Iran said on Saturday it fully supported the government of neighboring Turkey against an attempted military coup launched on Friday night, despite Tehran and Ankara's differences over Syria and other issues.
The senior aide to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that Tehran backed Turkey's elected government against the coup but it expected Ankara to do the same when it came to Syria.
Iran, a Shi'ite Muslim nation, is a main ally of President Bashar al-Assad in Syria's civil war while Sunni-majority Turkey has been one of his fiercest critics and has supported his opponents.

"We disagree with Turkey on some issues, like Syria. We are hopeful that the Turkish government respects the Syrian people's opinion and votes and lets the Syrian nation choose their government," Ali Akbar Velayati was quoted as saying by the Tasnim news agency.

President Hassan Rouhani chaired a meeting of Iran's National Security Council on Saturday to discuss the latest developments in Turkey.
"We support Turkey's legal government and oppose any type of coup - either initiated domestically or supported by foreigners," National Security Council secretary Ali Shamkhani said after the meeting, quoted by state news agency IRNA.
Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has spoken three times on the telephone with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, Iranian news agencies said.
Zarif said in a tweet he was "deeply concerned about the crisis in Turkey. Stability, democracy and safety of Turkish people are paramount".

He later praised Erdogan supporters who took to the streets to oppose the military move.
"Turkish people's brave defense of democracy and their elected government proves that coups have no place in our region and are doomed to fail," he said.
(This story corrects to remove reference to phone call between Turkish and Iranian presidents, quoted by Tasnim news agency, as call took place on July 5, not following coup attempt)

As far as I know Iran was the first country supported Turkish Gov. and condemned military coup while all signs were indicating that Erdogan had a zero chance to stay in power and coup was successful .... interesting point is some Turkish allies in the region who are in the same league with Turkey in Syria waited at least 15 hours to support Turkish Gov. (when it became clear that coup failed) and their news networks were cheering up for conductors of the coup.

.
One could say it was a wasted opportunity but then would the coup have replaced erdogan with something better or just replaced him with something equally as bad, still I`ve no doubt he`ll use this as an excuse to further tighten his stranglehold on power

. . .
well, I don't like Erdogan and current government at all. yet, I'm sure his coup replacement would be worse.
Too bad for Americans and Arab dictators.

The enemies of turkey have played their cards very well and have successfully destabilised the most power and stable country of Muslim world.

Turkey needs to handle its problems related to Syria, Isis and Kurds.

Nah, as long as we have nukes and airbases, not so bad.

What wasted opportunity, what happened in turkey is exact definition of opportunity . its a great opportunity to show some military people that having gun is no white card to use it. Its time to made some people understand that coup is an outdated solution

Ordinarily I`d probably be inclined to agree with you but in the case of Erdogan I would have been more than happy to see him removed even using those somewhat unsavory means ,Erdogan is nothing but bad news both for turkey and the region as a whole,as far as I`m concerned anyone who aids and supports groups like isis in syria has no business being alive let alone president of a country like turkey. The only real problem I would have had with removing him this way is what would have replaced him, something just as repugnant or perhaps even worse?

I think he was coming back to his senses just before this incident. He was trying to mend ties with Russia and even there were talks of trying to restore ties with Syria. So maybe we see a totally different policy from Turkey which is more in line with those of Iran and Russia.

گولان تفکرات ضد ایرانی شدیدی دارد .... هر چه که برایند کودتا باشه تا الان حداقل این است که گولانی ها در ترکیه به حاشیه رفتند ..

We can only hope so as the neo-ottomanist policies that were pursued under his leadership have been nothing but a disaster for turkey and its relations with the region as a whole.
