Iran It's Self completes Mig-29 refurbishment

Iran has successfully renovated one of its "strategic" Mig-29 fighter jets in order to join the country's fighters fleet, an air force commander says.

The refurbishment of the fighter jet was carried out at a military airbase in the northwestern city of Tabriz where the aircraft successfully took off after being grounded for years.

"All the stages of the fighter's repair and modernization program were conducted by Iranian engineers," IRIB reported Iranian Air Force commander Brigadier General Hassan Shah-Safi as saying on Thursday.

Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) also noted that the country has, over the past years, made extensive efforts to build the essential spare parts to upgrade the IRIAF fleet and optimize its performance.

Iran also geared up for the maiden flight of its pilotless trainer aircrafts on June 1 at the re-launching ceremony of the renovated Mig-29.

Refurbishment: It is important to understand what kind of refurbishment was done to make the Migs air worthy. It is unlikely that avionics or any structural element may be modified or enhanced by the Iranians. They may be in breach of contract to the Russians if indeed they have completed a major upgrade.

Russians surely would have supplied them with the kits. If this is a major upgrade, either they would have been notified for payment or some other sort of deal would have been done. You cannot simply do that without nothing in an international deal.

And by the way, Chinese don't wield MiG-29 fighters to know anything about them.

False. Iran has produced it's own versions/ production copies of pre-revolution American helicopters as well as aircraft and all this too without agreement or indirect approval of the United States. Similarly, the same are overhauled within Iran to keep them airworthy and without the supply of foreign expertise nor equipment. This is but one example though. So, this isn't even a new precedent for Iran.

As to the supply of Russian kits. I highly doubt it. This particular aircraft was grounded for the past 9 years, the earlier three of which Iran enjoyed better relations with the Russian federation, and given the large amount in hours spent to overhaul the single aircraft, it leads to the conclusion that the overhaul utilized indigenous abilities only. The last transaction with the Russian federation concerning Iranian MiG-29s was the acquisition of three engines.

The first MiG-29 fighter was repaired By Iranian experts and successfully flew in Tabriz.

All of the stages of this heavy overhaul was completed by the experts of the Tabriz Second Airbase. The Mig in question was grounded for the last nine years. The jet was repaired by experts in 18 different specialty fields and 14000 hours of repairs was carried out.

سرتیپ شاه صفی افزود: کارکنان متعهد نیروی هوایی ارتش جمهوری اسلامی در سراسر کشور هم اکنون در این زمینه رقابتی سازنده دارند و دیگر هواپیمای زمین گیر در یگانها نداریم.

وی با اشاره به آمادگی کامل نیروی هوائی برای دفاع از آسمان کشورمان گفت: نهضت قطعه سازی و ارتقا و بهینه سازی انواع هواپیما اکنون و با جدیت هر چه تمام در این نیرو پیگیری می شود.

سرتیپ حلت آبادی، فرمانده پایگاه دوم شکاری تبریز هم گفت: این جنگنده، با بهره گیری از دانش و تجربه متخصصان 18 رشته مرتبط و صرف 14 هزار ساعت کار، بازسازی و آماده پرواز شده است.

همزمان با پرواز این هواپیما نخستین گردان تاکتیکی هواپیماهای آموزشی بدون سرنشین نیز در پایگاه دوم شکاری تبریز آماده فعالیت شد.

I think if russian-iran relations are going well iran should get russia's help to modernize these fairly old mig-29s.

Why do some people underestimate Iran ? Iran is much more capable that you think. Nobody has dared to attack Iran and some are just making empty threats. Iran has put satellite in space while Pakistani scientists have been working on it for decades.

I think if russian-iran relations are going well iran should get russia's help to modernize these fairly old mig-29s.

Sir the sanctions which Iran is facing now we had been facing those in 90s dont you think keeping our pilots trained and F-16s air worthy was an achievement. So give them credit they have made it air worthy after years of grounding.

Iran also claimed that they made Tofan helos (Cobras) to me if they greased and painted them by putting spares from black market even then please appriciate their effort and commitment.
