Beside rebuilding Damavand, could they finally figure out why Damavand-1 failed, and more importantly how to prevent it from happening again for Damavand-2? Did they buy any big crane this time?
They can build 10 more Damavands there, but all of them will be still at the same risk of collapse as for the first Damavand, as long as the root cause of that accident has not been identified, addressed, and fixed!!

Lol it failed because it smashed against a bunch of rocks in a storm.

D-1 single engine quit while approaching the docking area in a storm...The fate of any ship will be sealed when this happens ..so the NO 1 cause was having single engine with no engine back up ...D-2 has four engines...one quits you still can maneuver the ship out of the danger in a storm..NO 2 cause was bad decision by the Captain to try docking in a storm in a new ship with unknown reliability issues and probably inexperienced crew. I was not there and I recall these from scattered reports .

laying mines creates a death trap for the americans...

if the straight of hormuz is mined, the US has to spend enormous resources and take extreme risks to try and clear them.

they have to take their rickety minesweeper, plus their escorts and park them in a tiny predictable spot. possibly for weeks while constantly taking AShm fire from Iran….

even the most optimistic American commander dreads this possible scenario. as you cannot create a worse tactical situation for the US navy if you tried.
The difference is that mines are indiscriminate weapons thus can equally end up damaging friendly commercial ships, whereas ASBM/ASCMs can target specific hostile ships.

if a hot war breaks out. no civilian ship would be going thru there. that's the whole point. while it will hurt Iran somewhat, it will absolutely cripple the Persian gulf arabs, the world economy, and American military reputation.

mines and Anti-ship missiles complement each other perfectly in that environment

Indiscriminate mining would be the perfect way to turn the world against Iran. Chinese, Russian, Swiss etc ships all go through the Strait of Hormuz, you want to destroy their ships too?

In my opinion this is something best discussed as a deterrent to war (closing the Strait and especially via such means), but something you hope you never have to implement.

But my opinion is irrelevant and I am sure Iranian military planners know much better than me what they should do.

Do you know what “root cause” means? What you said is not the root cause, neither what aryobarzan said. What you mentioned is the consequence and what he mentioned is the effect. The question is what caused the engine to stop functioning? Was it the control system? Sabotage? Lack of training? Poor PM program? Power/fuel supply issue? Depending on type of the root cause it can or cannot be independent of number of engines! Also, they said there was no big enough crane or something like that to move the the stuck ship before she collapsed after few days. Now if similar thing happens again, they can relocate the body of the ship before it collapses?

Why laying mines if there are lots of AShM on the table?
Just think about the headache it produce also a single Ashm won't sink a destroyer but a mine can blew it out of water for good.

It had something to do with propulsion design it had no reduency . it seems the problem with damavand was its shaft or gearbox design that was fixed in Sahand.

Me like to see some kind of EMP-missiles or other electronic warfare which just switch off the US ships. I would lol so much :yay:
