Iran has launched a mass production of 105-mm and 125-mm hypersonic kinetic anti-tank shells Sahib, Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi was quoted by the Mehr news agency as saying. Their speed fivefold exceeds the speed of sound, he added.

Vahidi said the new generation of shells is able to penetrate the multi-layer armor tanks, enter into it for half a meter and blast.


The damaging effect of these armor-piercing shells is based on the reserve of kinetic energy, which has a heavy core mounted in the bow of the anti-tank missiles.

Wow! That's damn good going!! This antitank round must have a ramjet propulsion system to achieve that speed. But that means its a missile! Because how can a gun propel an anti tank round with such initial velocity? The mind boggling internal pressures required to be generated would blow the gun to pieces!!

Here's what I'm gathering from the pictures...

We have a workshop with some manually operated lathes, shop presses, welders, turret lathes, and the like. Some skilled craftsmen are producing, by hand, some sabot rounds for their tanks. The rocket-shaped thing looks to be a tungsten penetrator, and is probably NOT an actual rocket... it's more like a dart.

The sabot round weighs much, much less than a normal tank round, so the same charge takes the velocity waaaaay up. The kill mechanism is pure kinetic energy. The round penetrates the armor, and the heat of this vaporizes it and you get spall on the inside of the tank. Tiny shards of tank armor are ejected on the inside to kill those inside.

All of this is nothing new, and the fact that these are being made by hand tells me that there was probably an order for some test rounds. If successful, they'd need to produce these on an industrial scale, which cannot be done in that facility as pictured.

Iran has made some impressive technological strides despite sanctions. They have placed a satellite in orbit. I think Iran has a lot of potential for growth. Let's hope that everything remains peaceful w/regards to Iran, and may the people of Iran be freed from their current regime, if that is their wish. Hopefully, the democratic process will work, but I have my doubts. Most believe that the last election was rigged, and the Green movement was harshly suppressed.
