Iran calls for formation of Asian Union
Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said Tuesday that Iran hopes all Asian countries support the idea of the formation of the Asian Union, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The continent should move in direction of further convergence, said Mottaki.
Noting that other continents all had unions for themselves, Mottaki said Asia, as the most populous continent in the world which has the most significant role in world's economy, should form a union as well, according to IRNA.
During the past year in which Iran has been directing the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD), it has developed plans towards the achievement of this objective, he was quoted as saying.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday also called for convergence of the Asian countries at the ninth ministerial meeting of the ACD, in Tehran.
Iran, as the current head of ACD, is hosting a two-day ministerial meeting on Nov. 8 and 9 in Tehran.
The ACD is a body created in 2002 to promote Asian cooperation at a continental level and to help integrate separate regional cooperation organizations such as ASEAN, South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation and the Gulf Cooperation Council.
