Iran’s Aseman Airlines and Iran Air Tours have signed agreements to purchase 40 Sukhoi SuperJets from Russia.

Iran says two of its leading airlines have purchased a collective of 40 Sukhoi SuperJet 100 planes from Russia thus ending speculations over a purchase scheme that had been in the offing for the past few years.

The purchases were made by Aseman Airlines and Iran Air Tours and the related documents were signed on the sidelines of Eurasia Airshow 2018 in Turkey’s Anatolia.

According to a report by IRNA news agency, the planes that Aseman Airlines purchased belonged to RRJ-95R class of Sukhoi’s latest model of SuperJets.

IRNA also quoted an Iran Air Tours official as saying that the total value of the company’s purchases of Sukhoi planes stood at $1 billion.

Marziyeh Jafarzadeh, the director of the Iran Air Tours’ Public Relations Department, said the deliveries of the planes would start within a year, adding that each plane would add 100 seats to the company’s passenger capacity.

Sukhoi was reported last February to be close to a deal to sell its SuperJets to Iran and had thus started technical talks to obtain the required authorizations from the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

Prior to this, Hossein Alaei, the head of Iran’s Aseman Airlines, had said that his company was negotiating with Sukhoi as well as several other leading global plane makers to renovate its fleet.

Alaei added that Sukhoi had carried out trial flights of its Superjet 100 in Tehran in December 2016 – what he said had been carried out at the invitation of Aseman Airlines.

Iran’s biggest plane shopper is Iran Air which has already sealed deals with global aviations giants such as Boeing and Airbus to purchase above 100 new planes. It has already received several planes from Airbus, but deliveries by Boeing are yet to start.

Wonder how do Russian airliners stack up against Boeing and Airbus...:coffee:

Very poor safety track record...
Yeah its basically the safety and reliability that I'm concerned with.

Have flown on SSJ's a few times within the ME region. Hardly any difference to flying in a baseline 737. Just as good.
how good are the Russian airliners' safety and reliability? Boeing and Airbus are insanely reliable...

Actually is a well designed craft, they had issues with the tail stabs but I believe it's all been resolved. This is a modern Jetliner that can go toe to toe with Airbus and Embraer, but the gold standard will always be B737. Also this plane is cheap....35 million!

hopefully they worked out the kinks. but the problem with maintaining eastern aircraft must be overcome for this to work.

irans entire civilian fleet has always been western. with western oriented maintenance facilities. its a logistical nightmare for an airline to have to service both eastern and western aircraft. Which is why Russian planes have always had a really poor track record in iran (even worse then elsewhere)

Iran buying this plane would be a major boost for Russian aviation. it gives a lifeline to a struggling jet that they hope will propel their civilian airline industry forward. Besides some Russian and a handful of small no-name airlines nobody has so far bought these unproven planes.

also these planes have a lot of western tech inside them as well, so there could be further issues later on down the road.

iran should be receiving other concessions in return for this. they should be demanding military (su-30) tot or something in return.

I think something like this may be in the cards. iran and Russia are drawing closer. iran wants to join russias economic union. and Russia has openly said their romance and stance towards the west is over. in addition to an oil for goods agreement being signed.

it would be incompetence to the point of betrayal if the Iranian government couldn't leverage all this into getting some much needed fighter jets from Russia.

If it's good for our country and it's a smart thing to do, then it's treasonous.

Is this a treason or not?
Certainly treason if they were not traitor they would have pre ordered Sukhoi Superjet 130 or Irkut MC21 both of them would have been delivered in 2020 and I doubt recovering the planes 6 month sooner was good motive to go for older aircraft.

The airplane maintenance would be problem but not for the reason you said ,only God now how much of that airplane is Russian, the rest is western parts.
The problem is that our airline each gonna have at least 10-20 different airplane from different manufacturer. Who is going to provide the facility for maintaining all of them going to have serious problem

althuogh deal have is own impact not to relying on west still i think Boeing airbus are more safe and secure to fly
