Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan says Tehran is in talks with Moscow for the purchase of Russian-made Sukhoi fighter jets.

“We are discussing the purchase of Sukhoi fighter planes” from Russia, Dehqan said in an interview withLebanon-based Arabic-language al-Mayadeen news networkon Sunday.

Earlier this week, Tehran and Moscow held negotiations about the Russian-made Sukhoi 30 fighter jets, a twin-engine, two-seat supermaneuverable fighter aircraft.

The talks were held on Tuesday on the sidelines of the MAKS 2015 air show in the town of Zhukovsky near Moscow during which Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian Vice President for Science and Technology Affairs Sorena Sattari were present, Fars News Agency reported.

In response to a question about the purchase of Russia's Sukhoi 30, Sattari said, "We spoke about it but we didn’t discuss purchasing them and talks were mostly focused on the technological issues."

Elsewhere in the interview, the Iranian defense minister said Russia has agreed to start delivering of S-300 surface-to-air missile defense system to Iran by the end of the current year.

Moscow had banned the delivery of the missile defense system to Tehran in 2010 under the pretext that the agreement it signed with Iran in 2007 was subject to the fourth round of the UN Security Council sanctions against the country over its nuclear program.

On April 13, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree paving the way for the long-overdue delivery of the defense system to Iran after Tehran and six world powers reached a mutual understanding on Tehran’s nuclear program in the Swiss city of Lausanne on April 2.

Dehqan further pointed to the recent nuclear agreement between Iran and the P5+1 countries, saying Iran will honor its obligations.

But, he warned, "If the opposite party reneges on its commitments, we will respond firmly.”

On July 14, Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, Britain, France, China, Russia – and Germany finalized the text of the nuclear agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in Vienna.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all economic and financial bans against the Islamic Republic

PressTV-Iran says in Sukhoi fighter talks with Russia

Dangerous development. Iran is inching close to our arch rival and is getting hostile towards us. We should take a look at our inventory and explore new options.

There were report six several yeras back Iran is go in VIP for buy 250 su-30 and 8 refueler aircraft from Russia. But now it seems it is likely they are going for the beast one of the best in the market. I hope they go for the su-35

Who told you that? They are not purchasing Indian fighter jet and not getting hostile either. If you are under a mask of flag, you got to be more careful as stupidity would be hard to hide again.

Try to understand the context and read it slowly this time.

Su-30 or 35 can be stop-gap measure for a few years but as a long term investment to form the core of the AF, they are pretty much useless since 5th generation aircrafts will be all around Iran by the next decade. Countries like Turkey, UAE, Israel and Saudi are in all probability going to purchase F-35. While Russia will have PAK FA and Pakistan will have some Chinese 5th gen fighters and India will have some variant of PAK FA.

Iran should also join a 5th generation project like PAK FA or J31 or both in a ToT arrangement similar to India's FGFA with Iran producing at least some of the components and assembly inside Iran.

The era of 4th generation fighters is about to end. Buying 4th generation fighters now specially in large numbers is stupidity and an economic mistake. It would be like a country buying 3rd generation fighters in 1990's.

It would be great if Iran could buy the Su-35
But regardless of the fighter Iran should make sure it is a variant compatible with Iranian made weapons

Stealth aircraft have their disadvantages too. 5th Gen stealth aircraft are overrated, many 4.5 Gen aircraft has equal electronics and superior specs falling behind only in stealth.
Iran should buy a Stealth fighter but there are no fighter available so far, they will have to wait until the export version of PAK FA comes

Why buying from someone else when you have such high end defence technologies ? During sanctions you use to produce a new weapon fortnightly. From my pov Iran should make its own fifth generation aircraft as buying from some other countries will drag Iranian innovations back to burner.

Actually Iran's ambition should not be to buy export versions at all. Iran's ambition should be to become an investor and a partner in the DEVELOPMENT of systems. It means investment in 5th generation now. There will be no ToT once the development has been completed. Since the country owning the project will have no need for a partner in ToT, and will only agree to sell export versions.

This is exactly the right time for Iran to get into PAK FA or J31 as a development partner and not as a mere final product purchaser.

It is too late on the PAK FA but Iran can get there own version suited for their needs like India did with the Su-30MKI
As I said regardless of the fighter Iran should make sure it is compatible with their weapons

Iran and Russia were developing a Stealth aircraft before sanctions so they can restart it or even start a new project with tech based on PAK FA

It's a nice development for Iranian Air Force modernization. I think Iran should get a customized/upgraded version like
our Su-30MKI in considerable numbers. Maybe they can even train with IAF which operates huge fleet of Flankers
and can help IRIAF get acquainted with the model sooner, just like how we support the Su-30 fleets of Malaysia and
Vietnam.

The MRO facilities present in India for the Flanker type can help maintain Iran's fleet of Sukhois without having to go all the way to Russia.

But I think Iran should think of setting up MRO facilities of it's own for the Flanker - however this will only be feasible
if enough numbers are bought.
