An Iranian ship seized two US Navy drone boats on Thursday and tried to hide them from US air assets by putting them under a tarp. The Iranians eventually released them overboard the next day following intervention by the US military, a US official told Insider.

The Iranian destroyer Jamaran captured the two drones and pulled them out of the water in the Red Sea and then examined them on deck, the Associated Press reported, citing state television footage.

A US official told Insider that the Navy received indications from the drones that they had been seized and responded to the incident by sending ships to establish bridge-to-bridge communications with the Iranian vessel.

In a statement released after initial publication, US Naval Forces Central Command said that the responding ships were the guided-missile destroyers USS Nitze and USS Delbert D. Black. A MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter was also sent out in response.

When the Iranians noticed the helicopter in the air, sailors on the Jamaran tried to hide the captured US unmanned assets under a tarp, the official said.

After initially denying that it was in possession of US property, the crew of the Iranian naval vessel put them back in the water by releasing them overboard, the official explained.

You have two scenes including from Iran's own source with a picture of 2 auto sailboats on one of your ships besides the other one that is towing. Besides you don't need to tarp over the cameras when duct tape can do just fine or vandalism as you proudly mentioned. As the article mentions you put tarp when there was an American helo coming. Easily proudly display the trophies when taking it home if you still had two on board and not forced to give it up by the phantom non existent U.S. Navy.

"You have..."? Do I? Show me the proof of this claim. The only image/footage we have is of an Iranian naval ship escorted by an Iranian destroyer and theyre throwing the drones overboard. No footage of any US involvement or any dialogue exists of the second incident. Claim rejected until proven otherwise.

Maybe they didn't have tape at the time, that is a possibility. Tape could also damage the camera whilst applying it and taking it off later. There is no other reason for them to do that. Your article is not proof. So will need footage of tarp being used or an "american helo coming in", otherwise this claim is also rejected.

We have enough military trophies that are of actual use because, by all accounts, these drones are basic and easily replicated without the need to reverse engineer. US military didnt force anything, they probably kept asking from a distance and Iran dropped them after they had finished their investigation as planned. That's what I'm going with until I see evidence that isnt American MSM.

jamaran have a mission in gulf of Aden , it won't end its mission to deliver back two drones that you better knew how of small value are and if Iran wanted could snatch several of them from Persian gulf . not four four hours haul one of them all around Persian gulf

Now if those drones were functional, then certainly they had captured the incident and there was no point in hiding them. and if they were nonfunctional, then again, it confirms Iran's report of their unsafe presence in shipping route.

Iran's Seizure Of US Navy Drones In Red Sea Puts Its Future In Jeopardy; Top Commander Questions USVs Utility

In an unprecedented series of events, the Iranian Navy recently captured two US Navy Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessels (USVs) in the Red Sea and released them a day later. Following this embarrassment, the surface drone program of the US Navy has come under a shadow.

US Representative Elaine Luria, a Navy veteran and vice chair of the House Armed Services Committee, said that now is not the time for the Navy to invest heavily in unmanned surface vessels (USV).

She spoke at Defense One’s State of Defense virtual conference on September 14.

The veteran emphasized that the recent seizure of two United States Navy Saildrone Explorer USVs by the Iranian Navy in the Red Sea did not augur well for the future of such vessels.

Early this month, an Iranian Navy ship pulled two US unmanned surface vehicles out of the water in an alleged attempt to steal them. Soon, the US Navy dispatched two destroyers, the USS Nitze and USS Delbert D Black, and two helicopters to secure their release.

The Iranian Navy released the drones a day later.​

While the unmanned surface vessels were eventually secured, the incident did serve as a reminder to the US Navy that these unmanned vehicles were not invincible.

Luria, a retired Navy commander, said she favored funding R&D to figure out how to apply unmanned technology at sea.

“I definitely think there is a place in the future to have some unmanned surface vessels that provide some capability,” Luria said.

“But I think our fleet is manned and crewed, and it should and will stay that way for the foreseeable future.”

Despite her willingness to fund research into these systems, she said that technology is not ready to handle “the maintenance challenges of operating at sea and transiting long distances.”​
