and you indian guys, there was something else in the past about parsis in india: The Persian language, before the British colonized India, was the country's second official language (in Gorkanid official language) and was considered the language of culture and science. However, after colonization by the British, it was replaced with English :undecided:

Parsis use Avestan language in Gujarati script and the most of them speak Gujarati language. The modern Persian is not used by them.

agreed..........
I think Iranians are culturally quite close to Indians and thats why the Parsi's didn't face much problems to live together with the Indians. We have almost the same temper and are quite spirituality.

Hi,

The title is misleading-----the ones you are talking about---a small minority are actually they are parsis----zoroastrians. Iranians are in india and pakistan in different caste groups---one of the most prominent is Kamboh or Kamboja and they and their sub castes are in quite a large numbers---

Those people have completely mixed in with the local population.

i need to say something to the Surenas :
you even don't believe in god so you just don't have the quality to talk about islam , Zoroastrianism , christian or etc... the thread is about something else!

The Mughalized were Persianized Turkic Mongols. They spoke a Turkic language in the beginning, but they switched to Persian. So it was then spoken by people high up in the ladder.

John Abraham a Parsi ?

The guy is half mallu / half parsi and a Syrian christian ( a Syrian christian does not mean Syrian roots ) . Its just what they call themselves.

Its better to call them persian may be, they have little common with today's iranians.

I agree. There are Iranians in India but they are Muslim Iranians from the modern state of Iran.

The Parsis (it was actually the 7th century) who came and landed off the coast of Gujarat were never Irani or Iranian. When they left their land, it was Zoroastrian Persia. As it had always been for millenia.

The later "Iranis" who came around 300 years ago, also Zoroastrians, but those who had stayed on as Zoroastrian Persia became Islamic Iran, are the ones who can actually be called "Iranian" minority in the true sense of the word. Culturally they are slightly different, as well as language, though Irani Zoroastrians and Parsi Zoroastrians do intermarry.

So it would be appreciated if the OP edits the topic to refer to the community as Indians of Persian origin, if his intent is to highlight the Parsi community.

Because they were never Iranian.

To the best of my knowledge, Syrian Christian means Syrian roots. They migrated a thousand years back to India.

It's not I am one.

Those people that came 100s to 1000s of years ago are mixed into the local population. You can't tell the difference.

They have probably never been more than 0.5% of India's population yet have managed to leave such a mark on India and Indian society. It takes massive amount of talent to achieve something like that with such a small population .I really hope they start having more kids and continue to contribute to Indian society . We need them particularly now when this country is desperately trying to grow fast .

Well you always have the Jains to give them competition to the 'Model minority' post.

But then most dont consider Jains as minorites as they are intermingled to an extent that differentiation becomes difficult.

BYW why do some Parsis have occupations as their surnames - [Nari] contractor, [Farokkh] engineer, [Vijay] merchant etc..?
