Iraqi Kurdistan President’s son sues magazine for Dh100m

Qatari publication claimed he lost Dh11.5m in one night of gambling in Dubai

The son of the President of Iraqi Kurdistan is seeking Dh100 million in compensation in a lawsuit lodged against a magazine that falsely reported he lost Dh11.5 million in one night gambling in Dubai.

President Masoud Barzani’s son, Mansour, lodged his civil lawsuit against the Qatar-based magazine and its editor-in-chief (EIC) for tarnishing his and his father’s image in what was described as ‘false and fabricated news’. The Dubai Appeal Court has asked the claimant (Mansour Barzani) to legally notify the defendants (the magazine and its EIC) about the civil lawsuit lodged against them to attend the next hearing in June.

The Qatari magazine published a report claiming that Mansour had lost Dh11.5 million while gambling in a casino in Dubai in 2012, although he had been advised to stop.

The report claimed that President Barzani stopped his negotiations in Erbil and came on a surprise visit to Dubai to resolve the issue.

“Many international newswires, newspapers, magazines and media outlets picked up the magazine’s report and republished it. The gambling news is baseless and wrong. Gambling in the UAE is banned and an act punishable by law. The President of Iraqi Kurdistan visited the UAE upon an official invite from one of the Abu Dhabi shaikhs. Despite continuous efforts to convince the magazine and its EIC to publish a retraction and correction this did not happen. The fabricated news defamed the claimant and libelled President Barzani before his political rivals in Kurdistan,” according to the lawsuit.

The claimant mentioned in the lawsuit the magazine did not publish a factual article, but on the contrary, it published an article based on lies and fabrication.

More than ten Iraqi and non-Iraqi media outlets republished the false news and the magazine’s EIC did not respond to the claimant’s request to publish a retraction and correction, according to the lawsuit.

The president’s son is seeking to obtain a ruling that orders the defendants to publish a correction and in the case of a refusal to publish the correct news in three newspapers. The claimant has also requested Dh100 million in compensation for the damage inflicted on him, his father and the Barzani family.

The Dubai Civil Court had earlier dismissed the lawsuit because the documents provided by the claimant were not substantiated enough to corroborate his claims.

The claimant appealed the verdict before the Appeal Court that requested him to legally notify the defendants in Qatar that they should stand trial.
