TEHERAN • Iran's on-off space programme has received a boost after a recent satellite launch was seen to annoy Washington, with Teheran dusting off plans for a manned mission, perhaps with Moscow's assistance.

"Ten skilled pilots are currently undergoing difficult and intensive training so that two of them... can be selected for the space launch," the head of the science ministry's aerospace research centre, Mr Fathollah Omi, told the state broadcaster last week.

He said the plan was to put humans into suborbital space "in less than eight years".

"In preliminary talks with Russia's main space company, we have agreed to cooperate on this important project and we are waiting for their definitive answer," he added.

Russia has not confirmed the talks, although Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees its space programme, visited Teheran two years ago to discuss potential collaboration.

The Islamic Republic's scientists are also celebrating the fact that two monkeys they launched into space in 2013 have recently given birth to their first baby.

"Aftab and Fargam were two monkeys sent separately into space and returned alive. Researchers are studying the effect of a space trip on their baby," said Mr Omi.

SKY'S THE LIMIT

The Islamic Republic reacts very negatively when it feels it is being held back... Its leaders like to literally show that the sky is the limit to Iran's technological progress.

MR ADNAN TABATABAI, an Iran analyst and CEO of Germany's Carpo think-tank.

Iran's space programme has progressed in fits and starts.

It has sent a turtle, a mouse and worms into space and, after the successful voyage by the monkeys, then-President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that he would like to be the first to go up on an Iranian rocket. But he was out of office a few months later, and the whole programme appeared to have been mothballed earlier this year due to financial constraints.

"It was estimated that putting a man into Earth orbit would cost around US$15 billion to US$20 billion (S$20 billion to S$27 billion) over 15 years. As a result, the budget cannot be allocated for this project," the deputy head of Iran's Space Organisation, Mr Mohammad Homayoun Sadr, said in May. That decision appears to have been reversed in the wake of the international furore over Iran's testing of a new satellite launch rocket in July.

The 500km-range rocket - named Simorgh after a bird from Persian legend and with the words "We can do it" inscribed on the side - was launched from the newly inaugurated Imam Khomeini Space Centre in Semnan province.

The United States in particular baulks at any technological advance that might also benefit Iran's ballistic missile programme, and Washington quickly threatened fresh sanctions.

Mr Omi confirmed the plans for human spaceflights, as well as a new 1,000km-range satellite- rocket that had followed the "great reaction from the world" to the Simorgh test.

"The Islamic Republic reacts very negatively when it feels it is being held back," said Mr Adnan Tabatabai, an Iran analyst and CEO of Germany's Carpo think-tank.

"Iran's nuclear programme and particularly its research and development became all the more prestigious and important the more that Iran was under pressure by the West to halt it," he said. Iran's four launches of domestically produced satellites since 2009 have all sparked condemnation from the West.

The new Communications Minister, Mr Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, said on Wednesday that a new satellite, named Doosti, was waiting to be launched.

"Its leaders like to literally show that the sky is the limit to Iran's technological progress," said Mr Tabatabai.

I heard that Iran is about to send an astronaut to space before 2030, but as the news goes, Iran and Russia are working together to create a behind-the-scenes deal. 10 experienced pilots from Iran go to training and 2 will be selected.

A suborbital in 8 years!!,why wait that long for gods sake!?,iran could easily do a suborbital flight right now using the simorgh.Hopefully in 8 years iran will have a booster capable of putting a 1 or 2 man craft into orbit.Hopefully tho in the short term they will stop fu#king around and start to launch that backlog of satellites into orbit where they belong instead of leaving them to gather dust and slowly rot away on the ground.

Iran can do it, but the president pushed back a four-year plan to hold the nuclear deal, which even the commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps said that we built good missiles for the space agency, but they left them in the warehouse.

Iran cant do it right now and i think president in Iran dont have such power to hold the missile test

Rocket testing was carried out in 2011 (Simorgh rocket) and missile delivered to Iran's space agency, but the president did not allow rocket launches.

another useless claim from another useless IRI official ...

we planned this program 10 years ago ,,, the actual result was cutting budget and stopping space program by so called reformist government ...

i think if they cut the budget its smart move when iran be able to make a god car then it can send human to space

we can but when our government and its company are able to sell old models ( 1980s ) with the same price as modern cars (2017) , then why they should bother to make good cars for people !?
if majority of people live a normal life ( by global standard ) instead of living like stary dogs , then they will begin to question our government decisions ...

Probably low funding.

Iran already has the rocket. The simorgh is fully capable of launching a man in a capsule to suborbital space. But it needs to be tested a LOT, and Iran needs to go into completely new technologies for a manned mission, like man rated space capsules, as well as space suits (for which it has absolutely no experience).

I presume the supposed cooperation with Russia will be in the context of space suits and manned capsules.

Is that necessary to put a man into space right now? I am not against it but due to low funding we should focus on other things like satellites ....

In the vision document, they say they should do it by 1404

That's the point. Why does Iran need a manned space mission in the first place? It's just about prestige, nothing more. Look at Germany, France, UK - none of these countries are doing such an expansive program on its own and even though they're much, much richer in every aspect than Iran.

So, you're right. Iran should invest its precious resources in satellite tech or missiles, just anything that improves the defence capacities of the country right now or in the foreseeable future.

There is, of course, another option: finding a partner to share the costs. Pakistan is actually an ideal partner but we all know it's not going to happen due to the influence GCC countries have on Islamabad.

It's a another proof for the sad state of the Islamic world that countries like Turkey, Iran and Pakistan either don't want or simply aren't allowed by foreign powers to work together.

After cancellation of manned mission they did not increase the other sectors budget !!!

It was a political decision after JCPOA !

They don't need a lot of money to send a human into a suborbital trajectory ...

It's all political ...

Reformist government trusted Americans and received a middle finger so they are trying to hide their stupid decisions with that !

Really !!!
