Tasnim News Agency - Iran, China, US Likely to Cooperate on Arak Heavy Water Reactor: Rouhani

August 29, 2015 - 19:13

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani announced on Saturday that the country will improve its Arak heavy water reactor with the cooperation of China and probably the United States.

In his press conference here in Tehran, Rouhani hailed Iran’s “good” relations with China, saying that the ties between the two states are progressing forward, and “there are many plans ahead where the Chinese side can participate.”

He made the remarks in reply to a question about Tehran’s ties with China, stressing that a plan to redesign an Iranian nuclear site is one of the fields where the two states can cooperate.

“One of the points agreed upon in JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) was that Arak heavy water reactor could be further modernized,” Rouhani said, referring to the text of a comprehensive nuclear accord reached between Tehran and world powers on July 14.

“This will be done by China and one of the (other) Group 5+1 member states (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany),” the Iranian president said, adding that the other country would probably be the United States.

His remarks came as earlier on Thursday, Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi traveled to China to hold talks on China’s technical assistance for redesigning the Arak heavy water reactor that Tehran has undertaken to “redesign and rebuild” under a lasting nuclear deal with world powers.

According to the JCPOA, “Iran will redesign and rebuild a modernized heavy water research reactor in Arak, based on an agreed conceptual design, using fuel enriched up to 3.67 %, in a form of an international partnership which will certify the final design.”

Iran and the Group 5+1 (also known as E3+3 and P5+1) on July 14 reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement that would terminate all sanctions imposed on Tehran over its nuclear energy program after coming into force.

US sanction has been unreasonable, just ignore them, let's continue to do good for people of Iran and China.

As Rouhani said, one other country from P5+1 may join the program. If that's the case, I hope it's Russia not US.

True. China, Russia and Iran must make a block against west evil ambitions. Iran and China must cooperate in every fields more than before especially sciences and military. Moreover I hope to see Iran, China gas pipeline in maximum 10 years future.

US-led west has sanctioned Iran, maintained threat of invasion, it's time for Iran to shut them (excluding Germany) out of business.

And US now sanctions Russia, to an extent even EU allies have to take collateral damage.

Iran, Pakistan, Russia and China should strengthen co-operation to counter US military/economic aggression in all fields, from science, industrial, infra, military, energy to financial!

The EU and the US are welcome to bolster Iran's economy as long as they genuinely want to help Iran and the latter doesn't intend to wreak havoc within the Western Asian country. Having said that Tehran needs to stay wary of America's policy on the Middle East and harmful fifth columns.

I'd also love to promote Iran to a full member of the SCO.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran signed a contract with China to use Beijing's consultative assistance to modernize the heavy water reactor near the Central city of Arak.

"The project to modernize Arak heavy water reactor is being implemented based on schedule and at the same time, a contract was negotiated for China's consultation services for redesigning (the reactor) and it was finalized and signed in Beijing on April 13 with due respect and attention to all considerations of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI)," the Iranian foreign ministry said in its fifth three-month report on the process of the implementation of the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the world powers.

The report was submitted to the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on Saturday afternoon.

In relevant remarks in February 2016, AEOI Head Ali Akbar Salehi said that the Iranian engineers and Chinese counterparts are redesigning the Arak heavy water reactor.

"We are redesigning the Arak plant. Our Chinese partners have the blueprint too. We both shared our views two weeks ago in a meeting in Tehran," Salehi told reporters at the time.

He said there have been no delays in implementing the project since it began a year ago (2015).

According to Salehi, the Arak heavy water reactor, whose core was taken out under the nuclear deal with the world powers, was designed and built by Iranian experts, they are still in charge, but decision was made to do it in partnership with China.

:disagree:What a joke:disagree:
Still I suppose that it shows that the project is still officially alive,at least to some sort of degree, tho as for how many more years this "redesign" will take to complete and then of course actually implement is anyones guess.
