Iran repels US U2 reconnaissance plane

A senior Iranian commander says the country identified and repelled an American U2 reconnaissance plane that was trying to intrude into Iranian airspace above the Sea of Oman.


Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili said on Tuesday that the country’s air defense systems identified the radar-evading plane on 10.feb.2013 but it left the area after receiving a warning from Iran’s air-defense units.

“The US U2 plane was flying from Pakistan’s southwest to the east of the Sea of Oman and was being monitored by our radar and electronic surveillance systems every moment,” the Iranian commander said, adding that Iran’s Persian Gulf radar gave it a warning when it got close to iran's airspace above the Sea of Oman and southeast of the Strait of Hormuz.
he added today they are receding this type of aircraft's fly zone from our borders.

why waste fuel when a signal would do the job, when they realize their multi million$ aircraft is detected by our radars, escape is their first choice.

First of all nowhere it says that plane was in Pakistan's air space, second US use Pakistan's air corridor for Afghanistan. What's your point other than usual Indian troll attempt?

U2 cannot take off from an AC carrier.It has to cross Pakistani airspace even if it flew from Afghanistan.

Did you check your class 5 geography before you came onto this?
Afghan-Iran have direct borders.

Iran borders Afghanistan in N-E.This plane was detected near Sea of Oman.So unless you are saying that plane was enjoying picnic over Iranian airspace with IRAF playing a gracious host,it is impossible that the plane would have traversed whole length of Iran without being detected and with Iranian radars detecting it only after it is outside their airspace.(Additional information: U2 is not a stealth plane).

So practically either it flew through pakistan or from a pakistani airbase.

This is the tall statement as for as Pakistani angle is concerned, nothing has been given to known abt Pakistanis giving nod to US over such a operation, perticularly when They (Iran-Pak) are going hand in hand in the Pipeline build up and the US working as a democles sword over Pakistan for violating sanctions charter.

You forgot that US Navy has a base in Bahrain!
Saner minds wont buy Pakistani involvement into this.

Search for any airbase if it has an expeditionary squadron from Beale AFB. Most likely (just my guess) it's from Kandahar. The RQ-170 is there. So does it means the U-2 is there? I don't know, but the RQ has been spotted where the TR-1 home base (beale).
