that it's important to learn English to move ahead or to become a successful person in this earth like the famous people. In order to get a job , you need to have grasp in english that is just a injustice to those who don't know english.


Seems like your iq is not any benefit to you unless you learn English . It should be limited to a language of interaction and should not be given the state of dependency on it .

No you're success is not dependent on knowing English. At the same time: Yes it is.

Allow me to explain. There are three reasons there is so much emphasis on English;

1. It is the language used to communicate internationally. There is not a country in the world where you will go and not find someone who speaks English.

2. We have a three/four tier education system. We have the madrasa system, we have the state schools, we have poor quality private schools and we have high quality private schools. In the high tier private schools the international equivalent of GCSE's and A levels are taught in English. These qualifications hold higher recognition (unfortunately) than our domestic education system equivalents. It is a reflection of the quality of resources available to educate children with, rather than the quality of the education they recieve. Everyone else is then trying to compete with that privileged set of society.

3. Nearly all higher education in Pakistan is taught in English, particularly STEM subjects. You could have a great education in Urdu but if you're university teaches in English you will struggle.

If people want to be successful they are forced to learn English. I think this is a great disservice to the children of Pakistan.

I think;
- All primary education should be done in urdu and the childrens mother tongue. It's more important children understand a subject rather than their ability to express their understanding in Urdu alone.
- At secondary level all education should be done in Urdu and the mother tongue only used to re-affirm understanding. The aim should be that by the time the children are at the age of 14-15, they should be fluent in communicating all subjects in Urdu.
- Tertiary education should be in Urdu too. In order to faciliatate this we need massive work to ensure all educational resources/text books/research papers etc that are relevant to the field are translated into Urdu. This is something the academic community should be doing and it should be supported by the state.
- I think english should be taught as a subject right from primary all the way through the first two tiers of education. It is inevitable that by university level and post graduate level the best research material etc will be initially always available in english. I support the need to translate it all into Urdu (to make it accessible) but we need to make sure our academics are not held back waiting for translations to come out before they can study something. Also in the world of science and technology international collaboration is a routine thing, and our workforce not only need to be highly skilled but also be able to communicate with other people - for the forseeable future English is the mechanism for that.

How much scientific and technical knowledge is there in local languages..... It's zero... You have to learn foreign language if you don't want to invent the wheel again. English is one of those foreign languages which can give you access to the knowledge necessary to survive in scientific age, other languages can be German, French, Russian, Japanese, Chinese even Persian. None of South Asian language can help you in this.

In Iran do you learn Science in English or does someone translate scientific concepts into Farsi? For thousands of years civilisations have found books in foreign languages, translated them and then absorbed the knowledge. Our fault as a society is that we don't do that well enough.

English is very useful when you have multi-lingual nation and everybody holds their linguistic origin as an identity there by opposing any other language (From the country). A neutral language can bridge the gap.

English is very useful if you want to communicate (say a colleague who don't understand you). Although I disagree about the intelligence part. After my graduation, during the interview I was stuttering with English, all though I could manage the technical terms I couldn't connect the dots which require good proficiency in English. Seeing my difficulty, the board members asked to talk in my own language. So, I must say English didn't help me to secure a job. My own ability to communicate did.

Now that, it has become part of my life, although my vocabulary never improved, I manage to have a proper conversation (without stuttering) when I'm out of my country.

Are non Iranian scientific papers available to you in farsi? I suspect they are. This is what we also need to do. I don't think we can or should abandon English, your and my conversation is only faciliated because we both know the language, but I think we need to do lots more translating and educating in our own language.

You can't give an urdu word for Induction Motor.
That may not be the case. I'm sure Urdu has a word for it. Bengali has, I know. Induction is Anayon. আনয়ন-written in Bengali. Motor is motor but written in Bengali Alphabets - মটর।

Urdu me induction motor ko induction motor kehte hain mallu
lekin inkeliye koyi anye sabd nahi hein. Spanish for example uses, grupo electrogeno for generator. They may not know, it's generator in English. Make your own versions if you can't stand gora language like the spanish did.
